@Imke
32. lol! Well you did very well to keep to the schedule for so long. No shame there ;)
35. I think you are right
36. true

@Allison
32. So true. I'm not even sure I like them...lol!
35. She seems pretty dense when it comes to Simon. I wonder if 16 year old girls are really like that? Alot of YA seems to take this angle...
36. I agree
----------------
@Robin
ah, it happens Robin, no worries! At least it is a quick book to read :)
10. I want the door too!!
11. lol!
12. There are alot of coincidences in this book....
13. Yes - I could compare him to a HP character, but I won't.. haha
14. I agree. I actually think the writing is pretty sloppy and I haven't decided if she is just plagarising HP or "inspired" by it... But it is not a difficult read

July 22 Chapters 19-21 (pages 321-368)
The line from the poem at the start of part three can be found
here
37. So the greater demon Abbadon overtook Dorothea and was waiting for them! Were you surprised that Alec finally tried to kill a demon and Simon came to the rescue? Did Alec try to kill it because of the conversation with Clary or was he just not thinking and really concerned for Jace? Do you think Alec can survive?
38. Hodge shows his true self which explains why The Clave apparently "agreed" to them getting the cup. Did you expect this betrayal?
39. What would Valentine want with Jace? Why did he not even notice Clary?
40. Luke's story pretty much mirrored Lupin's in HP. Now we know his side of the story what are your thoughts on Luke? Should she trust him?
41. Valentine and Jocelyn did have a son (Jonathan) who we assume is now dead, and Valentine is Clary's dad. I wonder if he knows?
I have a bad feeling that Jace is actually Jonathan, but that seems a bit "Star Wars" so hopefully that is not the case!

Did Alec try to kill it because of the conversation with Clary or was he just not thinking and really concerned for Jace? Do you think Alec can survive?
No I wasn’t surprised by both. I think Alec tried to kill a demon because of the conversation with Clary and also because he was concerned for Jace. I think Alec feels he has to protect Jace.
38. Hodge shows his true self which explains why The Clave apparently "agreed" to them getting the cup. Did you expect this betrayal?
I didn’t expect Hodges betrayal, I felt he was hiding something, but I thought it had more to do with Clary’s history.
39. What would Valentine want with Jace? Why did he not even notice Clary?
I think Hodge hid her by putting her behind that “wall”.
40. Luke's story pretty much mirrored Lupin's in HP. Now we know his side of the story what are your thoughts on Luke? Should she trust him?
I think she should trust Luke. He was just trying to protect her.
I don’t think Valentine knows about Clary. It seems Jocelyn ran away before she could have told anyone about her pregnancy.

25. Jace made a point of making sure Clary knew that he would always want to know the truth. I wonder how this will be significant in the future? Not sure.
26. Clary had to have the spell 'renewed' every 2 years to block her mind which explains how she has suddenly started to see their world (as the spell diminished). Her mother was trying to protect her, but it seems a short sighted solution. What do you think? Her mother seemed pretty determined to never allow Clary to enter the world of the Shadowhunters. I wonder why? Because she despised the Shadowhunters as Magnus Bane hinted or some other reason?
27. Simon getting turned into a rat seemed pretty funny, eventhough it ended pretty disastarously! I've noticed Clary seems to sort of forget he is around. I wonder if his family have noticed he is missing? Yeah that was a great scene, I laughed out loud when reading it.
28. I found the party pretty strange how the vampires were blaming Magnus for their motorbikes, and then how quickly it all ended. Your thoughts? The party Magnus held, was a strange one, that's true. It felt somehow incomplete, something was missing from the scene. I, for my part, would have liked to hear more of the different creatures, that were there, like the fairy band, how they look like, what kind of music they were playing etc. Motorbikes running on demonic magic which can fly, awesome, can I have one too?
29. Magnus reminded Clary that her mother ran from shadowhunters and now she is staying with them. But what are her options? Try and go back to Luke? Clary has not that many options right now, also she cant fight herself, no training yet, so she has to rely on someone, I prefer Jace to Luke at that point of time.
30. I was surprised Clary had never been into a church. That seemed like something a teenager would question their parents about. Or perhaps it isn't that unsual "these days"? Me too.
31. Another action packed end to this section with the hotel, Raphael, vampire nest and now wolves! I promise I did not intend for so many sections of reading to end on cliff-hangers! lol! Predictions... are the wolves there to help them or hurt them? Or some other reason? Cliffhangers are plenty :) The suspense is nearly killing me.
July 21 Chapters 15-18 (pages 260-320)
32. It seems the wolves were after Clary. More enemies? Do they think she has the cup? I suspect Valentine sent them after her...
33. The flying bike followed by the confrontation with Alec. I thought it was pretty unfair he was blaming Clary. You? I still don't like Alec. The fight was not going anywhere. I suppose he feels left out :) Poor guy.
34. A bath of spaghetti! lol! Did you have any strange birthday requests when you were younger? Nope.
35. I'm not a fan of romance per-se, but I did like the romantic birthday picnic which, of course, brought about the declaration of love from Simon. Do you think Clary handled this situation well? I liked the idea and the scene as well. Hell, it's a love triangle, these situations are always awkward.
36. I found the way the mortal cup was hidden VERY clever! Do you think it is right that they intend to swap the cup for Jocelyn? Knowing how evil Valentine is that doesn't seem like something the Clave would agree to? Yeah, that was awesome. No, but that does not matter, she would not sacrifice her mother. She will do something, anything to save her. I would try anything as well even if anyone else thinks I am out of my mind as the Clave would.
@Imke
37. I agree
39. You may be right, but I thought she said it was clear? Although maybe only from her side
-----------
@Christine
26. It is a pretty drastic road to take
28. Yes, that scene could have given a lot more for the reader. The bike was pretty cool!
31. lol!
33. Alec really hasn't come across well so far! Although he does seem loyal to Jace
------------
@Allison
38. You're right, there always has to be a betrayal! lol
39. I wondered about this too - seems like there must be more to it

July 23 Chapters 22-end (pages 369-442)
42. Ah, the big reveal about Jace! I was pretty disappointed with this turn of events as I think Jace and Clary worked well as a couple and that makes that whole picnic which I thought was lovely just a bit icky! Your thoughts?
43. Should Jace have killed Valentine when he had the chance? This man was pretty cruel to him, but he is still his father?...
44. Alec and Isabelle's characters seem to have completely changed now that Clary is "famous" and Jace's sister. They were both actually nice... Do you like the "new" Alec and Isabelle?
45. Final thoughts on the book? What will be your review and rating?

Feel the same way. Though I think there could be a lot more about this story of Valentine being Jaces father. Not sure I’m buying it yet.
43. Should Jace have killed Valentine when he had the chance? This man was pretty cruel to him, but he is still his father?...
I don’t think he’d be able to kill his father. There is love somewhere and there are so many questions left unanswered.
44. Alec and Isabelle's characters seem to have completely changed now that Clary is "famous" and Jace's sister. They were both actually nice... Do you like the "new" Alec and Isabelle?
I don’t know if I like them yet, need to see if the nice sticks. Also they may be nicer to Clary now that they know she is a shadowhunter and not a mundie.
45. Final thoughts on the book? What will be your review and rating?
I really liked the book and will continue the series. Sure it has a Harry Potter feel to it, but I needed someone to point it out for me first, also the story and world was different enough for me and I don’t mind that much really. It was a fast paced story with a lot of action and made me want to continue reading. The story is not too complicated and is a nice in between book when I don’t want to think too much. I gave the book 4 stars.

I'm glad you enjoyed it Imke! :)
I agree that it is not complicated, and a good pace. It's not that I thought the book was *terrible*, but she is a pretty sloppy writer and I just couldn't get past the HP similarities. Especially when Luke told his story, it was basically the story of Voldemort and his gang from HP complete with Luke as a werewolf (aka Lupin). I have done a bit of googling and it seems the plagarism claims are pretty controversial.
I just feel "wrong" giving her money by reading more of the series when I feel like she ripped off so much of the premise and characters from HP! I may see the movie.. I don't know... I'm very conflicted with this!

Did Alec try to kill it because of the conversation with Clary or was he just not thinking and really concerned for Jace? Do you think Alec can survive? I was surprised a) that Alec raced forward to kill the demon and b) that Simon burst in and managed to put it back from where it came. Never thought that was in him :) Clary definitely hit home with her comment but I also think Alec really wants to protect Jace. Alec can't just die now.
38. Hodge shows his true self which explains why The Clave apparently "agreed" to them getting the cup. Did you expect this betrayal? I did not see that coming, but I am also not really surprised. He was already siding with "the dark lord" once.
39. What would Valentine want with Jace? Why did he not even notice Clary? No clue. Clary was hidden behind some magical veil or something similar.
40. Luke's story pretty much mirrored Lupin's in HP. Now we know his side of the story what are your thoughts on Luke? Should she trust him? That was pretty lame, copy and paste from HP. I was disappointed.

I was pretty disappointed with this turn of events as I think Jace and Clary worked well as a couple and that makes that whole picnic which I thought was lovely just a bit icky! Your thoughts? Jace and Clary would have made a good couple. It was a bit awkward that Jace is J.C in the end.
43. Should Jace have killed Valentine when he had the chance? This man was pretty cruel to him, but he is still his father?... I was for not killing him.
44. Alec and Isabelle's characters seem to have completely changed now that Clary is "famous" and Jace's sister. They were both actually nice... Do you like the "new" Alec and Isabelle? I think Alec and Isabelle were believable. Clary didn't get their beloved Jace killed, right? *lol* The "famous" part was not believable for me. They are in a real mess now after the reveal.
45. Final thoughts on the book? What will be your review and rating? 3 stars. The book had definitely its weaknesses and the HP similarities did put me off as Karen mentioned as well. Still I need to read City of Ashes. Maybe the story improves? I won't watch the movie though.

42. Kind of sad isn't it that she needs to "settle" for mr convenient
43. True, he would've been too much like him if he did
44. lol. I didn't like this complete change in them
45. I agree with you. And I think the Alec and Isabelle thing is just lazy writing. Same as how Alec is magically healed by Magnus.

39. I guess we have to assume that was the case
40. same

Thanks everyone for joining me to read this book. I really enjoyed your comments/opinions/insights!

Don't know if anyone still lingers here. Unfortunately real life caught up with me as well (which sometimes can't be helped) but I finally finished the book now and I desperately want to read the next in the series AND watch the movie.
I really liked the book. It was a very good fantasy adventure, not ground-breaking but it doesn't need to be. The story is engaging and interesting and I want to know what happens next. So thumbs up from me!
It was fun reading the book together (at least the few chapters I could) and read everyones opinion on it. The pace was also good and manageable.
Till next time!
No problems Franky, it happens! I'm glad you enjoyed the book. I think it is a book you either love or just think it's ok
The movie would be interesting, I may end up seeing it :)

Oh that sucks Robin - I hope you get better soon! You're just trying to avoid the love triangle ;)

Book Synopsis:
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder― much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?
This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...
Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

1. Lots of action in the first few chapters and new words! Mudies, shadowhunters, infernal worlds, "Hodge" and "The Institute", the night children.... Thoughts on the book so far?
Got off to a slow start for me but now going a lot faster. I am definitely a little lost on all the creatures/words/etc but I'm sure it'll all come together soon!
2.Do you think Clary's mum is (was?) a shadowhunter based on the clues given so far (no family history, no background prior to Clary, scars on her arms the same as Jace, her drawings, Luke's reactions)? Any guesses on why/how she can be seen by "mundies" if that is the case? Who has found her?
I'm not sure yet if she's a shadowhunter or some other creature. She's definitely not Mundie but not sure what.
3. Clary is described as slender, 5ft tall, "carotty" hair, freckles and clumsy. She also seems a bit clueless about the world around her! Do you like Clary so far? And her relationship with Simon? I smell a YA love triangle on the horizon! ;)
I do like Clary. ..she seems a little feisty, but loyal to her friends. I love her relationship with Simon...we all could use a male BFF like him! Definitely see a fight coming on between Simon and Jace!
Chapters 4-6 (pages 50-95)
4.Did you agree with Clary's decision to go back to her house after her mother called her begging her not to go?
I understand, but no way in hell would I go back, at least not by myself!
5.The Ravenor Demon said to itself "Valentine will never know". This is the second time we have heard of Valentine now. I do feel like there are alot of Harry Potter similarities (mundies v muggles ; valentine v voldermort ; The Institute v Hogwarts). Have you noticed that? Does it impact your feelings towards the book?
I hadn't noticed, but now that you point it out.....interesting.
6. I was surprised with Luke's reaction when Clary called him. Do you think he is just trying to protect her (or himself?) by not helping her? Or is he just a jerk?
Makes me wonder who's side he's on....has his job been to watch over Clary's mom all this time and now his job is do e? He may be trying to keep Clary safe by staying clear of her...perhaps he somehow led them to Clary's mom and now feels guilty or perhaps he's being searched for.
7. Valentine "died" 15 years ago along with his wife and child.... hmmm... sounds like he could be Clary's father and is actually still alive... Thoughts?
Definitely some connection there....too coincidental that Valentine died 16 years ago and Clary is almost 16...perhaps she's half Shadow/half mundie.
8. The descriptions of the Institute were interesting - I always love it when authors describe libraries! What did you think of the Institute and it's inhabitants?
I totally pictured the mansion/school from X-MEN movies and pictured Hodge as Professor X!
9. Another horrible creature tries to kill Clary and it seems there is more than meets the eye with Dorothea! We hit another cliff hanger for a stopping point! Guesses on Dorothea's story? It seems to be too much of a coincidence that she was living in the same building as Clary and her mum.
Not sure of her storyyet...she definitely plays a roll, and knows something, but just not sure what yet.

Chapters 7-9 (pages 96-139)

(view spoiler)

10.Dorothea's place was interesting. Jace's future seems to be in the direction of violence, enemies and a love triangle. ;) Clary's was "blocked". Maybe her mum did this to protect her from that world? Thoughts?
I think she definitely had something being blocked....either by a spell or something. Something happened in her past that her mum blocked from her mind somehow.
11. Not a question, just some information, but feel free to comment! Clary picks The Ace of Cups tarot card. In tarot, cups is the suit of emotions and ace is new beginnings. So this card has meanings of the beginning of love, happiness and compassion. It can indicate the start of a new relationship, be it a friendship or a romance. The card itself has a picture of a dove and water flowing so it is considered a peaceful, positive card.
Interesting....I've never known much about the various cards in tarot card reading.
12. The house they live in is a sanctuary that hides "criminals" and protected by Dorothea. Did this surprise you? What/who do you think Jocelyn was hiding from?
Makes sense that if Jocelyn was hiding that she'd hide out somewhere safe...so if Dorothea can put a spell on the house, she'd want to keep her and Clary safe and away from danger.
13. I liked the idea of a portal. I hope we get to see this used to go to other cool places! Ideas about Luke? He aligned with Jocelyn while it suited - is he really keeping distant from the situation? What about the manacles they found with blood on them?
I was on the fence about Luke after the phone call from Clary...however, I know it had to be for her own good how he acted towards her. I like the Portals (just recently read Daughter of Smoke & Bone) so the idea of Portals plays heavily there. I am unsure yet about the manacles....was it a way he used to torture others? Or was it something used on him (I picture someone having themself strapped down to avoid/contain being changed into werewolf, etc!!!) Not sure yet on what they were used for.
14. I'm enjoying the fast pace of the book, and now the introduction of the mortal cup being stolen and possibly hidden by Jocelyn, showing us the men that killed Jace's father, The Circle etc. How do you feel about the book? Are you still engaged? Enjoying the writing style?
I'm enjoying the fast paced chapters and the writing...however, at times I feel like I'm getting a bit lost because there are SO MANY other worldly things!!!
Chapter 10&11
15. What do you think are the significance of Clary's dreams? Is this somehow tied up with her mind being "blocked"?
I think perhaps by her being at the Institute, things are starting to somehow leak out and come to the surface.
16. Hodge said something about Valentine having a son, and then corrected himself and said he was just using a turn of phrase. I wonder?....
Interesting....Jace perhaps???
17. You are "born" or "made" into a shadowhunter and have no choice in the matter. At Bone City we see that when Shadowhunters die in battle they are burnt and then their bodies make up the marble arches. It doesn't seem to be a life of any freedoms or choices. Would you rather be a shadowhunter or a mundie?
It seems there is much more honor in being a shadowhunter...you serve a purpose and have a goal, whereas being a mundie you're just there. However, I love having free will and choices so that would be tough.
18. The Bone City... literally! I loved the carriage ride and the descriptions of this place. What are your thoughts on the silent brothers?
Sounds beautiful! The Silent Brothers do in fact creep me out a bit by their description!!! I don't blame Jace and the cat for being afraid of them!
19. I'm a bit surprised that Hodge would be put at the institute to train others although he is a "criminal" (and same for Alec and Isabelle's parents). Do you think this punishment fits the crime?
I think it's all relative...if there are things that by being at the Institute it limits them from doing things they love, perhaps that is torture to them. It seems they have still have some free reign, just maybe not as much as they'd like.
20. Part II begins with a line from The Aeneid by Virgil. Any scholars amongst us? I googled and found that it is the story of Aeneas' wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins. Ideas on the significance of this? (wiki link is here
Not sure yet....
21. There seems to be an increasing flirtation from Jace to Clary. And now Simon and Isabella seem to be spending more time together. Anyone want to take a bet on the love triangle (square?) that will ensue?! ;)
Definitely I see that happening....Simon like Clary, but now likes Isabella...and Jace and Clary are flirting...but then where does Alec fit in....something is going to happen.
22. Magnus Bane may hold the key to Clary's blocking. And he just happens to hand out flyers for his party the night that she is able to see them... Coincidence? Do you think this is a trap? - possible trap...not sure
23. I found Jace's bedtime story pretty creepy! So you think it is a fable or did it happen (to him?)?
Too much to it to not be real.....
24. I'm not sure of the significance of Alec being gay other than he seems to fancy Jace. Theories?
May not play a roll yet, but it will.

It is very fast paced and lots going on. A nice change from the romantic chick lit I've been reading lately.
The portal travel is cool, though I guess you can't do that all the time, and the subway is quicker than walking or taxi's in the traffic.

The book is fast-paced and a good read. I'm going to have to finish today to see how it ends.

Awesome! I need to block out about 3 hours to have ME time so I can finish this off!

Yes very interesting. I like the dimensional door and want one of those :) I am not sure why Clary's future was "blocked". I hope it is for her own protection.

I think her new beginning will include the life as a shadowhunter and of course new relationships with Hodge and the inhabitants of the Institute. And it is a given that she will be falling in love...this is YA and know we can't get through a book without some sort of love interest which will probably also be some sort of triangle**sighs and rolls eyes** LOL

No not really because in the beginning chapters we did get a little bit of info in regards to Dorothea...it was sketchy but still enough to kind of clue us in. Well with what little we know about Valentine I am thinking it probably has something to do with him. Simply because he was dead, the blue haired boy said he is alive and he knew where he was, and then all of a sudden Jocelyn is in a panicked rush to get them moved from the apartment. Awful coincidental...
13. I liked the idea of a portal. I hope we get to see this used to go to other cool places! Ideas about Luke? He aligned with Jocelyn while it suited - is he really keeping distant from the situation? What about the manacles they found with blood on them?
I like the portal too. I hope we get to see it used more often too :) I am still a little suspicious of Luke. Is he going to be our mystery character that we can't figure out if he is good or bad until the end LOL No comment yet about the manacles.
14. I'm enjoying the fast pace of the book, and now the introduction of the mortal cup being stolen and possibly hidden by Jocelyn, showing us the men that killed Jace's father, The Circle etc. How do you feel about the book? Are you still engaged? Enjoying the writing style?
I am still engaged although I'm not getting to read as much as I want....Real Life is getting in my way LOL The writing style isn't the best but it is serving it's purpose by keeping me interested. I can't say that I LOVE the book but I do like it :)
