Amanda (amandasays) | 1 comments Hi everyone! My name's Amanda, and I'm born and raised in Sweden. I love to read, and I read a little bit of everything, both fiction and non-fiction, but I always read from a feministic perspective.

I'm looking forward to participate in reads and discussions. :)

Taylor (seffietay) Welcome Amanda!

message 254: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) So glad to have you join us Chrissy! Welcome!

message 255: by amruta (new)

amruta (ellyfint) Hi everyone! I've been on goodreads for some months but decided, this year, that I would participate in groups and make better use of this great website. So glad to find this group!

I'm a feminist, a sociologist, an avid reader, currently living in central PA. Looking forward to discussions and reading suggestions!

message 256: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Welcome Amruta - I hope you enjoy the experience - we love having you here! (I spent some wonderful years in PA!)

message 257: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Hi Brandon and welcome to the group! I do hope you enjoy our discussions! Is it ever the right time to be certain of things? Me, I much more enjoy conversations with folks who are open to possibilities.

message 258: by Allison (new)

Allison Perez | 1 comments Hi all! I'm an intersectional feminist that has a lifelong love of reading. Really that's all thats interesting about me, haha. Anyway, thanks for having a feminist group on here!

message 259: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Welcome Allison! Looking forward to talking with you!

message 260: by Ann (new)

Ann Werner (writingfool) | 7 comments Hi, my name is Ann Werner and I'm an author, a feminist and avid reader. I write fiction and the only kind of feminine character I know how to write is a strong woman! My daughter is also an author, but she's into non-fiction and is very active in the Women's Rights movement. I'm looking forward to the suggestions put forward in this group and hearing about the experiences other women have had.

message 261: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Hi Ann, welcome!

message 262: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Glenn | 12 comments Hi, I'm Rebecca Glenn. I'm an art historian and an aspiring writer of historical fiction about women. I LOVE stories about strong women and especially women who have overcome great obstacles only to triumph. I'm looking forward to reading great books with all of you!

message 263: by Chloe (new)

Chloe Weir (chloeweird) Hello, I'm Chloe. I'm a student and recently returned to reading actual books again. I grew up reading romance novels, but have recently moved on to poetry.

I hope to find enlightened conversation here that I just haven't been able to find on my Facebook feed.

message 264: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Welcome Rebecca and Chloe - it's so good to have you both here! I do hope you enjoy the books and conversations here - do jump in!

Thanks! I will. :)

message 266: by Stef (new)

Stef Rozitis | 71 comments Hi, I'm Stef. I prefer books (fiction or non-fiction) with some feminist content. My reviews often look at the gender, race, class, etc, etc intersections in tho books I read (even the kids books). Apparently that makes me a nerd.

One thing I find...a lot of otherwise very empowering books still subscribe to a kind of compulsory heterosexuality. I am not against women sleeping with men, except when that is portrayed as some sort of a natural and inevitable norm. Hope I haven't offended anyone just in my introduction.

message 267: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Hi Stef and welcome! I would hope this is a safe place where we all feel free to state our opinions. I would hope no one would be offended by your honest discussion of what you like and dislike in books! Thank you for your input! But I have to believe you're right, it does seem like the vast majority of books do indeed treat heterosexuality as the norm. I look forward to hearing more from you!

message 268: by Michael (new)

Michael | 24 comments Welcome, Stef! Actually, I've noticed that addressing any intersectional oppression is a stumbling block for a lot of authors: books that counter sexist biases often have (straight) white characters, books that counter racist biases often focus on men, etc. And of course, almost no books with the main character in a wheelchair.

message 269: by Manoj (new)

Manoj Kerai | 1 comments Hi I'm Manoj :)

I would describe myself as a male feminist as I believe men and women should be equal. I spent a lot of time fighting for human rights and equality for all groups of people.

I have recently published my debut novel focusing on women's rights in India. Some profits made from the novel will help fund projects to end violence against women in India and UK.

My purpose for joining this group is that I am keen to discover new feminist literature, and also to get opinions on my work from other feminists. I don't want to just join this to promote my work as I want to learn more, so if anyone is interested let me know.

Dunno what else to say to introduce myself so HI!

message 270: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Ramirez | 1 comments Hello! My name is Betzabé. I also identify as a feminist and I'm really glad I found this group. I look forward to interesting discussions and great new books to read!
A little about myself, I'm 21 I'm a news junkie and I love to read non-fiction mostly, but I've been looking for new fiction books to read lately.
I'm currently a student and work in retail. I'm engaged to my boyfriend of two years who has been incredibly supportive of feminist activism.

message 271: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (moralinfidelity) Manog Kerai, nice to make your acquaintance here. Your book looks fascinating.

message 272: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Welcome all! Do feel free to jump into any and all of our discussions - we look forward to hearing more from you!

message 273: by Sophia (new)

Sophia Scarlet Hi Everyone,

I love novels with strong female characters and I am particularly frustrated by the problematic characterizations of women in romance novels. How come even in our fantasies we need to maintain off putting norms of how women "should" behave.

Anyway that's why I joined this group. I'm looking for likeminded readers and novel suggestions. BTW I'm a happily married mother of two living in Maryland. I eat a plant based diet, drive a Prius, and would idealy attend Bikram yoga every day but like I said I have two little ones and live in the woods.

I self published a novel recently and it's been a very enlightening experience. I'm looking forward to making new F-word friends!

Ann Werner (writingfool) | 7 comments Hi Everyone,

I've introduced myself before but thought you might enjoy reading a post I did for my daughter's blog, ROAR. It's about the F-Word, so it is so very apropos! Here's the link: http://kaj-roar.com/2015/03/said-your...

I'd also like anyone interested to check out my daughter's book. She's an activist in the women's rights movement. It's on Amazon and NOOK as well as in paperback.

message 277: by Sorrel (last edited May 08, 2015 11:23PM) (new)

Sorrel | 6 comments Hi, um I'm Sorrel and I think I just followed a friend here and it really appealed to me, especially since seeing a book of Caitlin Moran's who is a real heroine of mine. Growing up in a house with just my mum and my sister and going to an all girls school, which is sort of like a utopia fantasy land where gender inequality just doesn't exist, has made me hyper-aware to sexism and it's something that's really bothered me. So, um, that's it. :-)

message 278: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Welcome Ann and Sorrel - so glad to have you both here! Do jump into our discussions!

Hi Jessica - or would you rather be addressed at Betzabé? If you're interested in a non-fiction feminist book, check out this one.

message 280: by Krissy (new)

Krissy (booksydame) | 2 comments Hey everyone! I'm Krissy! I joined this group at the beginning of the year but haven't really had a chance to figure out where I should talk in the forums, haha. Now that school is out for the semester I'd like to take more time to be active and tackle this. I'm 26 and looking to open my horizons in regards to feminist literature. I hate that the people I've been encountering lately treat feminism as a dirty word. I want to be more active with this and where better to start than with books, especially for a bookworm! :) I've just graduated with my practical nursing degree, am studying for boards this summer, and have already signed up for classes in the fall to help me move in the direction of my RN. Most importantly, I love books, of all sorts. I'm excited to get to know all of you! :)

message 281: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Welcome Krissy! So glad to have you join us (and so glad to hear you now have some time to read and chat)! Do feel free to drop into any of the conversations, there are some great ongoing ones in the Talking Points folder https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
as well as lots of great book discussions, either for books you've already read or books you're currently reading - and we'll be reading more great books next month!

Hi Krissy! Congratulations on your graduation and best of luck on your next adventure in nursing. :) I look forward to your thoughts on upcoming reads. I hope to join in more next month myself.

message 284: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Hi Bradette! Great to have you come join our conversations here! Welcome!

message 285: by Astrid (new)

Astrid (astridetal) | 1 comments Hi, I am new here. I love reading mostly non-fiction about social justice issues. I am a woman and disabled myself and my particular interest is with disability studies (als some LGBTQIA studies) but I also consider myself an intersectional feminist. I don't write fiction anymore but I do write a blog (though it isn't particularly focused on feminist topics). Can I still join in with the June read of the month?

message 286: by Laura (new)

Laura Hey Astrid, I think so long as you read the book during June you're part of the read-along. Welcome!! :-)

message 287: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) Hi Astrid, and welcome! Absolutely you can join in! Please do!!!

Welcome, Nancy! I think you'll find some good books here. :)

message 290: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) Hi everyone, I'm Anita. I'm really trying to read more women (authors and characters) and I love that you have a fiction and non-fiction every month. I hope to find some great reads here!
I'd love to have more friends with similar interests in books so I can peruse your shelves, reviews and ratings, please feel free to add me :)
I notice the person that started the group is a deleted member? That's not an issue, right? Just wondering!

Hi Olivia,

I don't get here nearly as much as I'd like to but today when I saw your post, I just had to ask if you've read the Colleen McCullough Rome series. If not, it will be right up your alley. The books are some of the best historical fiction I've read. She really did her research and made characters from history come vibrantly alive.

message 294: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Banwell | 2 comments Hi Everyone! My name is Ingrid Banwell. I’m an artist and historical fiction /science fiction writer and I live in Sydney, Australia. I’ve just joined this group and have been reading some of your discussions. A whole new world has opened up!
My recently departed mum was a feminist before the word even existed. I was and continue to be inspired by her independent spirit and determination. So I love writing and reading books with strong, inspiring female protagonists. Art, after all, influences life, and the more we and our daughters and sisters read (and write!) these kinds of stories, the more we will be inspired, just like our heroines, to take a stand for what is right and just.

Thank you so much for setting up this group :).

message 295: by Sophie (new)

Sophie Boulter Hello everyone, my name is Sophie. I've been a feminist since I learned of the word, and am currently trying to start an organization at my high school to promote feminist values. I love reading and philosophy, and have studied a great amount of contemporary feminist philosophy.

Thank you for reading and I am very happy to be part of this group!

Please feel free to add me as a friend if any of you are interested! I'm new (I created this account a while ago but now I'm finally using it!)
