Alice Furse Hey, I'm Alice - this looks like a great group to dive into! I have written a novel called Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and although I wouldn't say it was a feminist novel as such (what does that really mean, anyway?) it passes the Bechdel test several times over and has an authentic female voice as a narrator.

Anyway - I look forward to discussing books with some like-minded people!

message 202: by Miriam (new)

Miriam Hi I'm Miriam. I am an English Literature major working on my undergraduate degree. Before college I was home-schooled and because of that I got to read novels a lot. I love to write letters, read large and small books alike, knit, and paint. I also have a partner that is a professional photographer and love to go on excursions to take photographs with him. My partner and I are both feminists and I look forward to reading the selection in this group.

Hi, I'm Sophie. I love reading but I have dyslexia so it takes me a little longer than others. I'm an adult from England and I read pretty much anything, also I am SO bad at introductions! :)

Ashwise | 11 comments My name is Ashley. I'm a social worker and passionate about women's issues and follow the blog Feministing (which features a ton of great articles). I love to read, and I like strong female characters.

мα∂∂ιє ~ иєя∂ ρяιи¢єѕѕ ~ (books_can_take_me_anywhere) Hey guys,

I've noticed that I'm not active in a lot of my groups on GR. So, I'm deleting some. Okay, a lot.

I'm really sorry, but this is for the better. I keep leaving people hanging or just never really commenting.

If this is a role-play group, please just delete my characters. They mean a lot to me and they are all original, and I don't want anyone taking my characters.

I'm not deleting ALL my groups. I'm sure I'll talk with you all again, we're sure to meet up in one of the numerous groups out there.

Byeeeee…..
Maddie
I'll miss you all!

message 208: by Sara (new)

Sara (sarasofiara) | 3 comments Hey I'm Sara! I've always felt strongly about equality since i'm both pakistani and a girl, which has made me subject to a lot of stupid comments who are either racist or sexist, or both.
I became active in the local youngsters club for the feminist party in sweden and one day we were giving each other book recs which were discussing feminism. Now I happened to think that there are probably several other books on these issues and so i came across this book group and now i'm here, eager to discuss books on equality :)

message 210: by Amy (new)

Amy Burk (amykaufmanburk) Hi I'm Amy! I'm an author, blogger, and mother. My husband and I have raised our 2 sons and 1 daughter to be strong feminists. My book's protagonist is a strong, bright adolescent girl who grows to own her full strength. Sexual harassment and sexual assault are subplots in the novel, and I just posted on my blog about the commercial that portrays a woman as a sexual puppet. Would love for anyone in this group to check out my blog/novel. Looking forward to reading the works and comments of other members.

message 212: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello everyone, my name is Kristen. I am a novelist, nature lover, wife, baker, animal lover, hot chocolate addict, and Feminist. My latest novel, The Creaking Tree, is a fairy tale for adults. And no, my heroine is perfectly capable of saving herself and the kingdom by herself. I have four other novels, Shakespeare's Sister and The Vampiric Housewife trilogy. While I tend to travel over genre lines, I do always write about one thing--women.

I've been reading through the threads on here, and I have to say that I am inspired and happy to be here.

Paula (lunaontherun) | 31 comments Hi! My name is Paula and I am a book worm, casual gamer, tea and crafts enthusiast, aspiring writer/poet, and a feminist. message 215: by Kim (new)

Kim (whatkimreads) Hi, I'm Kim! I'm a 20 year old student from Belgium and I only just recently became interested in feminism. I guess you could say I'm a newbie! :)
I am still looking around me, trying to figure out what feminism is >exactly< and especially, what I want it to be.

Because I'm a linguistics and literature student (in 2 languages, English and Dutch), I am of course interested in learning about feminism through non-fiction, but also fiction. So that's why I went looking for a group so I could have a place to share my thoughts and discuss and simple learn things about feminism.

So I'm excited to meet you all! :)

(PS: I do have finals this month, so I won't be very active. But no worries, when I'm not studying, I am alway on Goodreads and I try to get involved in as many discussions as my brain can handle! ;) )

Ximena Magaña (magmagana) | 1 comments Hello, beautiful humans! I'm Ximena, law student from Mexico. I believe in gender equality and that feminism is a movement for everybody. I hope that by examining feminist books and authors, we'll be able to raise awareness among us and our loved ones for the sake of improving women's lives.

I look forward to everything about this group. It's the first one I've ever joined so, please, be patient with me or I'll most likely end up crying.

I am looking forward to this group's discussions, comments and readings :)

Lucienne Boyce | 1 comments Hallo I'm Lucienne, a writer of fiction and non-fiction based in Bristol, UK. I've written about the women's suffrage campaign and it's an area I'm still deeply engaged in - currently I'm researching the anti suffrage movement! I also write fiction set in the 18th century which reflects my interest in women's status (especially in the literary world) as well as other radical issues (anti enclosures etc). I did an MA in English Lit specialising in the 18th century and looked at the work of Frances Burney and Charlotte Smith, 2 of my literary heroines - along with Mary Wollstonecraft and suffrage playwright and novelist Cicely Hamilton.

message 225: by Minttu (new)

Minttu (menthae) | 1 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Minttu from Finland. Someone mentioned starting a feminist book club online and that got me thinking that there just has to be a group like that on GoodReads :) So here I am!

I am a single mother of two, have been now for a year. I live with my kids & my three cats at my parents' attic. Recent development and not exactly what I thought I'd be doing at 32. I'm a dressmaker and make-up artist by profession. I'm contemplating moving to Switzerland to be with my boyfriend, but we are not quite there yet.

I've identified as being a feminist for a long time. Perhaps that's because my parents were politically active youth of the 60s and I've grown surrounded by the left wing values of solidarity and equality. My mother is a fierce feminist and I didn't even realize I was one until in high school.

I remember giving a great speech (at least in my opinion) about women being paid less than men in class and my teacher sighed and said "So you are one of those angry feminists then." And I remember thinking why his tone of voice was so negative. "Yes! I am a feminist!" I said proudly and that's how it's been since.

Leif Petersen (leifpetersen) | 2 comments Leif here. permanently single henceforth so have joined mostly as an academic exercise; much like reading about historical events - interesting, but of limited relevance to my ongoing life. so i'll be mostly silent.

Good for you! Your teacher's comment makes me angry! I guess you had a good argument if all he could think of was labelling you to try to silence your ideas. Challenge my ideas not whatever box you think I fit into!

message 228: by Kat (new)

Kat Trina | 9 comments Hi! Name's 'Trina. Floridian living in Osaka, JP. Tattoo apprentice, bibliophile, and feminist killjoy >:)
I've only been active in book clubs for a few months, but I like them as a way to turn reading into something social and to get introduced to different material. Though I've read a bit of feminist literature and nonfiction, I'm not nearly as well-read as I'd like to be. This looks like a nice place to start!

Anyway, nice to meet y'all.

message 229: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (seffietay) Hi 'Trina! Welcome aboard. Using these groups had totally changed the way I read books and I find it has made me more thoughtful and critical. I hope you can be part of the discussions too! The social aspect of reading is really neat :)

Asma'u Shaheedah (shaheedah) | 1 comments Hello Everyone.

I am Asma'u. I love books of all genre and more than anything. I am a staunch feminist mostly because i grew up in a strict community where your gender equals your value and as a kid, i had always been angered by that.

I look forward to discussions and feminist book suggestions as well

Theresa (bigstupid) Hi!

I joined this group because I think I need to expand my "female author" horizons. I'mjust not well-read enough! :/ I'm fairly shy and tend to stay in the background, but I wanted to at least introduce myself, say hello, and the. check out some new books.

message 236: by E.B. (new)

E.B. Barrett | 1 comments Hi, I'm Esmeralda (Ez for short), necessarily relying on my pseudonym on Goodreads due to my author genre, of which my real-life workplaces would not approve—my apologies for that. When I browsed for groups, I was thrilled to see several devoted to feminism, and the F-Word, well, it just had to be joined if you would have me. I have been a feminist since I learned what it was to be one. I grew up in an out-of-the way, impoverished rural area dominated by men whose little power in the world was controlling "their women." Thankfully, my parents were outsiders and education fanatics, and as a result, I had the amazing opportunity to go to a women's liberal arts college on scholarship. I will be eternally grateful for that. Later, I believed that the lot of women was improving, particularly here in the US. I became quieter and more complacent about feminist issues even as I fought for many social justice causes. Now, I feel a great deal of danger in that complacency. Hearing young women talk derisively about feminism has shocked me back into action. So, thank you for having me, and I look forward to reading and learning with you.

Sandy Blue (sandy_blue) I am Sandy. I believe in sexual and gender equality.
As a humanist demisexual person, I hate conventions of any kind and strive consantly to see the world through the eyes of different peopoe with different experiences.
I have written works with strong female characters. My Unchaste Series subtly reflects my feminist views.

message 238: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve | 1 comments Hi everyone! My name is Genevieve (but please call me Gen!). I'm an avid reader (I love, love, looooove books) and a big feminist. I'm Canadian- born in Toronto but grew up between Hong Kong and Toronto, and went to university in the UK. I have a food/recipe blog at www.gratitudeandgreens.com. I love both fiction and non-fiction. I also enjoy reading cultural criticism. I've read a few of the books on the shelf here and am super excited to read all the other ones! I might be bad at posting in the group but will try my best :)

message 239: by Karen (new)

Karen Forrester (karen_forrester) Hi I'm Karen. I've been a Goodreads member for a few months and am happy to find this group. The name alone made me want to join! :-) I think of myself as a feminist first and a lesbian second. This means I sometimes feel "queer" in certain groups of lesbians, because (gasp!) not every lesbian is a feminist. (Of course, it can also be because I'm a recycling, tree-hugging, wiccan-buddist-atheist.) I'm an avid reader, primarily of speculative fiction (science fiction, paranormal, fantasy, etc.). In these categories I mostly read stories with strong female protagonists because, hey, I'm a feminist.

I hope to have time to participate in discussions. But to be honest my highest priorities are to spend time with my partner and friends, go to my day job, and work on my fiction. (I'm an author.) I freely admit that my primary interest in joining this group is to find people who I think will enjoy my stories. So you can expect to see postings from me in the Blatant Self Promotion folder.

Desiree' (sequoia01) Hello, my name is Desiree'. I am glad to partake in the group's discussion. I am a Teacher Credential Student currently in SPED, however, I am in the process of changing my credential, but unsure what subject at this time. Look forward to talking to everyone.

message 241: by Lorena (new)

Lorena Angell (lorenaangell) | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm an author, mother of three, happily married—just celebrated our twenty-fifth anniversary, and proud to say I'm a feminist—even though I was not raised as such. I'll post my detailed transformational journey on a different thread I saw on the boards.

As a reader, I love to read about strong heroines who solve their own problems, who don't rely on a knight in shining armor, and strong heroines who aren't afraid to show their smarts. As a YA author, I write these types of characters. I figure if only one girl can come away with the desire to be a stronger individual, then I've succeeded with my writing.

I'm happy to receive friend requests from like-minded people.

~Lorena Angell

message 244: by Jillian (new)

Jillian Cornell (JillianCornell) | 1 comments Hi everyone. My name is Jillian, and I've been a feminist for as long as I can remember. I'm an avid reader and also an author; all of my books have feminist themes. In my first novel, the gender of my protagonist is never revealed, and I recently published a book that takes place in a world where women are in charge, told from the perspective of a nine-year-old boy. I had wanted to write this story for several years, but I was finally inspired to sit down and write when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. Two incidents in particular pushed me to begin working on The Genesis Reversal. The first one seemed minor, but as I pondered the insinuation of the off-hand comment, I realized that sexism is still prevalent in our culture. When a co-worker asked me the gender of my unborn baby, I told him that I was expecting a girl. His smile faltered, and he said, “Oh … are you okay with that?” My response was, “Of course I’m okay with that!” I was thrilled when I found out the gender of my baby, but the fact that he would think to ask if I was okay with a daughter implies that there’s something wrong with having a girl. Like I’d won a silver medal.

When I told another acquaintance that I was having a daughter, she said, “It’s nice that your first child is a girl.” I smiled, thinking that someone was actually happy for me that my baby was female. Then she elaborated, “It’ll be useful when you have more children because she can help out around the house, and you’ll have an extra set of hands to do the laundry and dishes.” I was flabbergasted. If I was having a boy, would it cross anyone’s mind to suggest that he was a blessing because he could help out with chores? Both of these incidents pushed me to write The Genesis Reversal because I want my little girl to know that she can do anything she wants with her life.

Touche' Jillian. I am glad your inspiration to write a book was propagated by the disillusion of others in a society of people who fail to listen to themselves and what words escape their mouths in thoughtless propaganda. It seems to me they have been pre-programmed like the "Stepford Wives" or "Stepford Husbands." They also made a movie called "Stepford Children." The book "Stepford Wives" is scarier than the movie. We should be able to become the people we envision for ourselves; however, sometimes that doesn't always occur.

I am the Moderator for Social Comm-Linguist. Please check out my group; I am a Teacher Credential student and I created the group to extrapolate all genres. You may also find some value in my discussions. One of my members is a Goodreads Author I am currently reviewing all of her children's literature. I wrote a review of Daksha, Medicine Girl. Please feel free to read the review from my Goodreads booklist. Tell me what you think. I am also reviewing another Goodreads Author.

message 246: by Cara (new)

Cara (caraplusbooks) | 8 comments Hi everyone, I'm Cara, I'm an Australian feminist, have been a feminist for most of my life. I read a lot of fiction, feminist and otherwise, feminist theory books, and just about anything that appeals, I'm always up for learning something new. I like that this group is varied in that way... I tend to automatically interpret things from a feminist/social justice perspective so it will be nice to hang out with others who are also that way inclined!

Robert A. Hello, I am the author of a cultural history about feminism and a not-quite-so-feminist topic, James Bond. While I am interested in sharing my book with members of this group, I am also interested in hearing more from women about their perceptions of cultural representations of women in the media, especially within the James Bond films. Please feel free to check out my work and message me!
