12bs | 1 comments the book starts off with the people in a town/village being ill due to the plague or some disease and the heroine (who hasn't caught it) helping them out
she's known as ugly/awful/dreadful (something like that) and is described as dirty and smells bad
after the people in town are cured they are grateful for her help and want to grant her one thing she would want and she replies that she wants a baby
so after all the shock and contemplating, the person who is to help her get a baby is already engaged to a girl but he is 'honourable' and marries her instead

they both go back to where he's from and he owns a farm (i think it was bought for his fiancee)
when he breaks the news to his fiancee's father - who has influence in the town bc he's a banker - the father is upset and makes his life harder

i've been googling for days and nothing has come up, please help!

Sue Elleker | 1054 comments Silver Lining by Maggie Osborne. I googled western+romance+smallpox.
"The book opens with Low Down nursing half the men in the mining town of Piney Creek, Colorado through a horrible small pox epidemic. Although she's exhausted from her efforts, she doggedly comforts, soothes, and bullies the men into getting better. When it's all over, the men who are still alive are so grateful that they throw a party for Low Down and offer to fulfill one dream for her. They figure she'll ask for a house, or a sack of gold. But Low Down wants only one thing: a baby.

Since Low Down has been panning for gold for months without a bath, the men are not exactly eager to sleep with her. However, they are determined to discharge their debt to her, so all the single men line up and draw marbles from a bag. The man who draws a marble scratched with a X has to do the deed. Max McCord is the lucky man, and before he knows it, a preacher insists that he not only sleep with Low Down, but marry her as well. Max owns a ranch on the Colorado plains, and has only been in Piney Creek for the summer, sowing some wild oats. Since his own wedding to another woman is already scheduled to take place in two weeks, marrying Low Down is the last thing he wants to do. But she saved his life and he knows the other men are counting on him, so he goes through with it."

The man's fiancee claims she's having his baby, so his brother marries her. It later turns out the baby is a half-breed, by someone else.

12bs, was "Silver Lining" your book?

12bs's only activity on GR is this one post (a drive-by, as I like to call it), so if we don't hear back from him or her this can be Abandoned or Possibly Solved, whatever people think is best.

Ok, I am pretty much positive that that IS 12bs book. Since we still haven't heard anything, I'm moving this down to Possibly solved. (And I read the book because of Pam and really liked it.)
