Barb TITLE CHAIN
idea borrowed from my friends over at Second Chance Challenges

This game will be just for fun – no points, no pressure, nothing but reading books you already plan to read! The idea is to create a chain using words in our book titles, and see how long we can keep the chain going :)

In a message below, I will post the title of a book that one of our teammates has already read for this challenge. The next person – whoever posts next, there's no taking turns in this game :) – would post his/her intent to read a book in which ANY ONE WORD in the title matches one word in the originally posted book. The next player would then have to choose a book with a word in its title that matches the second book, and so on.

When you have read your posted book, come back and tell us when you finished it and give it a star rating; a short review is optional. You are then eligible to post another book, based on the last book that's been posted in the chain. I will try to keep the list of posted books current in Message #3 ; if you're not sure what the current book title is, please check there! If there is no movement in the thread in one week's time, we reserve the right to start over again with a different book at the beginning of the chain :)

EXAMPLE:
This is NOT the game, it’s just an example, for clarification of the way the game works!

We start with A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court

Steven posts that he will read The KING'S Deception
Barb posts that she will read The DECEPTION of the Emerald Ring
Jane posts that she will read The EMERALD Atlas
Evana posts that she will read THE Beekeeper's Apprentice

By this time, Steven has finished The King's Deception and reports his completion date and star rating. He is now eligible to select another book, and based on Evana's post, he posts that he will read APPRENTICE to the Flower Poet Z.: A Novel.

RULES:
* ANY word in the title counts, even 'little' words like A, An, The, Is, etc. ONLY TITLES count for this game, no series names or author names.
* Once you post that you intend to read a book, you cannot change it, since the chain would be broken.
* You must finish your posted book before posting your intent to read another.
* Titles must be at least 3 words long to give other players a choice of words.
* Possessives and plurals will be accepted as long as the base word does not change. Example: CARS would work to match CAR, but GEESE would not work to match GOOSE.
* Compound words will NOT be accepted. Example: FIREPLACE would not work to match FIRE.

Barb The first book in our chain will be:
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared , read by Nancy last month.

So ... who has a book with a title word that can be found in Nancy's title?

message 7: by Barb (new)

Barb I went through my list of books yet to read this month, and I found one that fits for this game:

The Long Quiche Goodbye (A Cheese Shop Mystery #1) by Avery Aames   The Long Quiche Goodbye --> matching word = THE

I know that doesn't give the rest of you much to work with, but the opens up a LOT of possibilities :)

message 10: by Steven (new)

Black The Birth of Evil (The Circle, #1) by Ted Dekker Black: The Birth of Evil --> Matching Words = THE and OF

message 11: by Barb (new)

Barb Yay, more people want to play :) I've added your titles to the tracking thread above. When you post here that you've finished, I'll cross out that book and you can post another book, based on the last title on the list.

message 12: by Jane (new)

Jane | 206 comments I finished my first book.

Barb Finally finished The Long Quiche Goodbye (A Cheese Shop Mystery #1) by Avery Aames , the first in (yet another) new mystery series for me.

I'll look through my upcoming books to see if anything fits the last book in the chain.

message 17: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I finished Black!

Trying to figure out my next stop. The Eye of God by James Rollins should be delivered tomorrow and that would work, but all we keep matching is the and of!

message 18: by Barb (new)

Barb I found one! I'm going to read The Quick and the Thread (An Embroidery Mystery, #1) by Amanda Lee .
Matching word = THE

message 19: by Barb (new)

Barb Steven wrote: "Trying to figure out my next stop. The Eye of God by James Rollins should be delivered tomorrow and that would work, but all we keep matching is the and of!"

I keep trying to match another word, but nothing else fits ... yet! I'm determined to come up something somewhere along the line :)

I've added The Eye of God: A Sigma Force Novel to the post above with our chain. Do you want me to delete it while you look for something else?

message 20: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Nah might as well keep the "THE" chain going... At least it is a chain!

message 21: by Barb (new)

Barb OK lol Sooner or later, someone will match a different word :)

message 22: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Jun 25, 2013 08:54PM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 240 comments Finished; The Lady of Secrets (The Dark Queen Saga, #6) by Susan Carroll . Nice historical with paranormals elements. ****. finished 26th June.

Barb Finished The Quick and the Thread (An Embroidery Mystery, #1) by Amanda Lee , the first of a fun new-to-me cozy mystery series.

I'll look for my next book tomorrow :)

message 24: by Barb (new)

Barb Nevermind, I found one in my pile of library books that I need to read soon:
The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag (Flavia de Luce, #2) by Alan Bradley

word matched = THE

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 240 comments Intriguing title, Barb. What genre is it?

message 26: by Barb (new)

Barb Mystery, Lisa, set in the 1950s in England. This is the second in the series, and I really enjoyed the first, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce, #1) by Alan Bradley , so I have high hopes.

It's different from most mysteries in that the 'sleuth' is an 11 year girl who is "an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison."

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 240 comments The Weed that strings the Hangman's Bag....

My Matching Word THE

THE Confessions of Catherine de Medici The Confessions of Catherine De Medici by C.W. Gortner

message 28: by Steven (new)

Daughter of Dragons by Kathleen H. Nelson Matching word = OF and DRAGONS

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 240 comments Finally someone has been able to match a word other than of, and or the. Great Work, Jane!

message 32: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Hopefully someone can match something and keep the chain going with good words instead of THE... Though I might have an OF that will match hehe!

Nice job Jane!

message 33: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) Sadly, I've already chosen my books for this coming month, but if any of them fit, I'll certainly post them here.

In the meantime, commenting so that I get email updates on this thread :D

ETA: The chain has been updated in message #3. Good job on finally finding a "real" word to match :) Now I need to finish my book so I can see what I have that will fit! LOL

message 38: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Finished Andy Smithson: Blast of the Dragon's Fury...

I will claim City of Bones to match BONE, I think. :)

message 39: by Barb (new)

Barb I'll add your book to the chain :) This is getting to be fun!

message 40: by Diane L (last edited Jul 05, 2013 04:20PM) (new)

Diane L Finished Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith and Love on 5 July. 4* A lot of interesting information about early science, Galileo's family life and his trial before the Inquisition.

Matching BONES from Time Lord Steven's post #38.
Reading: Bones of Betrayal by Jefferson Bass.

message 41: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Jul 08, 2013 08:18PM) (new)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 240 comments Finished The Confessions of Catherine de Medici. ****. 7/9. Really well written historical novel on one of history's most reviled yet misunderstood French Queens.

Next book: The Seduction OF Phaeton Black.

Matching word: OF

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 240 comments Finished The Seduction of Phaeton Black. 3.5 - 4 stars. 7/11.

message 43: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I'm almost done with City of Bones. ALMOST. X)

message 44: by Barb (new)

Barb I think I'm *finally going to get to The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag this weekend! *sigh*

message 45: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I might read the first of that series next month for a "new to me" author or a color cover book!

message 46: by Barb (new)

Barb It's a really fun series, as long as you can handle a 'heroine' who's a precocious 11-year-old :)

message 47: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I'm sure I can. :) That makes it sound so much more fun than the stereotypical adults they use for modern mystery series :P

message 48: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) I have about 25 pages left in City of Bones, so you can mark it as finished. I'll be finishing it over the next few hours, sneaking a few pages here and there at work haha.

Now to find something else on the chain to read!

Guess since I'm in the middle of The Graveyard Book, I'll claim THE from Lisa's last book and finish that one :D

message 49: by Barb (new)

Barb You've probably finished it by now, but I'll mark it done, Steven, and add Gaiman's book to the chain :)

message 50: by Steven (new)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) Yep, and read a bunch of Gaiman!
