Susan | 6406 comments Funny, I lost much of the need or desire to explain myself and my actions to anyone back in high school.

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments In Misha's honor, I'm listening to Beyonce's "If I Were a Boy."

Puts on Beyonce's "Run The World (Girls)".

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I followed it up with "Kiss My Ass" by Country Joe McDonald. I sure do miss a good protest song. Are there any new ones written these days?

message 57: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Agreed.

message 58: by Sarah (last edited Jun 19, 2013 08:22AM) (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I think the songs are being written, but the music world is more fractured so they aren't getting heard.

Folk was the music of the 1960s protests, but it's a tiny fraction of today's market and radio. I say that as an unrepentant folkie. Folk protest is still being written, but you have to work harder to find it, and if you write it, you have to work harder to get heard. Well, unless you go viral.

There are some good protest songs in rock and rap as well, though they aren't the ones that get airplay. I would have called Rage Against the Machine protest music back in the day. And a whole lot of punk.

Lastly, the protests in the rest of the world are full of music. It's just not in languages we understand, or it's in modes or styles that are foreign to our ears. There are some brave, brave musicians out there writing songs to fuel their countries' revolutions.

:)

Sarah | 13814 comments Sure! My friend Mosno would be an easy example. He's Sudanese.
Here's an interview with him: http://blog.songpier.com/2012/12/17/m...
and here's his song "System Down": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLJde1...

Here's an NPR piece from earlier this week about protest music on an upstart Libyan radio station: http://www.npr.org/blogs/parallels/20...

message 65: by [deleted user] (new)

Scout, I was not a member when I posted that...FYI.

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, and thank you, Misha. I think it's fair to say that you spoke many of our minds.

message 67: by Aliyah (new)

Aliyah | 369 comments Indeed. Seriously, I don't get why someone would be mad for not getting an invite to TCJ.

message 68: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) i would say that Misha spoke my mind as well, and i'm not even in the group, but then i've always thought Scout was both strangely offensive and defensive all at the same time. it's a curious mix. but i feel sorry for her and so the understandable smack-down from Misha sorta made me feel bad. i can't help but feel sorry for a person who so clearly feels left out. and yet that being left out, and the reactions to her many comments about private profiles or private groups ad nauseum, does not appear to have been cause for any sort of analysis or even minimal self-reflection. sad sigh?

no i will reserve my sad sigh for less LG. that is just not right! LG = Terminal Coffee in my estimation.

message 69: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 19, 2013 02:10PM) (new)

Really? LG = Terminal Coffee? Hmmm. She's smart and quick witted, sometimes funny as all hell and great with a pic. But, saying she IS TC? No. That diminishes too many fantastic, clever, brilliant friends here. I have to totally and yet respectfully disagree, Mark.

message 70: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) oh that is only in my estimation, Amelia! when i think "Terminal Coffee", the first things that come to my mind are (1)Lobstergirl ::sigh::, (2) Cute Aminals Thread, (3)isn't that Susan a sweetie? a purely subjective perspective, i admit.

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

Susan is a sweetie. She's like peach pie with a side of vanilla bean.

*ponders baking pie tonight*

I feel okay with it.

Aww, you guys!

I feel like blushing and awarding myself a slice of pie.

message 73: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) i wish i could make a pie. i think i would make a strawberry & rhubarb, my favorite.

message 74: by [deleted user] (new)

Why can't you, Mark?

message 75: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) that's a good point. why exactly can't i? intimidated i think. i make a lot of savory things, some that include baking, but have never made something sweet. or a pie. i'm gonna do it!

message 76: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 19, 2013 02:28PM) (new)

Here's an easy trick. Get some Minute Tapioca, it's by the puddings, looks like a little teeny box of minute rice. You put a bit of that (there are suggestions on the back depending on what kind of pie) in with the fruit and sugar and it helps it set up and not be all watery. Piece of cake! Or, pie...

(Pecan pie is probably the easies dessert on earth!)

Go for it!

message 78: by [deleted user] (new)

Why won't my pics post?

STUUUUUPID GR!

message 79: by mark (last edited Jun 19, 2013 02:31PM) (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) thanks for the tip! the idea of tapioca with strawberry & rhubarb sounds odd to me but then i've never made a pie. i don't want it to be watery either so i like that part. but first i have to see if the market has any strawberries & rhubarb. if not, then blueberries i think. this will be great when folks come over to watch a Game of Thrones marathon tonight! or possibly an embarrassing disaster i suppose. no, i'm gonna think positive and go shopping now.

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

Pffft!

message 81: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) maybe a link then if the pic isn't posting?

message 82: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I want pie now.

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

Mark, it doesn't resemble tapioca at all. It's a little red box, by the instant pudding. It just makes the pie innards set up nice. Minute Tapioca. You can't miss it.

message 84: by [deleted user] (new)

Lar, I'll bake you a pie next month. What kind d'you want?

I have to also disagree. Bunwat, Barb, Sarah Pi, Phil and Misha are also interesting. Heidi has that maternal online persona.

Random Antony and Arminius also have posted interesting threads (circa 2011 and before), but they are MIA.

message 87: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) who's Phil?

message 88: by Félix (new)

Aliyah | 369 comments mark wrote: "who's Phil?"

Phil is a regular who posts stuff under the thread: "When Was The Last Time You Ate. Hotdog & Cosco Disucssion> But That was a Long Time Ago". Can't remember under what folder that is under.

Clark=Dr Detroit and is the man who coined the phrase for TC (i.e. "This is not a tupperware party for assholes").He's active under the music thread.

Aliyah | 369 comments Misha wrote: "Aliyah -- It's not World War III. Honestly. We've had much bigger blowouts than this with nary a scratch."

Noted, although I don't see you as the boogieman, I would like to know though why Scout retaliated this way. Because, it isn't the first time that she complained about feeling left out etc. (In her defense, I can understand why she's upset-because she has been a TC member for a long time. Saw this under the members tab).

message 93: by Scout (last edited Jun 24, 2013 09:40PM) (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments Actually, I'm not happy. This was a great group. I'm obviously not the only one who feels that what you guys have done betrays all the principles you've espoused in your discussions here.

message 94: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Oh blah.

message 95: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) Scout, like most groups, TC has often had an insular feeling to it. And a sometimes genuinely unwelcoming vibe. I think it is to be expected with all massive groups that have a 'core' group of people generating posts and talking to each other. But surely you realize you have contributed to that "principle" yourself? It is both hilarious and ironic to me that you are now complaining about something that you yourself have enacted on a fairly regular basis.

But I do feel bad that you feel bad.

message 96: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments The principles I'm referring to are those of including everyone in the discussion, on an equal basis. When the "core group" forms a private group, they're being exclusive, not an ideal they've espoused here. Hypocritical.

message 97: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments Cheap attempt to shut someone up and avoid discussion. Use words to reply, if you have something to say.

Back to post # 125.

message 98: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments I don't really understand why you are feeling this way. The "core group" which you seem to be angry with for being in another, private group are the same people who still come here and comment. They do so more than you and keep the group's activity afloat. They joke, laugh and have fun *gasp* right out here in the open. For all to enjoy! Shocking.

I think it is over a feeling of being left out that you are hurt. You should not. It has nothing to do with shunning or keeping people out. For me, it is more about being able to have the few that I wish held a little closer and let into my life a little more.

But I still take time to come over here and talk to people I enjoy. When they are enjoyable, that is.
