A rare case where the trilogy gets better as it goes along. Im glad you're liking it so far :)

Just finished James and the Giant Peach (because somehow I missed it when I was younger), and have just started The Burning Bridge. It's good so far.
Sidebar - does anyone know if there is going to be a Ranger's Apprentice movie?

Jenny | 114 comments Recently threw away $40 on 1Q84 1-3 and want to warn others NOT to waste their money. I only managed half of book 1 before throwing in the towel. There is so much wrong with this book, but perhaps the worst is the deeply disturbing and sexually sick nature of the plot - and I quit before the truly bad stuff got going. Don't believe all the good reviews. There are claims this author is a genius at weaving fantasy and surrealism into his narrative. If this is true, it got lost somewhere in translation.

I'm so sorry about your disappoointment, Jenny. You might know that Kindle on Amazon is a good place to check out books if they are available for download before you buy. They allow you to download a free sample. Amazon print books sometimes have Look Inside the Book which could be a help.
It's goes to show the power of advertising, doesn't it. It's happened to me and not only with books.

Jenny | 114 comments Good point, Laurel. I also buy e-books on Amazon and have read samples before. Unfortunately 1Q84 was an impulse buy. I saw it in one volume and recalling a poitive review thought I'd give it a go. Buy in haste, repent at leisure, I guess.

Maggie I'm reading two books at present - something I dont usually do. One is In the Sun which I'm really enjoying. The other is the sequel to Salvation Creek : An unexpected Life called The House at Salvation Creek. It's good, but not as good as the first book.

Laurel Lamperd December's Calamity's Corner - For Readers, Writers and Movie Buffs at Leisure.
Looking for a book to read - authors of the month books presented.
Lyn Jug reviews Colleen McCullough's new book, The Independence of Miss Mary Bennett, the least prepossessing of the Bennett girls in Pride & Prejudice. I always had a sneaking sympathy for Mary who was always depicted quite meanly in the many movie and TV portrayals of P&P.

Adhityani (dhitri) Finally picked up my first fiction in what seemed like FOREVER! Uni is on break, yay! And so, predictably, I decided to read this year's Booker Prize Winner The Sense of an Ending - if anyone is interested to read along will create a separate thread for discussion. Supposed to be reaaaaally good if you're into British wit.

Mel, I never finished Room it was waaaaay too terrifying for me (being a first time mum, I kept cuddling bubba after each chapter). so I stopped halfway through but now that you're reading it, might see if I can pick it up again this holidays and finish it.

Really? I didn't think it was terrifying enough; but I'm not a mum

Maybe I was too emotionally involved with the story but generally any story on (child) abuse freaks me out these days.

I am the same these days, actually most stories in which a child gets hurt, taken away etc freaks me out. Never used to be this way before I had children.

message 2831: by Nicki (new)

Nicki Markus (nickijmarkus) | 168 comments I am currently reading The Iron King by Kagawa. It's okay, but I am not amazed. I preferred Wicked Lovely, which I read a few days ago.
Next I have a copy of The Sounding by Salo that I was sent for review and then I am looking forward to getting stuck in to Discovery of Witches.

that's understandable, but I think this is more a book of discovery than abuse.

I dont really have that whole mum thing..so to be burtally honest things happening to kids dont get to me that way...granted kids them selfs scare me haha!

Im an animal person you can kill or hurt anything, to it do an animal and im out hahaha.

I picked up August by Bernard Beckett this morning and read it at work...all of it!
it was amazing I really recommend it
i did a review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... it was done on my phone and a little rushed so sorry for all the mistakes haha.

it was nothing like I thought it would be the description is so misleading!

message 2835: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Knowledge Lost wrote: "Really? I didn't think it was terrifying enough; but I'm not a mum"

I found the book more annoying than anything else, and I also didnt think of it as a book about abuse (except of the woman of course).
And I'm with you Mel re the animal thing.

message 2836: by [deleted user] (new)

seriously I watch all types of horror and just not right movies...fine with it all the moment some guy kills the puppy...all is lost for me!
could not handle secret window! (well just that scene the rest of the movie was awesome)

message 2837: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3601 comments Good morning I have finished All That I AmI have been pondering over this book for days now. Not really sure how I feel about it. The four main characters are real people and they had a very interesting past but I found the format/structure of the book too confusing and hard to follow. I think I would have liked it more if it was written as a non-fiction. So I only gave it 2 ½ stars.

@Michael, Melanie…and if anyone else is interested. Here’s my review

Maggie Just finished a few for the various challenges: In the Sun, a great tense read, A Christmas Beginning: A Novel not too good surprisingly, The House at Salvation Creek only ok.

Now I have to decide what to read next, and most importantly what book(s) to take away with me.

I've got the kindle version so i've only just seen the cover. I wouldn't recommend it because there is so many ERRORS in the book..Not the writer but the formating of the book is really bad. However, I got it for free so I shall not complain lol Not bad romance story either ;D
