Moi (moimoi) I'm about a third of the way through Hilary Mantel's ' A Place of Greater Safety' and the first 250 pages were good but I put it down and now have lost the momentum and probably the grip on various characters... I may have to put it aside and go back to read it all afresh another time...

Louise (louisecc) | 192 comments I've just finished The Briny Cafe by Australian author Susan Duncan. About to start Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution and looking forward to it. Today I also read Twisted Tales: Six Fairy Tales Turned Inside Out which has an interesting spin on fairy tales such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Rumpelstiltskin!

message 2603: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Louise I also finally started Madame Tussaud: A Novel of the French Revolution this morning. Hope we both enjoy it.

I just finished reading Bliss. I had to read it for school, so it's not really the type of book I would usually pick up, but was OK enough. Has anyone else read it?

Finished The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness and started Un Lun Dun by China Miéville

message 2617: by Kay (new)

Kay | 9 comments Just finished Beautiful Thing by Sonia Faleiro & started "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet" by Jamie Ford. I've started the latter because I noticed it on the MAN Booker shelf and saw thought it sounded a little like "Snow Falling on Cedars" in plot. Wondered if the author had a different view of the relationship between North Americans and Japanese residents during the Second World War.

Plus it's cool he's a fellow Aussie (John Flanagan who wrote the Ranger's Apprentice series, not Walt Disney haha.) I heard he came up with the series as short stories in order to get his son interested in reading. That's pretty cool.

message 2635: by Louise (new)

Louise (louisecc) | 192 comments The Alienist is one that I've been procrastinating over reading. Might give it a go now!

I've also just finished a 'light read' of No Mercy (Dark-Hunter, #19). Kenyon is always good for a dose of ripped male bodies, clad (usually) in leather, with kick-ass fighting skills. I think I might need to visit New Orleans and hang out on some street corners..... :)

message 2637: by Chantel (new)

Chantel | 10 comments One thousand chestnut tress by Mira Stout about half way through it :)

message 2638: by Jacqui (new)

Jacqui (acquija) | 6 comments I'm reading Gillian Mears' new novel Foal's Bread as part of a read-along. I'm struggling with it. I'm half way through and am still not connecting with the characters. In fact, they irritate me. I don't really know where the novel is going. It raises issues, but doesn't deal with them. I've read a few other reviews, and some say that Mears is masterful and uses a lot of restraint. However, others are saying that she's irresponsible and butchering it. This is a love it or hate it book. But I think it's going to generate a lot of talk.

I just saw the movie 'Real Steel' last night and was excited and surprised that the story idea came from a short story. Does anyone know where I might be able to get the short story? Thanks. =)

message 2640: by Tango (new)

Tango | 290 comments I'm finally getting around to Mansfield Park my final Jane Austen. I am really enjoying it. I've read mixed reviews but I like Fanny, she is quite different from Austen's usual heroine.

Real Steel: An Illustrated History of the World's Greatest Trains by Colin Dennis Garratt

That's the only book that's on GR called Real Steel Shelly. Do you have an author for the book? Any more information?

I think the short story might just be called 'steel'. it might be by richard matheson. Thanks for the help. I might have to try and find it in a compilation of short stories or something like that. =)
