I am reading a few, as per usual, first up is
The Accidental Empress by Allison Pataki - set in 1853 this is about 'Sissi' Empress of the Austrian/Hungarian empire and aunt of Archduke Ferdinand whose assassination started WWI - her summer palace (Schonbrunn) was in Vienna and we will be visiting that in April so chose the book as 'research' :)Also reading
The Truth About Peacock Blue by Rosanne Hawke set in Pakistan it based on a true story. And then for my light and fluffy I am reading
Maple Mayhem by Jessie Crockett
I've started reading Spirits of the Ghan byJudy Nunn This is the first book I've read of Judy's and love the opening :)

Love that book Sharon!!!
Love that book Sharon!!!

I hope to, too!
Sharon wrote: "I've started reading Spirits of the Ghan byJudy Nunn This is the first book I've read of Judy's and love the opening :)"I've recently finished this and loved it - tried one of her books years ago and couldn't get into it - but this sucked me straight in!
Ryan wrote: "I'm reading Crime and Punishment, my first ever Russian."How are you finding it, Ryan? I'm stalled on my first ever Russian, at the moment. Hadji Murad by Tolstoy. It's barely more than a novella, so I really have no excuse to not finish it :-(
It might be the translation, but the best word for the writing style is 'quaint'. I like Raskolnikov. What a ratbag! It's good to see disaffected young men are no different regardless of time and place.
cue the twilight zone music again:just finished (and very much enjoyed) Yann Martel's latest, The High Mountains of Portugal which featured a Dora;
now I'm reading Wanting by Richard Flanagan, and, you guessed it, another Dora
it's not THAT common a woman's name.....
Lol now that is funny..Dora isn't common..only one that comes to mind quickly is Dora the Explorer..lol
I've actually had a few of those lately too...it's weird how it happens! A bit disconcerting actually!

I just signed up to Audible and picked up Welcome to Bordertown. So I'm listening while I unpack boxes.
Well, actually, Phrynne, Wanting has a lot about Dickens in it, and I think he named his daughter Dora after his character (or vice versa?), and that's the Dora I am referring to so we are thinking of the same one!
I'm reading two books at present, and both are brilliant, so I thought I'd share. In fiction, I'm about 3/4 through Life is Elsewhere by Milan Kundera. I adore all Kundera's work. He and Murakami are both great at capture feelings I've had myself, and their works are so expressive.
In non-fiction, I am reading a book on gay subculture in Georgian England. It was hard to get hold of a copy of this (most around are $$$), but I'm glad I did. I'm 1/3 through and it's fascinating. Plus it will be so useful as a reference work for my own writing as I have already written a couple of 18thC-setting MM shorts.
I've started Avenue of Mysteries by John Irving. Already I'm starting to be entranced by the captivating way of story telling which Irving has. But I'm not sure how this book and I will travel as it has quite small writing, fingers crossed.
I have read quite a few books lately:Reclaim My Love
2 stars- It was a little bit boring, but the characters were better written than Lucia Jordan's characters. Party of Three
3 stars - I gave this one three stars. It was naughty, but lighthearted and fun, too. I love the banter between Levi and Spencer, who have been best mates since boyhood. I was laughing so damn hard. The Alpha's Mark
3 stars- This is a silly little werewolf tale about a young woman about to go to college, but when she kills a wolf on a car accident, she is targeted by other members of the pack. Three stars, because the author cannot spell and often uses the incorrect words.Unexpected Gifts
4 stars. A cute little short story about a woman who has come out of a broken marriage and realises that she loves a guy she has known since childhood. This is really adorable!Double Her Fantasy
3 stars- The characters in this were well written and very likeable.
B the BookAddict wrote: "Now we know what you've been doing, Kiera!"Haha, I have been a little bit AWOL, haven't I? I've also been writing like a demon and my Nan passed away two weeks ago and we had her memorial service yesterday. So, yeah I've been really busy.
Thanks Brenda. I just finished House for all Seasons
on my iPhone. My review:

Sorry to hear about that Kiera :(--
I finished one book and straight onto another...However, this time I'm going for fiction...We Are All Made Of Glue..It's got a quirky type of flow to it...I bought it years ago as a discounted book..Someone has damaged the front cover :( But I don't imagine holding onto it when I'm done either.
Just started Infidel by Kameron Hurley. It's book two in a fairly out there science-fantasy series, and I liked the first one a lot. This will be the first time in a long time that I've read a novel by an author whom I've read before.
I'm reading another Kay Scarpetta book by Patricia Cornwell, Dust. After this, I have 1 more in the series to read, but I have decided that, no matter how cheap they are, I'm not buying any more. Just getting sick of Kay Scarpetta's moaning, and the way the books are so padded with mundane detail. I will be tenacious with this one and the next, but after that it's goodbye and good riddance, Kay!
A pity, because Cornwell's first books in this series were great...
I'm currently reading the biography for Gypsy Lee Rose- it's a little bit tedious and jumping around the place though American Rose: A Nation Laid Bare: The Life and Times of Gypsy Rose Lee

I even gave the whole set of books away.

I don't mind a bit of grit and realism with my murder mysteries, but there is a line and she crossed it for me! Perhaps I'd feel more able to deal with it now, but now I don't feel inclined to try! And there are plenty more murder mysteries that I'd rather use my time reading!

Jools, not better. Probably dumber, it's taken me this much longer to decide to stop wasting good reading time! My sister gave up on this series several books ago....

I just finished Beautiful Illusion
. Wow, wow, WOW! I don't usually properly, physically cry with many books. But this one really hit me in the heart. I cried like a baby. I love books that elicit such powerful emotions from me. Leah and Brennan's story is heartbreaking. If you guys haven't read it yet, do yourselves a huge favour!
I'm completely immersed in A Dance to the Music of Time: 1st Movement every time I put the book down I find myself having to take some time to adjust to the modern time reality I'm in, the setting in the era is so completely real to me and its so captivating!
I'm in a crime/thriller/mystery mood. I'm currently reading NYPD Red #2 by James Patterson & Marshall Karp. Really enjoying this series!

I liked that one Nancy. It's a whole lot of reading to do all three 'Movements' but very worthwhile!

I've just started reading "A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara. Apparently it's quite depressing...and I've just gotten over "The Kite Runner", this is going to be interesting.
