Not good at challenges :-) ... I always fail miserably. LOL

message 1153: by [deleted user] (new)

Hahaha I think I've set myself up this year to fail all challenges. I am glad I have company. :)

message 1154: by Iris (new)

Iris Blobel (iris-b) | 127 comments I think I've got an overload of challenges ... LOL ... kids, hubby, work .... anybody wanna join. AND the current challenge is to get my mss rewritten for the publisher .... which makes keeping my eyes open during the day a challenge ...

Gail, what are you currently reading ?

message 1155: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm currently reading People of the Book so I can tick off one from the Aussie Author Challenge and the Aussie Autumn Challenge. Combining them is the only way I can hope to get even close to finishing the challenges.

message 1156: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sorcha-sidhe) It's been awhile since I updated here! I think the last time I posted I was starting Anne of Cleves: Henry VIII's Discarded Bride, which was enjoyable but unfortunately didn't provide me with the information fix I needed (I already knew it all, the Tudor tragic that I am!).

Since then I have finished both Eat, Pray, Love and Dance Lessons: A Novel - two very different books to what I would normally read, but I enjoyed them. I especially recommend Dance Lessons: A Novel, a contemporary novel set between Boston and the west of Ireland, which I was invited to read by the author (still very greatful for that). It was also my first time reading a novel in e-book format! I used Adobe Digital Editions and read it on the computer during slow periods at work. I thought I would hate reading e-books, but doing it this way was surprisingly easy and convenient.

Now I am reading Son of the Shadows (paperback); about 18 months ago I read Daughter of the Forest, which is the first book in Marillier's "Sevenwaters" series, and absolutely loved it. I have Son of the Shadows on loan from a friend at the moment; about a third of the way through and enjoying it immensely.

~S.

You have been busy Sarah.

message 1158: by Maggie (last edited Mar 21, 2011 09:26PM) (new)

Maggie Sarah, I have a copy of Marillier's Daughter of the Forest on my shelf - bought it recently at my marvelous book exchange. This author has been recommended to me by a few people now. Hopefully if I ever get through the challenges I have set for myself (including some totally unrelated to GR ie work / study) I will get a chance to read it.

Michael (knowledgelost) I just finished Mildred Pierce, now to read The Road

Mildred Pierce by James M. Cain The Road by Cormac McCarthy

How did you find The Road? I have it on my TBR.

message 1162: by Lesley (last edited Mar 21, 2011 10:22PM) (new)

Lesley | 328 comments I'd like to get around to The Road by Cormac McCarthy
soon too. I am almost halfway through The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas . I'm quite enjoying it but I do think that all the Fs and Cs are a little OTT, or am I just getting old?

message 1163: by [deleted user] (new)

I think we all felt the same Lesley. We had a bit of a discussion going on the slap if you would like to add your contribution. The Slap Discussion

It is such a good read, Maggie! I hope you will like it when you get the time to read it. I found it started a little slow, but about a third of the way through it becomes a real page-turner. I ended up loving it!

message 1173: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) The Road seems to be popular here at the moment. I'm about half way through it now, I've seen the movie, so I know what to expect; but I didn't expect it to be so well written (once you're use to the style)

message 1174: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Michael, Alex & Me... is on my wishlist. I look forward to hearing what you think of it.

I just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Good, not great, book. No idea though why it was assigned to you, Jessica - did your teacher expect teenagers to appreciate it? Or am I misremembering why you read it?

message 1175: by [deleted user] (new)

i have never seen the movie for the road and didn't even know there was one now i'm soo tempted to see it ..nut not before i read the book :D

The Book is better

message 1177: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Cheryl, it wasnt assigned, it was recommend. My maths teacher from last year knew I liked reading, so she asked if I had read that book. She had just finished herself and loved it, and said I might as well.
So I she told me what it was about, it sounded good, and I gave it a try.
Its enjoyable, I guess, though ultimately forgettable.

The Road is a really good book. I was talking about it today with my year 6 teacher from four years ago. I told her to read it :)
Its very, very good.

message 1178: by Alex (new)

Alex Smith | 5 comments Hey! Currently re-reading Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries series. If you are a chic-lit (with a bit of romance and comedy) loving teenager like me these are a must read- WAY better than the movies and there is 10 in the series all together.

message 1180: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Thanks for clarifying about Guernsey..., Jessica. It's terrific to share ideas & recommendations with teachers, but of course they're likely to have a different perspective so the fit isn't always perfect! :)

Thanks Jayne, just read it...how devastating for June. Extremely brave to put her grief into words! Don't know if I could read it, as it's so incredibly sad, but I'll put it on my TBR list!! :)

Yes, very brave. Although it is a very sad story it also highlights resilience in the face of adversity. Great read.

Neko @Carmel- It's worth picking up, if it's the type of book that interests you. I still can't believe this is still going on and the fact that this is all up to date! It's really quite sad.

@Maggie- Yay! You'll have to let me know what you think of it as well :) I can see myself getting carried away reading it.
