I'm actually very impressed with the quality of historical accuracy. The tv series The Tudors was a good show, but it took vast liberties with true facts. 'Elizabeth the Queen' is rich with knowledge, sumptuous detail, and it appears Alison Weir really researched her project thoroughly before committing it to paper. She brings Elizabeth vibrantly to life without omitting her failures and foibles... Ok, I've rambled, but I hope somewhere in there I answered your question :-)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) James Church writes a mystery/spy series set in North Korea and I'm reading the third in the series called Bamboo and Blood. This is unfolding just as a reading-soured book glutton might hope: I am savoring each of the last pages, wishing it wouldn't end.Bamboo and Blood

You've got a way with words Trish! The book sounds delicious.:)

message 906: by Marg (new)

Marg (margreads) | 86 comments Started The Marsh King's Daughter by Elizabeth Chadwick! I like her books a lot, so I expect to enjoy this one too.

message 907: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sorcha-sidhe) I finished reading Twilight of Avalon by Anna Elliott: It is no masterpiece, but I still enjoyed it a lot! I think the story Elliott told and the way she told it worked really well. Recommend it!

Now I'm reading Servants of the Supernatural: The Night Side of the Victorian Mind by Antonio Melechi, a history of the Victorian Spiritualist Movement. It's fascinating.

And today I'm going to read my friend's first published work, a short story called Awaken To The Night (Goodreads Author Nicki J. Markus), which I'm really looking forward to. :)

Happy reading!
~S.

I have that one on my TBR shelf, together with the second one in the series Dark Moon of Avalon.

I've just finished Just Listen, pretty good actually. I started Border Watch at about 3.30 this morning, not too sure about that one so far. Hot weather has meant I've had a chance to catch up on some reading.

message 911: by Maggie (last edited Jan 31, 2011 08:50PM) (new)

Maggie Finished Border Watch which improved as it went along. Will start a book from my Aussie Author challenge next, or the Mardi Gras ones. OR try to finish a few books (mainly work related) that have been on my currently reading list for ages.

I love Hunger Games and Catching Fire. I gave both 5 stars. However, I hated hated hated hated Mockingjay. absolutely awful and disappointing book. I gave it 2 stars and went on a long and ranting review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I hope you enjoy it more then I did.

Anyway, I am STILL reading City of Ashes. I like it, but its taking me ages to read!

Go for the Mardi Gras one considering I think that challenge is only for Feb! But then again, work reading can be important too.

I've started a few books..Straight Talk with Gay Guys, School For Stingers, Rendezvous At Kamakura Inn,Urawaza: Secret Everyday Tips and Tricks from Japan.

I've two books listed as currently reading but I've not opened them yet ^^;;

message 914: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Yay :) The first two books in the Hunger Games trilogy are fantastic. Terrifically addicting and full of twists and turns.

Everybody Ive spoken to says that COG is the absoloute best one, so Ive got massive expectations for that.
Unfortunately, previous books ive had massive expectations for were Mockingjay and Reckless, and we all know how those turned out :(

message 915: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Thats the plan. Fingers crossed :)

message 916: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Lamperd When I was young I read every Anya Seton book I could get my hands on. Rummer Godden was another great favourite. I'm glad these old authors are still being enjoyed. Laurel

Silver Wattle was an amazing read! I still have to read Tuscan Rose. I bought it the first day I saw it but haven't even started it yet.

Now I am reading Outside In by Maria V Snyder.

message 919: by Bronwyn (new)

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments I have just finished reading The Laird Who Loved Me by Karen Hawkins. It was a good read with a few laughs in it.

It is a historical romance and part of a series of siblings who when they get angry cause havoc with the weather.

I have just started reading Eat Prey Love by Kerrelyn Sparks - it's the most recent book in her Love at Stake series. I love this series.

I have also just finished Charm City by Laura Lippman. It was pretty good too, it is also part of a series about Tess Monahan who lives in Baltimore and works part time as a PI. It was a murder mystery.

I am now listening to 52 Waratah Avenue by Lynne Wilding. It a family story set in Sydney and it's pretty good too so far.

I am also listening to Shall We Dance? by Maggie Alderson. It's okay but I have not really warmed to the characters yet and I am just over 1/2 way through it. The daughter Theo is so rude I just want to slap her and the mother has problems of her own. The characters I do like are the mother's best friends, a gay man and a old rocker. I will finish it and who knows I might change my mind a little.

message 920: by Dee-Ann (new)

Dee-Ann | 644 comments Started reading Succubus Blueswhich is on my summer reading challenge. This is my 'bus' book to read to and fro work basically. So far it is like a raunchy mills and boons with a paranormal element thrown in.

message 922: by Jennifer (JC-S) (new)

Jennifer (JC-S) (jenniferjc-s) I've just finished reading 'A Waltz for Matilda' by Jackie French which I'd recommend. It's set in the period from 1894 to 1915, covers a lot of issues of historical significance and is a great read. It's mareketed as juvenile fiction, but this adult ceratinly enjoyed it.

Yep, I am *still* on City of Ashes. Only 40 pages left. Hoping to finish tonight or tomorrow. Its not that im not enjoying it-jut the opposite-its amazingly fun to read. However, when I put it down, there is no burning desire to pick it up again in a hurry, like there was with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Angels & Demons or The Ask and the Answer

message 924: by [deleted user] (new)

It's been a while since I read a book that gave me the burning desire to pick it up. The last was a guilty pleasure read.

message 925: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Just about to read Mockingjay, the final in the Hunger Games series. Interested to see what I think cos there's such mixed reviews.

Carmel...."It's been a while since I read a book that gave me the burning desire to pick it up. The last was a guilty pleasure read".... what book was it???

message 926: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments I hate Mockingjay.
It was such a disappointment, and just generally bad. With out spoiling anything, Im going to call it a 'cop out' and 'pathetic'.
However, I hope you enjoy it, and cant wait to see what you think!

Maggie I'll put my Carmel hat on and answer the question. It was Outlander (Note: it is sold in Australia under the name of Cross stitch) I did say it was a guilty pleasure.

message 928: by [deleted user] (new)

It did cross my mind to leave you to answer the question. To save myself the embarrassment of answering it. :D

Bronwyn Rykiert | 315 comments I have just finished reading Eat Prey Love by Kerrelyn Sparks and I absolutlely loved it. This series is just so good.

I have just started reading Heat Seeker by Lora Leigh, it is also part of a series and so far it is pretty good.

I am still listening to 52 Waratah Avenue by Lynne Wilding. It's Australian and I am quite enjoying it.

I am also still listening to Shall We Dance? by Maggie Alderson and I still have not warmed to the 2 main characters - the horrible 21 year old Theo and the silly mother Lou Lou, but I will finish it, I want to fast track to finish it today.

I am having a break before reading 'City of Glass'.
I will be reading Peeps by Scott Westerfeld.
A vampire book that came onto the scene before 'Twilight', so hopefully they are MEAN and NASTY blood sucking machines, instead of the vampire paranormal-romance rubbish published today

But Beneath the Radar sounds interesting.

I am reading Guardian of the Sky Realms. I have only read the prologue. An interesting start so far, intriguing enough to want to continue.
