What Are You Currently Reading? (doesn't have to be an Aussie book)
I'm reading Oranges & Sunshine by Margaret Humphreys - lots of stories about young children sent from Britain to Australia (and Canada and what was then Rhodesia) from the late 1800's until post-WWII (I think 1967 was the last lot) without parental consent, simply because they had the misfortune to be born into or grow up in poverty, illegitimacy or a broken home. During the 1980's, a British social worker discovered that there were children sent on boats from Britain as part of a Child Migrant Scheme and this is her story of searching through old documents to reunite families, dealing with bureaucratic red tape and the secretiveness and refusal to admit any wrongdoing of the organisations that were involved.
It is also the stories of the families separated and of the loss of everything familiar to these young children sent over here, even their identities, in many cases.
I have read this book a while ago. It was very thought provoking. To think this happened not that long ago.
I know, Jo - it's shocking. And even after all this came out in the late '80's/early '90's, I was still unaware of it until I saw the movie when it came out recently! Some people have very tough lives through no fault of their own... It is easy to understand their sense of loss and betrayal and hurt.
I'm reading Big Brother by Lionel Shriver. She doesn't seem as acerbic in this one as compared others she has written. Maybe she's mellowing???
Oh Dear! Just started Fatboy and the Dancing Ladies for the October challenge, then realised it was part of a trilogy which starts with Last Orders at Harrods: An African Tale and ends with Dizzy Worms: The Last Orders At Harrods Trilogy. I've read the first one, but it was before I started reviewing books and my memory of it is a bit vague. Will HAVE to go back & read/review that. Luckily the local library has Dizzy Worms: The Last Orders At Harrods Trilogy so I can borrow that after these 2. My October challenge just got a bit longer.....Reading these on Alexander McCall Smith's recommendation, they are really good, funny and perceptive.

Oh and just looking to see what else Michael Holman has written I see part of the list is a book about teaching yourself Bulgarian which is by a different Michael Holman, a British linguist. Is there a way to fix this? I did put in the author profile and a photo from the publisher's website, and combined a few editions, but I notice a few other books there that aren't his, on the combine page..... Brenda????

It was a good recommendation, Sharon. I don't think I would've come across it otherwise so thanks for that. I'm keen to find out what happens too so will try and finish it tonight.

I'm quite enjoying The Hangman's Daughter, and have just bought the Kindle version of Dear Life: Stories. I've been wanting to read Alice Munro for years, and never got around to it. Her winning the Nobel prize prompted me!
I simply had to finish Straight Man by Richard Russo. I'm all busted up from laughing still... And I'd give a 6★ rating if GR let me.My review is at : https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I finished Playing Beatie Bow by Ruth Park last night. I read this when I was at school, but I don't think I probably fully appreciated it at the time. I was amazed that it was published in 1980 (I didn't realise it was already a decade old when I read it at school) - it doesn't seem like a book set in the late 1970's - it seems more advanced than I would have thought warranted in that time! Certainly the main character seems more advanced than her 14 years of age - she knows more about more things than I think I would have at that age!Great read - I know revisiting books read previously doesn't always pay off, but this one did :-)
