use of the word shteig

In the book, Ron Rubin mentions the Yiddish word, shteig defining it as:to climb, thrive, be stubborn. The definition I get for shteig is to escalate in studying the torah, or, in everyday life, to accumulate wealth and grow. What is the true definition?

It's really the same... To climb, rise, grow - to strive to improve oneself, whether it be in one's knowledge of Torah or one's financial position or just one's position in life. (I don't remember the reference to being stubborn, but could be stubborn as in persistent - to push through in order to keep moving up.)
