I was really intrigued until half-way through and then my attention wavered. I didn't finish the book as I felt like I was plodding through mud.

A number of people told me that they felt the book had run out of steam. I wonder whether it is because the book started as a short story.

What do you think?

I think that could definitely influence the "dragging out" feel that the book had. Did it originally publish as a short story or the author changed their mind as writing it? I'd be interested in reading a short story of it.
