Jessica | 82 comments The TV series has disappointed me. I read all the books last summer and loved them, but the TV show seems pretty slow and uneventful in comparison. I have continued to watch it as it is still entertaining and I love watching adaptations to see how other people interpret novels. I was looking forward to the Red Wedding, but it wasn't as intense as in the book, and seemed a little rushed. Also, the woman who plays Daenerys cannot act, but Peter Dinklage is great as Tyrion.

Having said all that, I am looking forward to next series which should include (view spoiler).

I cannot wait for next season. Well - you know of course I have to. But Peter Dinklage is a great actor and I am so looking forward to Tyrion's story arc.

I love most of the cast but I agree with you, the actress who plays Daenerys cannot act. I like her for some reason when she's being tough. But I think she struggles with the role. I also don't like Jon. He is a favorite character in the books but he seems too... simple for me. I don't like Jaime either, another favorite.

There are some actors who have made me love their characters though. I thought Davos in the books was boring but on the show he is one of my favorites. Jorah annoyed me in the books but I love him on the show.

My biggest issue with the show is how much has been changed and switched around. I have read the books but I still find myself very confused.

message 53: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 82 comments Yes, I agree about Davos. Whenever I got to a Davos chapter in the books I would usually end up putting the book aside because I found him so boring, but I really like him in the TV show!

I also get confused. Especially since there are so many minor characters who aren't introduced properly and no-one seems to ever say their name so I'm like 'Ok so who's that guy?' I'm sure they're showing stuff from the last book with Daenaerys already, like (view spoiler). And a load of the Gendry stuff didn't happen in the books either.

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

Gendry has me so confused it isn't even funny anymore.

I don't understand why HBO ended where and how they did (view spoiler)

message 55: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 82 comments I was wondering the same thing - (view spoiler)

I wonder how far the show will actually get though. I knows it's super popular but it must be crazy expensive, and I seem to recall that was the reason HBO cancelled Rome, but I might be wrong. Also, if George doesn't get his ass into gear and write Winds of Winter, the TV show might well catch up with the books!

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

I've read that the show writers know how the series ends and are prepared to finish with or without Martin. Also, recently they have hinted that if Martin does something that they feel will harm the show, my guess is (view spoiler), they can and will change the story. And Martin has hinted that the show and his books may not end in the same way. And I hope that is the case. If the show moves ahead, and I feel it will, I don't want it to ruin the books. I also don't want the show to influence Martin in any way. Like, keeping a popular character alive for ratings.
If the show does get cancelled before its time, which most of the good shows do, I hope they at least have time to know and quickly end things.

message 57: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 82 comments Oh wow I didn't know that, thanks for sharing. It's interesting that they have the right to change it to such a large extent.

What do you think about (view spoiler)

message 58: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't actually read Dragons for myself yet, but I read the last chapter after I started hearing about all the anger over the end. So my thoughts might not be too accurate but... (view spoiler)

message 59: by MJ (new)

MJ (zombette) | 545 comments I have a crush on Davos.

message 60: by [deleted user] (new)

I love Davos! Which is funny because I hated his sections in the books. Now that I'm reading them again he's one of my favorites.

message 61: by jb (new)

jb Byrkit (jbbyrkit) | 2035 comments I just watched the first episode of season one. I have not read the books.

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

Enjoy :)
As much as I love the books I almost wish I hadn't read them so that I can enjoy the show as an experience on its own. I recommend watching the show first and then reading the books. If you like it of course... Lol.

message 63: by Char (new)

Char | 17498 comments First off, the onion Knight rules!! (Right on,Zombette!)

I have read the books and I'm enjoying the show. (view spoiler)

message 64: by Jason (new)

Jason Parent | 741 comments Agreed, Davos rules! Excellently cast in the show, too, I think. Other than Peter Dinklage, he may the best casting. Well, him and Sean Bean. And the actor who plays Joffrey, does a great job of making you hate him.

message 65: by Erin (new)

Erin (ems84) | 9120 comments After starting the show I definitely want to read the books. I wasn't a fan of the show at first, I found it confusing at times, but then I just decided to stop trying to figure it all out and just enjoy the show for what it is and now I really enjoy it, especially with what happened this past season. I am looking forward to when the show comes back.

message 66: by Hudson (new)

Hudson (bostonrich) | 47 comments Yes, the Onion Knight DOES rule! On of my favorite characters. Charlene, I loved how they would kill of main characters, you just don't see that t0o much. Really keeps you guessing. I loved this series, well most of it anyway. Hooray, a Tyrion chapter! Oh no, a Sansa chapter!

message 67: by Char (new)

Char | 17498 comments LOL Hudson, I hear you!
Tyrion was the best job of casting, EVER. Peter Dinklage OWNS the role. He couldn't be more perfect.

Hudson, I do love how no character is safe. And we learned that very early on with Ned.
I love the series myself, I just wish the last book had furthered the story a little more than it did.

message 68: by Hudson (new)

Hudson (bostonrich) | 47 comments I could not agree more. Dinklage is fantastic, did you ever see The Station Agent?

Dance w/ Dragons was my least favorite GOT book although I still enjoyed it. I am really hoping we do not have to wait as long until the next book. Why do these authors do this to us?? (I'm talking to you Stephen King, Dark Tower series!)

message 69: by Char (new)

Char | 17498 comments Actually, I had a chance to see The Station Agent this weekend, but by the time I discovered it was on, it was half over. I'm going to see if I can get it On Demand.

message 70: by Walter (new)

Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments I remember hearing somewhere that Martin himself had approached Dinklage somewhere, maybe at a theater where Dinklage was performing, because Martin wanted him to play Tyrion. Also read that no one else was even auditioned for the role, which lends a bit of credence to the story.

S2E12 of Hannibal beats it for me in the gruesome factor, but yeah, this week's Game of Thrones was way, way up there.

As Daniel said, Hannibal has had some gruesome parts to it but I agree what happened on GoT in the latest episode was pretty horrifying. I really need to get around to reading the books.

Erin (ems84) | 9120 comments Anyone have any thoughts on last nights episode?

message 76: by Char (new)

Char | 17498 comments I liked it a lot, but to be honest, I was hoping for more of Tryion and his execution.

That said, I loved the depictions of the wilders coming in. The mammoths and the giants were super cool. The anchor things they slid along the wall were also very cool. What did you think?

message 77: by Erin (new)

Erin (ems84) | 9120 comments I liked it but I agree I wanted to see what was going on with Tyrion but I did know, going into the episode, that it was going to be all about the Night Watch. I was bracing myself, thinking there was going to be a shocking death, but I am going to guess they are saving that for the finale.

message 78: by Mark (new)

Mark Matthews (xmarkm) | 269 comments This episode was unique because it had a singular focus. I don't remember any episode done in this way. I sort of know what happens with Tyrion, but have not read the parts about the battle on the wall (the books are in a bit different order.) so I liked it this way. A touch contrived at the end,(no spoilers, but the death scene) but it was one of the only scenes where we get what we want and not what RR Martin makes us have, with the wonderful line that we (I) were all waiting for; "you know nothing Jon Snow."

Is there anyone in all seven kingdoms who have Jon Snows bravery, dedication, and self-lessness? I dont think so. He's not even motivated by love of others or family, just mostly a higher calling.

Jon Snow for president. (just so, when there's a debate, we can hear the other candidate say; "You know nothing Jon Snow")

Great observations, you two! I agree about Jon Snow, Mark. He is quite honorable despite being a bastard.

message 80: by Mark (new)

Mark Matthews (xmarkm) | 269 comments Just goes to show if you want something done right and with honor, best to pick a bastard. He's perhaps the exact opposite of Bastard Ramsay Snow.

message 81: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 417 comments I really liked this episode. I love Sam so much. The Wall has some of my favourite characters. It was a sad one though. I liked the Wildlings more in the books than on the show. They just seem so much more evil now.

message 82: by Hans (new)

Hans | 3 comments i have read all the books, and i understand everyone complaining there was nothing in the latest episode about Tyrion, but i need to point a few things out. If you were reading the books, the chapter where the red viper and the mountain fight ends pretty much the same way as the show, and then it is a cliffhanger of sorts, followed by the battle on the wall, while you cant wait to read what happens next to Tyrion, you have to read all this other stuff before you get to it. hundreds of pages. this is page turning writing at its best. in one of the books, Mr Martin ends a chapter with a HUGE cliffhanger regarding one of our favorite characters, only to write anything BUT that character for upwards of 600 pages!!!!in fact, one books has only one chapter about one character the entire book! waiting two weeks for the Tyrion story to continue doesnt seem so bad when considering the years people have waited for the next volume. and the story of the wall has to be told, i am so glad they did it the way they did. bringing back director Neil Marshall who also directed the battle of blackwater in season 2 to direct the first battle at the wall was inspired. the fourth season of GOT has been the best of the series so far, and it is only going to get better. i know what happens in episode ten. it is SO worth it! enjoy!

message 83: by Jon (new)

Jon | 59 comments I'm having mixed feelings about the show, despite the fact that I probably would have never read the books if I hadn't absolutely loved the first season so much that I simply had to find out what happened next. That first season captured the first book perfectly, I thought. However, the subsequent seasons have reworked and changed bits here and there - and not always for the better (in my opinion). I'm often left scratching my head at the changes, wondering why they chose to mess with my recollection of certain scenes and events, at which I'm like hang on, that didn't happen that way in the book ...did it? Or am I just misremembering? Damn it, I need to check I'm not going crazy! *grabs book and searches frantically for scene*

But my biggest fear is that the show is going to overtake the storyline in the books before Martin finishes writing them. What happens then? I know he's given the producers a plot outline for the last two books, but without the source material I think the show could deviate a little too wildly from Martin's original vision.

Pheww.. season 4 over.. that was some heavy amazing stuff, now I just have to age a year to see the next season, well at least I have book 4 to keep reading!

So, sooo good...

message 85: by Mark (new)

Mark Matthews (xmarkm) | 269 comments Love it as well. Last episode, to me, seemed to go beyond the book, where this one fell short. Jon Snow is the shit, that's for sure, and so is Arya. The Bran Stark storyline I find completely disinteresting. Interesting to see Daenerys unchain so many slaves, then chain up her loved ones.

I felt the same way about Bran's story line. My favorite part of the finale was what happened to Tyrion. I was definitely surprised with a couple of things that happened.

message 87: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 417 comments Bittersweet. I loved the finale but now I'm sad I have to wait another year. There were a few things I was disappointed by(where's the cliffhanger?), but I loved some of the changes. Brienne and The Hound was a great scene!! I love Arya and her next storyline is my favourite. Bring on season 5!

I was wondering about the end. I had read several articles that there was going to be a cliffhanger but after seeing the way it ended I personally did feel it really was one.

Mark Matthews (xmarkm) | 269 comments Brienne and The Hound was an awesome scene. (reminded me a bit of Roddy Piper's fight scene in "They Live"). Felt bad for Briene she didn't get her goods, but I do think Arya is the coolest cat around and needs to run free.

Yep, it seems like Arya wasn't ready to buy whatever Brienne was selling lol.. and I can't agree more about your comment on Dany chaining her babies/dragons while taking chains of others, I was more than misty eyed.

Personally, I think they messed up not ending the season the same way the book ends, with a big reveal/cliffhanger but I've got my hopes up that it will just be the beginning to the next season.

I take issue with your calling Arya a psychopath, she is just a victim of her circumstances. I mean really, if your mother, father, and brother were ALL murdered in spectacularly grotesque fashion, what kind of mental shape would you be in?

;)

K4tie (nonzombieleader) | 484 comments Arya kicks ass, she takes what she is given and keeps on rolling with the punches. If we lived back then I would much rather be seen as a self sufficient, or mostly, badass then a lost helpless creature like Sansa. Sansa has her purpose though. She helps us see how many females were forced to act and also gets to bring to light some of the psychological horrors being in her position can bring. For example Joffrey beating her naked in front of others, or showing her heads on a pike. If that isn't psychologically damaging to someone of her "sensibilities" then I don't know what is.

She saw her father be killed as well, right? Whew, I can't even imagine.
