Can a book be "original" if it's inspired by another book?

My book started as a re-telling of The Great Gatsby. But once I finished it, I realized I wrote a much more personal and original work than if I didn't have any "inspiration" at all.

Yes, I agree with you, Chris. A book inspired by another book certainly can be original. I also was inspired by an old great. In my case, the novel Jane Eyre turned into a novel "Jane Is Everywhere." The two books couldn't be more different, though there are overlapping themes. Interesting, isn't it?
