Shanna_redwind | 852 comments I read this book about 10 years ago, I think (give or take) I think my copy was new then, but I don't know if it was a reprint.

What I remember is that a bunch of prisoners (both male and female) get dropped off on planet. I think they agreed to this, but didn't really know what they were getting into, and I think the planet is pretty harsh. The main character may have been female, but not absolutly sure on that.

The prisoners come up with their own code of laws. (Possibly causing a splinter group?) The law says that if you see someone causing a crime and you don't do anything about it, you get the same punishment as the ones that actually did the crime.

That's all I can remember, other than they are travelling rather than staying in one spot. Also, they were allowed to bring one personal possesion, and the main character, or a very important one brought a book.

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments Heh, only quibble I've got with it is that the main character (guy) was mis-representing the laws if you read it carefully.

And it wasn't one item, it was a weight limit. Which the guy took advice from another old convict, who said that people addicted to reading would give anything to read - best drug there is.

Harshness was desert climate (which, in reality would've killed them off quite quickly, as it's more harsh than almost every desert on Earth (most of which are unsurvivable w/o water/oases and proper gear))

Btw, awesome catch - got it within the first viewing of this request. :) Go Team.
