Reading the comments on this book, I realized that Beatrix Potter used this idea in the Tale of Jemima Puddle Duck. Mr. Todd, the fox, smooth talks Jemima into picking just the right herbs for the dinner to which he invites her. Her rescuer is the farm terrier, if I recall correctly. Jemima never did catch on that she was to be the main course.
