I was getting kind of bored with this series however this book turned me around. I loved the storyline and thought that Kaylee was finally growing up. Can't wait for the next one!

I have to admit that I put this one off for a bit. I haven't really been into anything too dark and Jason and Mahiya's story sounded like it might be too much for me at the moment. But a couple of challenges pushed me to read it and, well, I really should have known to trust Nalini Singh. She's one of my favorite authors and does not disappoint here.
Her angel's live in a violent and political world. We know Jason as Raphael's spymaster and here his story is told. Without giving too much away, he has tragedy in the past but it's offset a bit by fond memories from before the tragedy. Because of what's happened he's shut himself off to most emotions but he's still able to read emotions and motivations and that makes him an excellent spymaster. By contrast Mahiya doesn't have many fond memories at all. But rather than shut herself off she's determined to live her life on her terms and not become like the ruthless beings she's grown up around. In lesser hands she may seem hopelessly naive but Nalini Singh makes her pragmatic and smart on the outside while keeping her plans to herself. Despite the violent events that bring them together theirs is a quite romance, as befits characters who keep so much to themselves. They woo each other and circle each other subtlety, small gestures have deeps meaning with these two.
We also get glimpses of Dimitri and Honor, Raphael and Elena and some knowledge about what may be going on with overall archangel storyline. But one thing Ms. Singh does wonderfully both here and in the Psy-Changeling series is to advance an overall plot arc in each book while maintaining the focus on the main couple's story. Honestly, from any other author this may be a 5* book but as much as I enjoyed Jason & Mahiya they don't compare with some of my favorite couples from the Psy-Chageling series.

For Dystopian I'll read

Finished: 7/11
Rating & Review: 3.75 stars
This is the final book in the Vampire Academy series. Heroine Rose Hathaway (note that my last book, On the Edge, featured Rose Draycourt, LMAO) was imprisioned for the murder of Queen Tatiana. Rose and her allies have to figure out who framed her and why because the Moroi are calling for her blood.
Then there is the matter of resolving her feelings for 1st love Dmitri and current boyfriend Adrian. Who is "the One"? This book answered all of that, but didn't answer all of my questions. Which is why it got a 3.75 instead of a 4-star rating

Thank you. I also read Spirit bound in the beginning. so two Vampire Academy books have been on my list.
I wonder what shelf we will get next! No one got bingo this week, right?

I love Twitter. If it weren’t for someone mentioning this book on Twitter, I might never have gone to Amazon to read the sample of this book. Without Twitter, I also probably wouldn’t have found out that the authors were giving away copies of Branded for review. Not that it would have mattered if I missed that part because I was about to buy the book anyway. Branded is one of those books that I can’t stop thinking about. I loved every single second of this book, even the ones that at the moment seemed like they were dragging things out. Everything worked so perfectly together and I am now a forever fan of this book, which I’m hoping is just the first of many in a series.
From the very beginning this book is freaking intense. It’s so dark and dismal and there are moments where you don’t think things will ever get better for Lexi. I had tears in my eyes a lot in this book, both sad ones and happy ones, which really surprised me. This is a roller coaster of downs and slight ups followed by huge downs and then some slightly bigger ups. I loved Lexi throughout. She was so strong no matter what kind of crap happened to her and there was a lot. And Cole and Zeus…absolute love; I want a giant dog and a hot guard in my life please. A couple things I kinda figured out or thought I figured out, but I always was waiting to find out something bad about one of the characters and it never happened, which in the end was a relief, but damn it if my heart wasn’t in my throat waiting for that shoe to drop.
I can’t recommend this book enough. I’m so in love with this that I want to yell it from the roof top that everyone should go buy this book while it’s $.99 because I have a feeling it won’t stay that way long. I would not be surprised if these ladies get picked up by a publisher. They deserve it. I can’t wait to read more from them and soon!

Here are some stats from the discussion thread...
Some stats:
18 shelves left
3 are winning shelves (freebie, keepers, maybe) 17% chance of one of these being called next week.
The 2 most popular shelves are urban fantasy and shifter- they each would help 8 teams get a 4-in-a-row.
Next is vampires at 6 teams, then reader's choice at 5.
The ONLY shelf that wouldn't give someone 4 in-a-row is ghosts and spirits.

It would give us 3 in a row (in two different angles).
but I see your point.
No Keepers!!

Shifters would work the same way, however it would also give 8 other teams 4 in a row. Lamesauce

Sometimes I want to tell a book "It's not you. It's me." and I felt like that reading this one. There's a lot to like here, it's an interesting world with it's new world order and devastated population. Chess is an interesting heroine, and if I was unsure at first about a drug addict narrator, I think Kane does a good job of letting us know the whys of Chess's addiction. Although she's got some strong powers in many ways Chess is one of the most vulnerable UF heroines I've read, which makes her world feel even more dangerous.
The issues I had are really just things that aren't my thing. I'm not the biggest fan of dystopian stories in general. Ironically they make me depressed about our current society. And I find that I put them down easily since I'm not actually anxious to spend more time in the world. But anyway, one could actually argue that Chess's life is better in this world anyway, given her past and her problems. Another personal bugaboo of mine is when the heroine is the only woman in the book. Every other character with more than a handful of lines is male. Again, it's just a thing that bugs me, if it's not a thing that bugs you then you probably wouldn't even notice it.
In short, the things that dragged this book down for me are very personal to me. I can definitely see how it would work for other people. The characters, plot and world were all interesting and engaging. Many times the first book in a series isn't my favorite (the first Kate Daniels for example) so I will give the second one a shot before I decide on the rest of the series.

I read it for a challenge but I now love this series.
I didn't like Kate Daniels until book 3 either(end of book 2 when Curran became an integral part).
For that reason, I try to read at least 2 books before I give up on a series.
I read ALL of Fever by Karen Marie Moning and still don't like that series at all. So it's possible to read 5 books and not like a series

Just a reminder, I might not be around when the shelf is posted today. Although that might be nap time for my nephew so hopefully it'll work out.

LMAO at our Bingo card.
Alien shelf suck

what does "misshelved" mean?
BTW, I am reading

does it matter if there were misshelved, as long as they are on the shelf:)
if you liked the Lux series (which we read over at PKC), then it is more of the same, but a little better since the character is older. they are less immature
