Week 6: dystopian: Plague Nation (Ashley Parker, #2) by Dana Fredsti
Finished: 10/7/13
Stars: 5
Review:
Wouldn't you know it? Sat up late last night to finish this because I just had to (come on - we've all done it!) and then got an early morning phone call to go to work for an extra shift....D'oh!
Anyway for an zombie fan out there this series is a must read! I love it!! It follows Ash and her teammates who are immune to the zombie bite as they try to find a cure with some interesting developments along the way....

Week: 6
Shelf: Dystopian
Read: 10/7/13
Rating: ★★★★★

I had a really hard time putting this book down, it was so good! The writing was beautiful and the story dealt with a lot of ethical questions and dilemmas.

As far as Sandman knows, he's the last human on earth, living alongside a new breed of humans that seem to be superior in all ways: they are beautiful and flawless, peaceful, have no understanding of certain emotions (eg jealousy...), don't understand the concepts of racism and violence etc, have no sexual urges and no understanding of art, technology or religion.
Over the course of the story Sandman remembers how the fall of humanity came about and what he had to do with it.
There is no neat ending, instead, a lot of questions are left open for the reader to ponder.

This wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't that great either.

The two female characters could have easily been one person. Bea is a bit pointless so far I think too. Quinn seems to be coming into himself nicely though.

The idea of the world isn't too far fetched, but everything just seems so simple. Kind of fluffy.

It was a super easy read, there just was something about it that fell kind of short for me.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

I didn't want to read this book. Dystopian isn't my favorite and I really wasn't in the mood for another YA novel. In the beginning you can see what's going to happen from a mile away. In the fog. At night.

The premise is that love is a disease and the cure is coming for our young leading lady just as her life is getting started.. She has spent her life trying to fit in to a life with seperation, no strong emotion and the promise of arranged marriage and a government selected job. Of course- she manages "catch the disease" and everthing starts to unravel.

However, I must admit to totally falling for this book. I became invested in the characters and it was vivid enough that i could remember feeling those "diseased" feelings for the first time. The changing relationship with her best friend really stood out for me. It felt very genuine.

It was shamefully DRAMATIC in a teenage way (a little corny) and the ending is one heck of a cliff hanger but thank goodness there is another one to read right away.

Kerstin | 862 comments That's a really good one, Sandra! One of my favourite series :)

message 263: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Yes, I'm enjoying it and it fits perfectly in Judith's Genre Monthly Challenge.

Finally a bingo book that fits another challenge. Usually I have no trouble doing that, but this round it is as rare as hen's teeth :)

message 264: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments I'm really bad with challenges this year. I've only joined a few yearly ones and have hardly done any monthlies. Not sure why that is, the last of couple of years I've been challenge crazy!

Lisa M (lisamarienicholas) | 192 comments I think that I will read Ultraviolet (Ultraviolet, #1) by R.J. Anderson or Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, #1) by Ann Aguirre or Alien Tango (Katherine "Kitty" Katt, #2) by Gini Koch

It will depend on which one I can borrow. I spent my monthly book allowance pretty fast.
It's only mid month!

I'm leaning toward ultraviolet because the reviews are so good but I just said I've had it up to my ears with the YA novels.

Jax just cannot take a trick. Promoted to "Ambassador" and sent to Vel's homeworld to broker a treaty with the xenophobic "bugs" (view spoiler)

So, she's biting her tongue, hoping not to stuff up and start a war, whilst trying to cope with Marsh's coldness. He's suffering PTSD after fighting a genocidal war on Lachion. But at least he's turned up just like he promised.

With all the action happening on Ithiss-Tor, this could of been a bit boring but AA has created a fascinating culture and people. We learn all kinds of things that all add to the menace of an insect-like people that think pinkies are weak and puny.

Meanwhile, in the rest of the universe, the Syndicate is gaining ground through good PR and nasty pirates and the Morgut are eating a few too many people in far out space-stations and ships. And the Conglomerate (ie the new political dudes) are losing ground.

Really enjoying this series.

Shelf: Aliens
Finished: 7/17/13
5 stars!

I don't usually read books that involve aliens, so I was a little hesitant about reading one. However, I am glad I did. I absolutely loved this book. It kept me reading, I didn't want to put it down. I had to see where everything was going. It had action, romance, mystery...plot twists (though you could kind of see them coming). It was a fantastic read. I am kind of sorry it is over now.

Kerstin | 862 comments Old Man's War by John Scalzi
Shelf: Aliens
Read: 19/7/13
Rating: ★★★

John Perry celebrates his 75th birthday by joining the army, not just any army, but the Colonial Defense Forces. The CDF is always in need of new (or more accurately, old) recruits to help their colonization efforts in space. Rumor has it that once the recruits have left Earth, the CDF is rejuvenating their bodies, though everyone is unclear how that feat could possibly be accomplished.

This was quite a quick read, but I have to say I didn't really connect with any of the characters. They were just not fleshed out enough for me and when some of them started dying, I didn't care all that much. The first part of the book was dedicated to preparing the new soldiers for their life in the CDF and after that we got to read about a few space battles. There was one scene that looked like it was going to be slightly more interesting, by introducing a character that actually questioned the CDF's methods and I was expecting morality issues etc to be discussed. That scene ended up very short and got the questioning character killed pretty quickly(to be fair it was his own fault). The plot line concerning John's 'wife' was finally something that really had me interested, but unfortunately not all that much time was spent on it, which I thought unfortunate.
There were some funny moments in this book, and it was a quick read but I'm not sure if I'll go with the series.

I don't believe that I confirmed that I am reading Ultraviolet (Ultraviolet, #1) by R.J. Anderson

It's a little whackadoo but good. I'll be done tonight.

I'm a bit behind because I've been cheating on you.. I can't put down the downside ghost books. Oh, Chess, what a flawed and real character you are. Just messing up all over the place! Also, making me talk all crazy and it's driving my husband nuts.

Belinda, glad you are ok.

I avoided this series because people commented on it being sort of depressing and all the drug use. I can't believe how much I like it! I find myself lauging quite a bit and the drug use is sort of compelling. I like that it isn't glorified but real and gritty. I'm so bummed that I've finished all of them. Have you read her other demon series?

Revised figures: 7 pages; 323 books

As you can see, the actual shelf is much smaller than it originally appears, so we have a second shelf for you as well. A book from either of these shelves can be used for the 'paranormal mix' shelf!

paranormal mix or paranormals

I really enjoyed this book. Our Heroine finds her self in a desperate situation. She believes that she has violently murdered. The point of view gives you a glimpse of what it might be like to be mentally ill . The setting inside a mental hospital feels very real. I appreciated every detail and feeling.

This book seriously had a bit of everything: sci-fi twist, romance, mystery, drama and it was a bit of a thriller.

What really fascinated me and inticed me to pick this book was the descriptions of synesthesia. I had no idea what it was. I think that I might have enjoyed this book a bit more if I had not known what to expect from the shelf listing. I was waiting the whole time for the twist at the end. Nevertheless..This book was original and a real pleasure to read.

Kitty annoys me - really, REALLY annoys me! she somehow seems to forget she's hot, or doesn;t actually realise...howwever all the boys in her team and complete strangers swoon over her whilst she's getting ready to marry martini and checking out all the other hot guys.....hmmmmm.....not what you should be doing while planning a wedding....
there were a couple of funny moments that saved this book and some of the other characters were entertaining. i'm in two minds whether to continue on with this series and my husband adores this series.
