Week 1: Assassins
Book:Shadow Kin by M.J.Scott
Read: 7/6/13
Rating: ★★★★
Review:
This story was set in an interesting new world, inhabited by humans, fae and vampires. Lily is a Wraith, half fae and unsure where the other half comes from. She is viewed as an abomination by the fae and was sold to Lucius, a Blood Lord, right after birth. He basically enslaved her and raised her to be his assassin. When she is sent to kill Simon, a human sunmage, things don't go as planned. Lily has to decide if she wants to return to her old life with Lucius, keep on living in fear and do his bidding, or if she wants to change her life by helping Simon bring the Blood Lord down.
I enjoyed this rather dark story and liked Lily's character, though she made me really sad at times. Her life so far has been filled with abuse, and she's ashamed of her past and mistrusts Simon and his good intentions.
Simon has his own demons in his past but when he finds out certain things about Lily and treats her exactly as she had feared, I have to say that I started to dislike him for a while.
The flow of the story could have been a little better, as it slowed down quite a bit towards the middle.
The narration was something else I had to get used to. The story was told by two first-person-narrators. Little sun and moon symbols made it easy enough to follow who was talking, but it took me a while to warm up to the style.
All up it was an enjoyable first-in-series book and I'll be reading #2.

i'm working tomorrow morning so i won't be around for the shelf announcement :(

Week 1: Assassins
Book:The Mage in Black
Date Read: 6-5-2013
Rating: ★★★
This was the second book in Sabina Kane Series. Sabina finds herself leaving LA with Adam to head to New York to meet her long-lost twin sister and learn how to use her mage magic. It’s a bit of a fish out of water story. Sabina finds that she can’t just slash and bluster her way thru her problems as she normally does. Her journey finds her having to compromise everything she knows and believes in. She has surrounded herself with strangers during a very dangerous time. She is learning to rely on others, to trust, and to forgive and forget but – she’s not doing a very good job of it.
Sabina reminds me a bit of Kim Harrison’s character of Rachel from the Hollows Series. She just seems to make one bad decision after the next in her personal life. Her instinct, brains and heart don’t seem to see things eye to eye. All her flaws and her inability to trust and to embrace the changes that are clearly happening to her expectations of others make her likeable.
I have to say that a much as I enjoyed it..I totally figured out who done it early on. With that being said there are still a lot of little mysteries, great supporting characters and a love triangle that will bring me back to this series to read the next installment.

You just need to add the date you read Mage in Black.

i'll be reading

Yeah, that's why I thought it understandable that so many were YA.
Me, not so much a fan of YA. Though there are some series I read, like Mythos Academy, alas I'm up to date otherwise it would be an easy pick.

Sorry on my phone so I can't link.

Shelf: Assassins
Finished 6/9/13
4 stars
I enjoyed this book. It was a nice, easy read. It kept you going. The story was well told. My biggest complaint was the budding of emotions between Duval and Ismae. That felt a bit forced to me.

Shatter Me - the good guy you love, and the bad guy you love too. It is dystopian meets X-men. I really liked it, and the second book is really good!
The Fault in Our Stars - it will make you laugh, then it will make you cry...and you will see it coming from a mile away and still not be able to stop yourself. This is one of my most favorite books.
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer - this one...so good. It is hard to explain it without giving too much of the story. She has PTSD, but she also seems to have other powers going on. It is hard to tell what is real and what isn't. This one is also up there on my favorites list. I want the third out so badly!

Kristin, I've marked your other books to read. I actually was looking at The unbecoming of Mara Dyer before I asked but the reviews were all over the place on that one. Shamefully, I was attracted to the cover.

I'll be reading

Lisa, no shame in being attracted by a pretty cover. I've bought a couple of books purely because they looked pretty...some of them ended up being really good, others, well, not so much ;)

I'm now ready to pick my book. So I'll take a couple for a trial run and see how I go :)

My review is posted, it is just shorter than everyone elses. I tend to only have a lot to say if I either hate the book or I really love it. It is in message 77.

I love food & wine festivals, sounds like a great day out.
Yay, our first stamp!

You now have an updated BINGO card with a stamp on 'assassins'.

Good Job!! :D

Week 2: Book Boyfriends
Book:Sins & Needles by Karina Halle
Read: 11/6/13
Rating: ★★★★★
Review:
Another Karina Halle book that I just couldn't put down. I just had to know what happened next, and pretty much read it in one sitting.
Ellie and Camden aren't the nicest characters, but I adored them anyway. They are both flawed, with questionable morals and both of them have made some rather despicable decisions in their life. Yet, you can see where they are coming from and that they only try to survive the cards they've been dealt. When the two of them are together, there's a lot of chemistry and the sparks are flying.
Ellie, a life long con artist, is despite the choices she's made, a sympathetic character that I felt and ached for.
Camden, a hot and sexy tattoo artist, with his own dark past had me guessing his motives for big chunks of the book.
The book was written in a 'then and now' style, which was really well done. It was interesting to slowly find out what happened in the past to drive both of them to the point at which we meet them.
Great characters, great story, can't wait for the next instalment!

Shelf 2: Book Boyfriends
11/6/13 ★★★★
I enjoyed Valiant & Tammy's story. Though I thought the editing could of been better.
The whole premise of animal DNA being mixed with human and experimented on by mad scientists is lifted directly from Lora Leigh's Breed series. And I must admit that I enjoy them both. Though I'd have to say LL's series is better and the original.
Alpha males, undying love what's not to like ;)

Welcome! :) WTG, Assassins!

I have that TBR, Kerstin. Glad to hear it's just as addictive and a good read.
