I FOUND IT! the first book was The Baker's Boy, and the second was A Cavern of Black Ice! thanks for nothing fools!
Congrats! I was just going to suggest some books, all of them wrong, when I saw your comment. You might want to put this in the "solved" box. :)
there are two books i think in particular that most of my memories come from, one i remember much more from than the other.
first book:
short details first: it had magic, some kind of magic that leaves like a metallic taste in your mouth. it had a male protagonist who starts out young and ages throughout the book, ending with him dying (i think) in some sort of a magical explosion. that's pretty much it for small things i can remember.
-there is a young man who is hired as a transcriber type person for a _______ (some kind of advisor to the king i think) in a random castle somewhere. he learns how to read what he's scribing eventually (a bad thing) and realizes he's been writing some pretty crazy (maybe magical?) stuff.
-he escapes, learns how to use a knife/sword from a guy who sells flour cut with wood shavings and is an assassin in his spare time.
-all this ends with him sacrificing himself (i think - my memory is so fuzzy) in some some sort of a magical battle that ends with the bad guy almost dying and him completely dying.
i should point out that the magic in this series is pretty subtle, and hard to describe. it's no "abra-cadabra", more like super concentration to try and control it like a muscle. its almost described as a physical force.
the second book: i remember much better (if the two books are in fact related at all)
-there is a clan/tribe of people, and the main character is a young hunter who uses a bow. i think the book starts with him out on a hunting trip, and he learns there that he can "call" to the heart of the animal he's trying to shoot and then he'll kind of lock onto it and never miss (always shooting it through the heart).
-some of the world lore - there are different tribes, and the one that the protagonist belongs to once stole some massive monument (rock?) from another tribe and dumped it in a lake - not particularly important but any detail might help
-there is somewhat of a "bad guy" - someone who is keeping a magical person in their dungeon and somehow using him to be in control of his kingdom. i also remember something about this guy collecting the magic with flies or something.
-the tribesmen protagonist eventually is forced out of his tribe (i cant remember why) and ends up with a group of people who are all "not whole" and before he can live with them he must cut off his pinky finger so that they do not rip off his arm or something.
-at some point, mr. protagonist gets in a shooting contest sort of thing with a local archer, who shoots a dead pig with ten arrows (shooting all ten arrows before the first one hit the pig). protagonist then tries to use his "call the heart" method on the dead pig and gets this weird "black" sensation.
