Katie Suttles | 2 comments Okay, I'm a new libraian, and I was working on making sure all my books are here on goodreads. A lot of my books are manga, and the original Japanese versions. As I was adding a series I noticed that it and all the different language editions (English, Japanese... I think I saw a German one too) were in the same series. Instead of just being able to add the entire series I would have to go through and make sure of which edition I am adding to my bookshelf.

My questions is this, do we have to put all the edtions of each volume of a series in the same series? For example the series I was working with was Meitantei Conan (Dectective Conan) It is in the series labled Cased Closed which is the title of the English version of the manga. Is it possible (or are we allowed) to seperate the different language editions into seperate series while maintaining the alternate edition links. So that there would be a series for Cased Closed which would contain all the volumes for the English version of the manga, but also a series for Meitantei Conan, which would include all the volumes for the Japaense version, and then any other series for other langauges?

ALL Edition of ONE volume are combined. I don't really understand the question I guess, but do not separate editions. When adding a book to series you will see only ONE option: the most popular cover of the book or the default edition of it (which is set by the author).

I think you can make as much series as you want, BUT! ALL THE series will be visible in ALL the editions!

So it is pointless because the series link goes to each edition of the book that is in this series, so an English book will an English name series, Japanese name series and German name series and so on and so on!

What yo can do is you can add the series info TO the edition title in the original language. Example:

Book title in Japanese (series name in Japanese, #N)

but link to : English name series (if that is the primary and only series with this book)

I'm not sure if that was clear enough and I would wait for someone else to give better advice.

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments It is Goodreads policy to combine all editions and translations of one book together.

Series are a work setting - meaning that a series applies to all the editions that are combined together. When you view a series page, the edition that shows is the most popular edition from the work which is why the languages may be mixed up.

Let's say in a series you have this:

Volume 1 English (20 Adds), Volume 1 German (10 Adds), Volume 1 Japanese (1 Add)

Volume 2 English (10 Adds), Volume 2 German (20 Adds), Volume 2 Japanese (1 Add)

Volume 3 English (1 Add), Volume 3 German (10 Adds), Volume 3 Japanese (20 Adds)

When you look at this series page it will show:
Volume 1 English
Volume 2 German
Volume 3 Japanese

since each of those are the most popular in the work. Even if you made a series for each language, each series would show the same editions because you are using the same works.

Unless the numbering of a series has changed, we create one series and list additional translations of the title in the description of the series.
