How much inspiration do you need to write?

I think there is a part of me that is always writing, fiddling with characters, voices, words, story lines. I get a glimpse of it, then a longer look at it, and then I'm abducted by it until I do it's bidding. I don't try to control it or figure it out. I try to be a good victim. It's the times in between, when I'm "safe at home" that I wonder about. Just what is it I'm doing here?
