What Are You Reading Now? Pt 2.

If you want to read a writer who is probably better at descriptive writing try reading Edgar Allen Poe, known as the Gran Father of Modern Horror.
The Last Mile by David Baldacci. It's the first thing I've read by him. It's pretty good, too.

If I never get another chance I'll never forgive myself for not paying more attention.

Very interested to see your review of Norse Mythology!
I would love to re-read the Handmaid's Tale. I'm going to try this year. It was required reading in high school, but I find that I appreciate books now more for their structure of words than I used to, instead of just the story. I want to re-read everything I read back then in case I didn't appreciate it as much as I might now.
If you're interested, apparently the Handmaid's Tale has recently been made as a tv show. I don't know how many episodes have been released or the network, but someone mentioned watching it last week and it seemed like it had just started.

Oh, I agree! Poe is brilliant and certainly one of the greats at descriptive writing.

I read it's already been renewed for a second season.

I want to make it through the reading (listening that is read by Claire Danes) before I start watching. I knew absolutely nothing about his book when I started it. Just saw that it was the # 1 paperback fiction best-seller in S.F.

I've been thinking of reading the book too before watching season one. I'd get it from my local library or anyone who has a copy in the library's network. Now that the series is out everyone wants to read the book or so it seems as the book seems to be checked out everywhere I look.

It's also an excellent audio book. It doesn't have a ton of dialogue which makes the best audiobooks for me. There are articles and histories as well which make for great listening as opposed ot just a story.

You sold me on it. I'll look for the audiobook :)

I loved getting the extra background and origin stories of all the characters. It was the 30yr anniversary edition, so it had a new forward and the 25yr forward also. It was an interesting way of making the book. I thought it was funny that he made his fictional self rather unlikable.
He gets extra points for the fictional Stephen King cameo!

I have an excerpt from Buttercup's Baby that I got by emailing the publisher. If you want it, I could email it to you. Just PM me.

I'll have to look into both, thanks.

Claire Danes reads The Handmaid's Tale and she does a fantastic job... (I'm half way through). There's a pretty strong dramatic performance called for, and she is totally up to the task.

Claire Danes has the kind of voice I could listen to for a long time. Thanks for the recommendation!

I'm very much looking forward to re-reading it soon!

(But then, everything Stephen King writes is enjoyable. Even when something painful/awful happens, he can still make it enjoyable because it's better written than something happy anyone else could have written.)

I just checked and it is not lendable. I do see $0.00 Prime and the words "included with prime membership." Has anyone with a kindle and a Prime membership checked if they can borrow it through the kindle owner's lending library?
Erin, if you prefer paper books and not ebooks, do you have a used bookstore you can check? I buy a lot of used books at Half Priced Books and Goodwill and through Amazon.

I really liked Misery. One of my favorites.

It's been about 5 years since I read it and I didn't realize how much I forgot.
Me and my son are also watching the series as we read it. It is pretty good so far.

I am so envious. That is my favorite book. I have read it three times.

Now I'm reading Life of Pi. I never saw the movie (I'll wait forever to see a movie if I think it looks interesting but know there's a book I could read first!)
I'm only somewhere like 50-60 pages in and I love it. Everything is described so vibrantly and the choice to write in a candid first person is really enjoyable, especially with the Indian culture that seeps through! I'm really looking forward to continuing.

Now I'm reading The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and I am glad to be back with the King! No one writes like him.
