Cody Vaters | 118 comments Currently reading The World of Ice and Fire, by George R R Martin... Best Christmas gift EVER :) Pretty long read, as the text is small, and it's put together as a kind of history textbook.

message 2352: by Glen (new)

Glen | 229 comments Cody I got that for Christmas too. It's a beautiful book with tons of history but as you say it will take a while to wrap it up. Besides I get distracted by the images too and waste time looking at those pretty often. That's the comic book geek in me.

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments As if I wasn't already reading 3 books, I started Richard Powers' Gold Bug Variations. 40 pages in its absolutley brilliant.

Andrea Leoni | 180 comments I'm up to a slow reading start this year. I just finished The revolution was televised by Alan Sepinwall and I'm about to get back to Eye of the dragon by King and to begin Butcher's Crossing by John Williams

Kandice | 4387 comments I think The Eyes of the Dragon is such an incredibly sweet book and have always wondered how it never got the graphic novel treatment so many of his have. The visuals would be stunning. GN would be infinitely better than a movie.

E. | 242 comments NICK ! I just finished A Dirty Job on audiobook and it made me think of you. If you liked Anansi Boys, you will totally like this! It's Anansi Boys meets Talisman, meets... I don't know what, but I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone.
I'm sure the printed book is great, but this story was perfect for audio. Crazy funny fantasy, wonderfully written and enthusiastically narrated.
A Dirty Job (Grim Reaper, #1) by Christopher Moore

E. | 242 comments I also just started Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by the same author, Christopher Moore, on the recommendation of TheLongWait and I'm pretty excited about it.

so far I'm still in the first part of the book, getting to know Flagg and Roland (seems strange saying so). But yes, I imagine it a colorful place..

Doreen Petersen | 252 comments Just started a classic, The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle by Tobias Smollet. It's a little different but not bad at all. Figured I'd try something a little different from my usual genres and am pleasantly surprised.

I read it quite a while ago... when it first came out I guess. I've read a lot of Moore, but I've never tried his audio. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll give it a shot.

I liked The Troop, but didn't quite love it. There were a lot of things about it that I thought worked and some that didn't. Nonetheless, based on The Troop, I was really looking forward to this. (I was number one on hold for it at the library.) This has nothing that worked about The Troop, plus all of its problems and then some.

It's next on my reading list, although I have to say, when you finish one Tom Robbins novel you really feel at a loss and want to start another immediately.

So, the real question here Michael, is why did you take the time to finish the book? When I commit to reading a book and announce it on goodreads I feel compelled to finish it. But I think that's wrong. Too little time to be wasting my readings on junk. (Please note, if you're currently reading one of MY books, please ignore that last comment. Of course, I hope I'm not writing junk, but King probably had the same feeling when he wrote Desperation.)

I kept reading for a number of reasons. As a horror writer myself, I feel it's important to know what is selling, current, popular, etc.

I also kept reading because I was getting madder and madder at the book the more I read. It was like being in a bad relationship and I wanted to catalog all of my grievances so that when we split up (or wrote my review), I could demonstrate just how bad the relationship had been!

Sort of a combination of revenge and community service. :-) Makes sense. Thanks.

I hate to think of it as revenge, especially since I've been on the bad end of reviews. But that's life as an author. When I give a big chunk of my free time over to a writer and then end up feeling like they haven't taken me seriously as a writer, then I get pretty upset. So yeah, I guess revenge!

And I didn't even get to all of the annoying writing things Cutter does in this book. He's in love with trying to capture the "sounds" of things. Instead of just writing, "It slithered down the corridor" we get, "It slithered down the corridor going splttttiiieee..." or some such nonsense over and over. I could go on, but I won't!

message 2395: by Nick (last edited Jan 23, 2015 01:11PM) (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments See, that quote right there about the sound of slithering is reason enough not to read that book. Community service. thank you very much. I'm downloading the audio of Weaveworld, and hoping it's good. Weaveworld by Clive Barker

BTW, sure notice differing opinions on this one by some of my respected friends. We'll see.
