E. | 242 comments When I finished the Green Mile (which was aces ) I tried to start a lighter read by a different author, but that lasted about 30 pages. I guess I just need the beasties and ghosties.
I picked up Lisey's Story and never looked back. It was a little hard to keep up with at times, switching past-present-further past, especially near the end, but I really dug it.
Creepy but heartbreaking.
The "lighter read" this time is Cold Fire by Koontz.

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Reading Great Jones Street by DeLillo, which is about a rock star who quits mid-tour. Also, just started Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem, which is great and still working on Gravity's Rainbow.

message 2011: by Jeff (new)

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Jessica...
I have read Infinite Jest and now am in Gravity's Rainbow, so I am holding off on Finnegan's Wake for a while. I also have The Beautiful and Damned on my shelf. Let me know how it is.

I will, so far I am really enjoying it! Thanks for the sugestion, I think I will do that. Finnegan's Wake seems pretty daunting, definitely want to break myself in!

Malina | 304 comments Just started Boy's Life Boy's Life by Robert McCammon , I have immensely enjoyed everything I've read from him so far, I'm sure this will be great.

Thompson is great, have you read anything by Hubert Selby Jr.? May not lighten things up, but a great writer!

I have heard great things. Where should I start with Selby?

message 2019: by Jeff (new)

Jeff (thelongwait) | 293 comments Decided to wait on the Rum Diary and start Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins....should be good as I loved his other book I read called Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates.

I started with Requiem for a Dream, the writing style takes some getting used to but it's worth it. Last Exit to Brooklyn is another well known one by him, but I just ordered a few other ones by him that I hadn't heard of. I'll keep you posted, but I'm sure they'll be just as good as the others!

message 2021: by Tom (new)

Tom | 78 comments Skinny Legs and All and The Rum Diary aare awesome. My favorite Robbins is Jitterbug Perfume. I have some Hubert Selby Jr. I haven't read yet. Thnaks for the reminders!

message 2022: by E. (new)

E. | 242 comments Malina, I recently read A Boy's Life and it became one of my all time favorites. It has all the elements I like in a book, humor, depth, creepiness, well developed characters, mystery, pretty good ending (often the latter being hard to find). I hope you are liking it.
After finishing the Green Mile, I read Lisey's Story then Joyland. I really liked them both. A lot. I'm now in the middle of Rose Madder.

I've been looking around for a new audio book and liked the idea of skinny legs and all, but unfortunately no audio version. I settled on Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. You're recommendations have been right on Longwait, so I'll take your word on Tom Robbins. Also reading the New John Locke novel THIS MEANS WAR. That's a very guilty pleasure.

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments So now I'm well into Even Cowgirl's Get the Blues and it's like sticking a shovel into the earth and unexpectedly coming up with a pile of gold. Who knew this guy was so clever? Well, I guess everyone but me. Thanks for this thread and the introduction to Robbins. I only wish he had more books available on audio. My reading time is mostly still spent reading scripts for the local film festival. Gone through 22 so far and more are coming.

Kandice | 4387 comments Shadow and Bone for a Buddy Read. I love when a book never even blips on your radar, but a friend recommends it and it turns out to be a great read. Best part of GR in my opinion.

E. | 242 comments Just finished Rose Madder. I really liked it up until the end. I may go back and read the last part again, but I didn't quite grasp the seeds, the tree....
About halfway through Revival, up next is A Prayer For Owen Meany.

Susan (edgarsden) | 88 comments After finishing The Tommyknockers few days ago, I decided I needed a little break from The King, but because I didnt get the book I planned to read... I obviously ended up with good, old Stephen King.
The Dark Half. I am so hooked. So far is just PERFECT. Great balance between real and supernatural. I can't wait to finish it, and I really hope the ending's going to be good as well.

message 2047: by stansult (new)

stansult Just finished Wizard and Glass, and kinda started The Wind Through the Keyhole… but it feels a bit off — not the story, but emotionally. Will make some pause maybe, or will go on with Wolves of the Calla instead, will see. For now got back to Roadwork that was lying down forgotten, almost not started for quite a while.
