When I finished the Green Mile (which was aces ) I tried to start a lighter read by a different author, but that lasted about 30 pages. I guess I just need the beasties and ghosties. I picked up Lisey's Story and never looked back. It was a little hard to keep up with at times, switching past-present-further past, especially near the end, but I really dug it.
Creepy but heartbreaking.
The "lighter read" this time is Cold Fire by Koontz.
Reading Great Jones Street by DeLillo, which is about a rock star who quits mid-tour. Also, just started Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem, which is great and still working on Gravity's Rainbow.
Plan to read Joyland first, then Revival right behind it. Just finished Lisey's Story. It turned out to be a favorite.
TheLongWait wrote: "96 pages into Gravity's Rainbow and it is as difficult and crazy as advertised...." I've been wanting to check that out! Has anyone given Finnegan's Wake a shot?
Jessica...I have read Infinite Jest and now am in Gravity's Rainbow, so I am holding off on Finnegan's Wake for a while. I also have The Beautiful and Damned on my shelf. Let me know how it is.
TheLongWait wrote: "And I would read V by Pynchon first...its shorter and a bit easier to follow."
I will, so far I am really enjoying it! Thanks for the sugestion, I think I will do that. Finnegan's Wake seems pretty daunting, definitely want to break myself in!

Just started Boy's Life
, I have immensely enjoyed everything I've read from him so far, I'm sure this will be great.
Still working on Gravity's Rainbow and Fortress of Solitude. May start the Rum Diary by the good doctor to lighten things up a bit.

Thompson is great, have you read anything by Hubert Selby Jr.? May not lighten things up, but a great writer!

Decided to wait on the Rum Diary and start Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins....should be good as I loved his other book I read called Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates.

I have heard great things. Where should I start with Selby?"
I started with Requiem for a Dream, the writing style takes some getting used to but it's worth it. Last Exit to Brooklyn is another well known one by him, but I just ordered a few other ones by him that I hadn't heard of. I'll keep you posted, but I'm sure they'll be just as good as the others!

Skinny Legs and All and The Rum Diary aare awesome. My favorite Robbins is Jitterbug Perfume. I have some Hubert Selby Jr. I haven't read yet. Thnaks for the reminders!
Malina, I recently read A Boy's Life and it became one of my all time favorites. It has all the elements I like in a book, humor, depth, creepiness, well developed characters, mystery, pretty good ending (often the latter being hard to find). I hope you are liking it. After finishing the Green Mile, I read Lisey's Story then Joyland. I really liked them both. A lot. I'm now in the middle of Rose Madder.
Jessica.... thanks for the recs!!Tom....I do love the Good Doctor, and have fallen off reading Tom Robbins.
Too many at the moment, but I did get Mr. Mercedes from the library this morning. Can't wait to get to that! :)

I settled on Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. You're recommendations have been right on Longwait, so I'll take your word on Tom Robbins. Also reading the New John Locke novel THIS MEANS WAR. That's a very guilty pleasure.
Ok Tom and Jessica....picked up Jitterbug Perfume and Requiem for a Dream today, along with The Corrections (which I read digitally already and loved) for $10 today. Love used bookstores! Look forward to reading them....at some point.

What a bargain! Hope you enjoy them, I look forward to hearing what you think of Selby!

So now I'm well into Even Cowgirl's Get the Blues and it's like sticking a shovel into the earth and unexpectedly coming up with a pile of gold. Who knew this guy was so clever? Well, I guess everyone but me. Thanks for this thread and the introduction to Robbins. I only wish he had more books available on audio. My reading time is mostly still spent reading scripts for the local film festival. Gone through 22 so far and more are coming.
TheLongWait wrote: "Glad to hear Nick. Try Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates. It was my intro to Robbins."I love that book so much! :)
TheLongWait wrote: "Switters is an all time favorite character of mine!"Same here! I still like to put people into two categories...cowboys and angels. :)

I'm finally near the end of IT and it's giving me sleepless night's, I woke up at 5 am dreaming that all my Facebook friends were trying to help kill IT
Shadow and Bone for a Buddy Read. I love when a book never even blips on your radar, but a friend recommends it and it turns out to be a great read. Best part of GR in my opinion.
Just finished Rose Madder. I really liked it up until the end. I may go back and read the last part again, but I didn't quite grasp the seeds, the tree....About halfway through Revival, up next is A Prayer For Owen Meany.
Cell. I love end of the world stories. This is an interesting book, with characters on a trek that follows the one in The Long Walk, only in reverse. Lot of fun.
After finishing The Tommyknockers few days ago, I decided I needed a little break from The King, but because I didnt get the book I planned to read... I obviously ended up with good, old Stephen King. The Dark Half. I am so hooked. So far is just PERFECT. Great balance between real and supernatural. I can't wait to finish it, and I really hope the ending's going to be good as well.
I watched What's Eating Gilbert Grape with my teenagers over the Thanksgiving break and am now reading it. I forgot how much I loved this book.
Just finished Wizard and Glass, and kinda started The Wind Through the Keyhole… but it feels a bit off — not the story, but emotionally. Will make some pause maybe, or will go on with Wolves of the Calla instead, will see. For now got back to Roadwork that was lying down forgotten, almost not started for quite a while.
Just finished Fortress of Solitude and LOVED it! Working on Skinny Legs and All and Gravity's Rainbow.
On to a thriller now, the book of you by claire kendal and its really good so far, you can't beat a good stalker story
I just started Inherent Vice because I learned they are making it into a film. I always like to read the book first!
