I've read Interview quite a few times, even into adulthood, but not the sequels. I need to revisit The Witching Hour and give it the same chance.

I'm really enjoying it so far! I loved The Witching Hour! It was the first Anne Rice book I ever read and actually I read the ebook on my phone. All 1200 pages! I enjoyed Lasher too although not quite as much as The Witching Hour. I'm excited to be finishing the trilogy and will definitely be sharing the link for my review of it.

I agree about some of the subject matter being off-putting, especially in the second book. I try not to let it slow me down though. I tend to just power through so I can find out what's going to happen next.

I think it would hold up well. I've not read any of her vampire books. Maybe I'll be able to get to them someday. There's just so many....
Hi Derrick
I have The Witching Hour and Mummy didn’t read yet.

I have The Witching Hour and not sure when I’ll get to it. It has such tiny print that’s hard on my eyes…I see AMC is making a series out of that too, called Mayfair Witches. I haven’t read all of Rice’s vampire books because I find the number of them daunting. And what I read was years ago and in the “wrong” order. :(

I read this book because I liked the movie, a good one with a classical fantasy plot and a main character, Ken Marshall, that I remember for the series about "Marco Polo", that I watched when was a child.

I think because Rice was an established best-selling author with a strong fan base, she was able to get by with some of the off putting material like incest and border line pedophilia in The Mayfair Witches, but I bet a first time author today with a book contract with a major publisher would have some strong push back from an editor if they had similar material in their novel. Same for King's infamous "problem scene" in the sewers near the end of IT.

@Derrick wow can't imagine trying to read that on my phone, lol, challenging enough old school paperback. I agree with your comment about the subject matter being off putting. I think that was definitely an issue for me and why Taltos is the only one of the three that didn't give me that cringe vibe. The constant family history was also a bit much, would have been better had she put a chart or write up at the back that readers could refer, guessing that would have cut the first book down by at least 200 or more pages.
@F.C. I had the same thought when I read The Witching Hour for the second time a few months ago. The first time I didn't read the next 2 novels in the series as I figured would just be more of the same. Taltos was interesting and explained more about Lasher than the first 2 books.

Guessing it will be somewhat toned down from the books. But as I type this thinking of The Game of Thrones so maybe not. I watched a few episodes, but not my cup of tea.
@Derrick I just read Interview with a Vampire for a second time. May read the rest of the series as I only got to book 4 last time. I won't be buying the series, as thankfully my public library has all but one of the books. Lestat is an interesting character.
Kandice wrote: "Derrick wrote: "Taltos by Anne Rice"I remember being so incredibly enthralled with this series when I was young. I want to revisit, but am afraid it will lose the cha..."
@Kandice Hi. Interview with a Vampire was good. The series now has I think 12 books, I got up to book 4 the last time I read them. The other books are equally interesting as you learn more about Lestat and The Talamasca. Aaron Lightner, the character from The Mayfair Witches, also comes up throughout the Vampire series.
Elaine Online wrote: "Erin wrote: "Wise Cat wrote: "I have The Witching Hour and not sure when I’ll get to it. AMC is not HBO, and they'll probably do to witches what they did to Interview With the Vampire and make changes that they think will make it acceptable to "modern audiences" even though the books were written in the 1990s not the 1890s.
I can’t imagine reading on a phone. It’s tiny and the battery isn’t robust. I had a hard time finding this thread again even though it notified me of new posts. As far as watching a series before reading the book or books, for me it depends on what it is.
They just made 7 episodes of Interview with the Vampire but it was better than the 94 movie. It allowed for character development and the story is too complex to cram into a typical 2 hour movie.😒

Well I'm able to make the font as big as I need. Also, I always buy the phone with the super long battery life. It's all a non-factor now because I've since bought a tablet and I do all my e-reading on that.
@F.C. will be interesting to hear what others think. I rarely watch T.V., not into paying for several streaming channels, and to me an 8 episode "series" isn't worth my time, especially when so few series now last more than a year or two. Main reason I have returned to books. Books are free from the library and I have a number at home that have been patiently waiting to either be read for the first time or reread. Happy that after years of not using Goodreads, I have found some great groups and now before purchasing a book I can see what a number of others have thought. I also like to see and check out a book in a store, like my reading, I am definitely old school book in hand.
Elaine thanks for posting you’re old school like me. Printed books don’t have issues like slow loading, battery life or compatibility.I never knew of phones with long battery life but I couldn’t afford it anyway I bet.
I might start Eric Clapton’s autobiography Clapton soon.

Yesterday, unsure what to read, I started Dark Hunt. I don't know the author and I don't read many novels of this kind (Urban Fantasy with magic, demons and angels), but I was attracted by the plot. So far, it's good.

I rarely watch new shows, lol, 8 episodes to me isn't a series and I lose interest before the next season begins. Part of the reason I got back into reading this year. No monthly fees, free at the library. Started watching Wheel of Time back in Jan - decided to give the books a try and ended up reading the entire 14 books series - enjoyed much more than the show. I am curious how they will present this on TV/stream as some of the content can be triggering for some. Not a series I found to be an easy read.

I actually really enjoy the new shorter seasons of shows. Eight or ten episodes seem perfect. A movie is often too short for an adaptation, or to tell a grander story with care, but these short seasons are perfect. I also find that with shorter seasons there's more of an arc with each. Yes, there is the overall plot, but also each season seems a little more contained, which makes it easier to wait the year or more for the next, and easier to keep track of what's happened.
Elaine Online wrote: "Erin wrote: "Elaine Online wrote: "Erin wrote: "Wise Cat wrote: "I have The Witching Hour and not sure when I’ll get to it. It has such tiny print that’s hard on my eyes…I see AMC is making a serie..."I agree with Kandice on this, I prefer a much short season versus the ones that span 15 + episodes. Sometimes I feel like shows can get a bit lost in the story when they have to fill that many episodes. If they can tell a story in a shortish season, I'm for it.
For me it's the big break in between the new episodes. By the time it comes back tend to forget where the series ended. Sometimes shows get lost in the story, depending on the type comedy, mystery etc. But a longer season also allows for more character development and growth, depending on the writing. Of course this thread is now making me think about book length. I enjoyed reading Wells, Wyndham and Verne this past year - all shorter stories with a lot of interest, adventure and character development. Some of the larger books I read were, well larger but just droned on and on with filler instead of story.
I've finished reading Taltos by Anne Rice. I enjoyed it! Here's the link to my spoiler free review. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Derrick wrote: "I've finished reading Taltos by Anne Rice. I enjoyed it! Here's the link to my spoiler free review. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show..."Glad you liked it. Of the three in the series it is one that I did enjoy as it finally answered the questions about Taltos.
I just started The Talisman and plan to follow with Black House. Next in line is a non- King book - Code Breaker.
Finishing 2 books atm… Hearts in Atlantis & Sense & Sensibility. I have been sick for the last couple weeks so I had to stop for a bit. Hoping to have them both finished this week so I can start new reads soon!
