Sounds similar to Midnight Library by Matt Haig, where one has multiple versions of oneself in many universes simultaneously. The caveat is you can only take that version's place when you're between life and death.

It just blew me away, I swear. :-) I'd like to be another version of myself in a much better life and world, especially these days.......

message 9140: by Joan (new)

Joan | 39 comments I suffered through The Midnight Library unlike all the high praise it seems to get from others. I thought the alternate realities would be something along the lines of Stephen King's portals into other worlds but it wasn't like that at all. I found the book preachy and pretentious and not at all what I expected. It was a suicide attempt followed by the individual hovering between life and death and imagining what other choices could have been made that would have led to perhaps a happier life. Each "reality" proves to be impossible and in the end the decision has to be made whether the life you have lived is worth continuing and working to make things better. Sorry but this book was just not my cup of tea and I'd be surprised if other King fans would find it anything like their usual reading material. This was more of a self-help book than a mystery or suspense novel.

I loved The Fireman too. Not sure how far you are, but when I attended a book signing for this, Joe and his sons passed out little kazoos and we all played a song from the book. It was a hoot!

Spoilers for Keli and anyone else looking to read this. ;-) ;-)

Different strokes for different folks, as the saying goes.

Though I like King, I read a lot of other books that are not like his worlds. Maybe you thought it was going to be like The Dark Tower in some ways? Anyway I thought this topic is for any non-King book one is reading, not just books that aren't written by him but still resemble his writing. :-)

Does that mean it's for books that resemble his style or genre only? Want to be sure I didn't misunderstand. :-) Like if I'm reading a YA fantasy for example, which I will soon. Meaning "un-Stephen King like". :-)
