Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments I just finished a re-read of Boy Snow Bird and posted a second review, except I couldn't figure out how to do that, so I just added it as a very long comment. I updated my rating from 4 to 5 stars.

Helen Oyeyemi does that to you, doesn't she? I think I almost love reading her stuff a second time more than the first time. Part of it is the way she doesn't-quite-explain what's going on but allows her reader to supply details and figure things out. Things that didn't quite make sense the first time through have a very satisfying way of falling into place better the second time through.

I've not read Boy Snow Bird yet, but I've read Mr. Fox, White is for Witching, and The Opposite House plus a few of the stories in What's Not Yours is Not Yours. I think she's a wonder, actually, although there's no question that she can be challenging to read (because she does indeed challenge us, literally). I believe that in many cases, people who don't like her are just not in the mood to expend the effort her work requires, and richly rewards.

Thanks for the comment. I agree. She is a little bit of work, but her writing is so good that it's a pleasure to read. I would highly recommend Boy, Snow, Bird. And based on your comments I'll grab one of her others. Maybe white is for witching. It seems to fit with my own interests... maybe.

Thanks, I started the audiobook and then switched to a straight read from a paperback. Great in either version.

Never seen the movie. I didn’t know there was one. It’s interesting so far.

I've been thinking about revisiting Interview with a Vampire now that I'm old enough to get all the subtext. Has her writing aged well?

message 6374: by Nick (new)

Nick Iuppa | 4272 comments Can't comment on aging... but I really enjoyed the book when I read it... both times. Very impressive.

message 6375: by [deleted user] (new)

Summer, I’m enjoying TQotD more than I did IwtV, which I read a few weeks ago. Personally, I think Rice improved over the years.

Also reading The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown (The only other Brown book I’ve read is The Davinci Code and this one is a really fun read) opted to skip the previous two as I watched the movies and enjoyed them.

A few days ago, my husband, daughter, and I were out shopping. She passed out in her car seat, so my husband went into Lowe's and I stayed in the car. He was in there 30!!!! minutes. And of course, my daughter stayed asleep, and I DIDN'T BRING MY BOOK!!! Talk about BORED! I was so mad! I could have read so much in that 30 minutes! haha!

message 6400: by Brax (new)

Brax Henley (cheds) That’s the worst! My husband always double checks that I have my book before we leave. I have horrible car anxiety and reading in the car distracts me.
