Erin (jadegl) | 4 comments I am reading Mysteries and Legends of New England: True Stories of the Unsolved and Unexplained by Diana Ross McCain. It's not what I expected. I was looking for more urban legend/spooky stuff, and I am not getting a lot of that yet. The best thing in it, so far, is the chapter on premature burials,

message 5354: by Aditya (new)

Aditya Finished Under the Dome by Stephen King, an old fashioned King epic and a fast read for a book of over 1000 pages. Rating - 4/5

Michele (spookybookshelfie) | 116 comments I am stuck in Cassandra Clare's shadowhunter world... I had high expectations for her books since they are quite popular in the booktube community but I just... I think they are quite mediocre .. so I'm trying hard to finish City of Ashes

Alondra Miller Just starting Sleeping Giants and it is all that and a bag of chips! :)

message 5359: by Aditya (new)

Aditya Finished City of Endless Night City of Endless Night (Pendergast, #17) by Douglas Preston , fun and fast but forgettable and formulaic. Rating - 3/5. That statement sums up almost the entire Pendergrast series, however they are still entertaining enough for me to keep coming back for more.

I loved TWttK; a story within a story within a fable within a tale... I think. LOL

message 5375: by Aditya (new)

Aditya Sabine You are in for a great treat, LA Quartet is one of the best crime series of all time, great characters, unique staccato writing and a plot that is as twisted as it gets. Hope you enjoy it.

message 5376: by Aditya (new)

Aditya Finished In the Electric Mist With Confederate Dead by James Lee Burke, another great addition to the Robicheaux series. The best writing in the series so far, but a paranormal subplot feels out of place in a novel as gritty as this one and brings down the rating a notch. Rating - 4/5.

I agree Aditya - the LA Quartet is fantastic! I'm reading them a bit out of order - I started with LA Confidential, then The Black Dahlia and now The Big Nowhere. I'm new to Ellroy, but so far I think he is amazing!

message 5380: by Aditya (last edited Feb 07, 2018 09:10AM) (new)

Aditya The Black Dahlia has only a tangential connection to the rest but the other three are better read in order; specially White Jazz which is almost a direct sequel to LA Confidential. It is probably the bleakest and most claustrophobic, the staccato is so pronounced that it almost feels like that there are editing mistakes. It's still damn great though.

Lauren | 6 comments I just finished Blasphemy by Douglas Preston. If you’re looking for a novel that has government, scientific, and religious aspects colliding, I suggest giving this a shot. There are a few horribly constructed sentences, but I think almost every book has at least one. It’s worth trying out in my opinion!

message 5395: by Aditya (new)

Aditya Finished Strange Weather by Joe Hill, some nice ideas but inconsistent execution. The standout was the last novella Rain. Nowhere close to being as good as his father but then it is a large ask of anyone to have Stephen King as his benchmark. Rating - 3/5.

The hardest thing Joe Hill has to do is live up to his fathers abilities. He used his middle name so he wouldn't be judged as his fathers son but on his own merit. I feel he is an excellent author in his own rights, I refuse to judge him against his father as they are two different people.

message 5399: by Aditya (new)

Aditya I agree with what you say about giving him the same leeway that one would give any other author. I gave him the same but comparisons are bound to happen, it is something he can play down but don't think he can ever escape a shadow as large as his father's. On the plus side there is no doubting he got a built in reader base because of the same connection. Not saying people will read him simply because of his father but just implying if there is a choice between a couple of authors, he might benefit from the first vote of confidence. Most authors would like to have that sort of a selling point even if the flipside of it is harsh comparisons.
