No worries Melissa :)

@Logan

55. me either. I think her name was mentioned in passing, but there is alot of detail in the book!

56. Lol. Indeed!

59. How cool will that time period be?! I hope they spend some good time there in the next book. Have you read any of Ian Mortimer's time travel books? I loved his Medieval one and this is next on my list The Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England by Ian Mortimer

60. Didn't even think of that. Matthew will protect them ;)

61. agree

63. Good analogy about Diana's emotions!

65. yay

~Melissa~ June 11 - Chapters 8-12

9. First I have to say the fact that he brought her to a class that was full on non humans... I thought that was kind of crappy. Not as if she could have gone anywhere if she didn't want to be there as she was stuck since he drove.
Anyway back to the original question - I think she needed to hear this. She is a witch and pretending she is not isn't going to make it go away.

10. Not sure if this is going to be important or not. Wondering if the author just wants to be "now" if that makes sense.

11. I must have missed where Matthew referred to them as being alive so I can't really answer this. However, after Gillian dropped her bomb on Diane I was totally surprised that her first thought was to call Matthew and not call her Aunt to question her about what she knew about it. This really bothered me. It seems that if this had happened you would want to contact family first to get their thoughts not someone who you are "trying" to stay away from at this point.

12. I had three thoughts - 1) it is a new vampire that is unable to control himself 2) a vampire that has no care whether he is found or not 3) witches are doing it to draw attention to vampires and make them look bad - this is the one I'm leaning towards especially after what Gillian says about Diane's parents.

13. I think with making Matthew as old as he is the author needed to put some real life history in there. I will say I'm not a history buff so for me - these facts could all be incorrect and I wouldn't know the difference.

14. So vampires are omnivorous and like wine. Is it just me or did they drink three bottles of wine at dinner and still manage to stand up and have an adult conversation?! :)
I have to say I would have been on the floor, definitely not making sense and probably would have fallen asleep from that much - I'm a cheap date - one to two drink max :)

15. How do you feel about the blossoming romance between Diana and Matthew? I'm enjoying it so far. Waiting for her aunt to have kitties though. I keep thinking the aunt at some point is going to show up on her doorstep, lol.

@Melissa
9. That is true. She had no means of escape

11. You'd think that wouldn't you? Her trust in Matthew seems to come around very quickly

12. nice theories!

14. Haha

15. yes, I wonder if that is one reason for her being portrayed as in her 30s. If this was a true YA book and she was under 18, you would absolutely expect the aunts to be knocking down her door!

~Melissa~ chapter 13-17

16) I think she wanted to show Matthew that she trusted him with her blood. Wanting to know about her genetics may have been part of it as well.

17) I think if you've been around as long as Matthew has you probably have acquired a large number of things. Matthew seems to like good wine and would know about it as it was being made so I'm not surprised he has so much. Now I'm not a huge wine drinker but the people who owned our house before us had a wine cellar that was packed and then still had the floor covered with boxes that were full of bottles of wine as well. Now we definitely don't have that many wine bottles but if you were to count my books that I own between laptop, ereaders and paperbacks it would be a very large number, lol.
Not really sure if wine is important to the book or not.
18) I'm liking how their relationship is developing. He takes special care of her and ensures that she starts to come to grips with her power.
19) I think with any type of power any of us have comes a great responsibility. You have to be willing to accept that responsibility. Not sure I would truly want that.
20)Not sure what happened to the manuscript. That was kind of odd. My thought was that as it is a special object maybe it can tell when it is ok to "come out if hiding" for lack of a better phrase. I have to say that other than Diana's family I don't like any of the other witches that we have met. Peter Knox is at the top of the list - I get the feeling he is truly evil. Especially after finding out that her father didn't trust him at all.
21) whoever sent it wants to scare her which it did. Although I'm not sure they realized she would be taken away to France - may have been a miscalculation.
22) for me personally I like learning about Matthew's past and I really like Marcus' personality but I wish it would be told a little quicker...without so much description. That could just be me though.
23) not sure she is harboring secrets since she doesn't really know anything...about her parents...about how to do magic...about the fact that she has actually been using magic without her own knowledge.
24)I was happy that we finally got to hear Diana speak with her aunts and get their take on what has been happening.

~Melissa~ Chapters 18-22

Not alot of action in this section, but we get to meet Ysabeau and Marthe and explore that amazing home! I was wondering about Marthe... she remains a servant and her hands are described as old and wrinkled. I wonder why someone would want to live forever as an aged servant. I hope we get to find out more about her. First impressions of this very unusual family?
I loved Marthe - so warm(for a vampire), nice and welcoming which was the exact opposite of Ysabeau - must say I didn't like her at all during the meet and greet.

I am finding Diana more and more childlike, and Matthew is taking on a parental role with her (telling her she has to eat before going to sleep, buying her clothes, dictating when she is to wear them etc.). Have your impressions of either of these characters changed? I think Matthew is very used to being in charge...whether in the lab, with friends or at his house. As for Diana I felt like she needed direction during this time so she could figure out what to do with her abilities- whatever that choice may be and Matthew didn't want anything else to interfere. She also needed to concentrate on her speech.

I googled Occitan and it is a romance language spoken in southern France. Do you think they speak in this language out of habit, or in order to preclude Diana from certain conversations? I felt like it was a little bit of both. Ysabeau I felt did it on purpose to exclude her.

The description of the library was amazing. If you had access to something like that, what book would you love to see? Personally I'd love to see original manuscripts of some of my favourite books from Tolstoy or the Bronte sisters. I would love to see the originals from the Bronte sisters also. I would also like to see Shakespeare's original works.

Ysabeau (pronounced ee zah BOH) seems to be warming to Diana and at one point during the dance scene says to Matthew "be careful with her". Was that just a warning about their dancing or something more? I felt it was both the fact that she was human and also what may happen if they were together.

There have been a few references to a literary Queen Diana, and then in the manuscript Diana reads we get a bit of detail about the Moon Queen and the Sun King. I can't help but wonder if this is all connected somehow with Diana and Matthew. Do you get the feeling they have a spiritual/past world/supernatural connection? it seemed to be talking about both of them. It made me feel as this is how things were supposed to be. Almost like foretold.

I had a bit of a laugh at the almost sex scene recalling Kristin's comment about if it would be possible for Diana to set Matthew alight accidentally! Are you (still) enjoying the romance angle? Would you like to see them stay together? I want them to stay together. It would be funny if she lit him on fire ~ lol.

Domenico's introduction reminded me a bit of Twilight when Edward tries to protect Bella from other vampires (just from the movie, I have never actually read the books). What are your thoughts on this scene and Matthew's quick get-away? He keeps saying Diana has "a lot to learn about vampires". I think we do too! He totally gave me the creeps. No need for someone to tell me he is evil. Yikes!

@Melissa
17. I love our wine cellar, but I really want Matthew's!! :)
20. yes, no nice witches yet. all those memories of Bewitched are out the window ;)
22. I think we are all experiencing Matthew through Diana's eyes which means that it is very slow and secretive. I wonder if she will feel the same about him if he wasn't as ellusive?

I really like Marthe too... and I think we were all eagerly awaiting Matthew being alight! lol!

~Melissa~ Chapters 23-29

Wow! In this section we discovered what witchwater is. Water was expelled from all over her body. What are your thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages to this power? Does she have to be in a sad state and able to cry to use this power?
I found this to be interesting but scary as well. Seems she could *accidentally* drown herself and others with her feelings. I was assuming that if she had better control over her abilities it probably wouldn't have been as bad as it was.

At the end of Chapter 16 Matthew is staring at the print of The Goddess of the Hunt and reciting a poem. When Ysabeau and Diana go out to ride, Ysabeau allows Diana to watch her hunt and kill. During this excursion Ysabeau calls Diana "the goddess of the hunt" Is there some kind of connection or hint of something we are yet to understand or find out about Diana? Not sure about that but Ysabeau gave me the creeps all during this ride. Not sure I would have been able to hold my ground the way Diana did during this. Gotta give her kudos for not running away *screaming*.

What are your thoughts and feelings about Matthews past(being married,a father, how he became a vampire)? It made him appear more human that he had found love and had a child. However I felt Ysabeau told her to be cruel. Hoping that Diana would stop loving Matthew.

While Matthew was gone Diana went snooping through his desk. She found some things that she probably shouldn't have been messing with. What do you think Matthew's reactions will be to her when he finds out? Should she have been snooping? not easy to answer as we know that Matthew himself has kept secrets from her. He will probably be upset however, he should wonder if she;ll be upset with everything he has held back from her.

Diana talked Matthew in to letting her go hunting with him. After the hunt, with blood still present around his mouth, he kissed her. What were your reactions to this? uh...yuck! ok now that that is done. I think it was written this way to let Diana know that even with blood still around him and her he could remain in control of himself

Matthew warned Diana to be careful of his mother. Why? She doesn't trust witches at all. Matthew I didn't think was all that sure of his mother but there was nothing else he could do.

Diana and Matthew are now pronounced husband and wife(in a sense). I thought at this point we were going to finally see the "Sparks Fly" but instead we got bundling LOL Were you disappointed and what do you think about this? This cracked me up. However, Matthew is from a different era so not that surprising he's not just going to *jump* in.

Under vampire terms they are officially married. What happens if one or the other changes their mind? Is there a vampire divorce? I think you better be really sure of what you want. Do you really want to try to leave an immortal and live?!?

I wondered what kind of child they would have but we learned that they can't have children the "traditional" way. Diana seems to be ok with this as their children can be "made". Do you think she will ever regret not bearing children? Will she become a vampire so that she can live as long as Matthew and the made children if there are any? I felt like she really hadn't thought this through. We never really got a sense of what she wanted out of life prior to this. I was wondering if she would ask to be turned into a vampire.

Diana has been captured and we meet Satu. We have also learned that Gillian is dead. What did you think about this chapter and what do you think will happen next? Will she escape on her own using her powers or will Matthew come to the rescue and save her? Again Matthew has kept secrets from Diana - granted not a lot of time together before she was taken. Not sure she can get away as she doesn't know how to use her powers really. I felt bad for Diana. Matthew must have been going out of his mind.

~Melissa~ Chapters 30-35

We meet a new member of Matthew's family with the introduction of Baldwin. I was surprised to learn Matthew wasn't the head of the family. What did you think of Baldwin?
I was surprised that Matthew wasn't the head of the family too ~ although it makes sense later. I didn't like Baldwin at all - reminds me of the siblings who always felt the world would have been better if they were an only child - how could their parents not see that.

Now it starts to make sense why Diana's magic has only just started to seep out of her. She has been spellbound! Do you think this was fair/right of her parents to do to her? I got the sense that this was the only way her parents felt she would be safe. Not sure if it was fair but it did keep her safe all these years.

When Satu took Diana she claimed that Matthew gave her his blood to kind of bind her to him. Do you think it is true? We know she spoke to truth about Matthew killing Gillian. No

What is the significance of Marthes tea? She made Diana promise to have one cup per day and her aunts claimed it may have been a type of contraception. But why do you need that with a vampire? Why would Marthe forsee this was needed? I was wondering about that ~ that was kind of odd that she had to promise to take it everyday. Of if only Marthe knew that Matthew hasn't touched her that way,lol

Matthew has seven letters sent to the Knights of Lazarus. we know two (Baldwin and Marcus). Any ideas on who the remaining five could be? Will they all be vampires? I could only think of Miriam and Hamish for another 2. We know little of who Matthew keeps close.

Baldwin provides a warning that the witches purposefully let Diana go (as a gambit). Do you agree? I did think it was easy for her to get away with them once they arrived. I was expecting a bit of a battle.

I loved the Bishop house! All the ghosts, the house having a personality and the cat named Tabitha (why is that always a name in wicth stories?!). What were your impressions of the home? I thought it was hilarious that the cat hates Diana but loves Matthew, lol. What a cool house but not so good for having friends over ~ would be kind of creepy when the house shoots things out of a room because someone needs it.

Diana's father is a timewalker (and so is Diana!). Do you think we may meet her father in the future? That would be cool if they could meet. It was neat to see them come hlep Diana when she was captured by Satu.

So we discover that Matthew and Diana are connected somehow to the manuscript. Three missing pages and three types of creatures. Theories/predictions for how that page came to the Bishops and where the other pages are? I was thinking somehow her parents sent it to the house or her dad did during one of his timewalking episodes.

Conceptico! Ahh! What a shocking place to end this sections reading! Does that mean Diana and Matthew will have a baby??!! Oh that birth control tea wasn't such a stretch after all, lol. This definitely is some foreshadowing that they might have a child. Not sure how that would work as I thought in most books vampires were sterile?!?!?

message 160: by ~Melissa~ (last edited Jun 23, 2013 06:59PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

~Melissa~ Chapters 36-43

Marthe's tea ended up being a contraception of sorts. Everyone seemed to be upset about this.Marthe obviously knows something and was helping out in her own mysterious way. Matthew also instructed Diana to take normal birth control. Why is everyone upset about Marhte's tea? Do you think everything will change later in regards to contraception? What are your thoughts.
I think it was the fact that Diana and Matthew were in the dark as to what she was actually drinking. I'd say Matthew definitely doesn't want kids but it appears that Diana would be open to them.

We were briefly told about Juliette earlier in the story. Did you think that she would impose as a threat and try to take Matthew's life? What did you think about her and her wicked ways? I didn't even remember her from earlier in the book. Wow she was a total loon ~ how the hell did Matthew fall in love with that????

Go Diana Go!!!!! Wow what a switch. Instead of being protected she suddenly became the protector. What awesome powers. What did you think about this scene and her reactions? That was awesome!! Totally cool when a chick can kick ass.

The question was asked in another section about ghosts. Well,at least we know that Diana can see them and the vampires can feel their presence. I just love Grandma. What are your thoughts about the ghosts and the house in this story? I would think it would be comforting if this is how you grew up - knowing you could still see your ancestors and converse with them at times. How awesome would that be.

Ok...this is getting interesting. We have 3 witches and 3 vampires that have joined forces. Now all of a sudden we have 3 daemons one of which we already met,Hamish. What did you think about Sophie and Nathaniel and their story? Kept waiting for when Hamish was going to show up. We found out in the beginning how important he is to Matthew and then .....nothing. I thought he would have shown up before the other two. I really liked Sophie. Jury still out on Nathaniel so far.

Time travel...who would have thought. Do you think this is a wise and safe decision? There are so many variables for this to come off without a hitch - kind of wigs me out.

Awwwww!!!! How sweet.Did you like the little ceremony with the ring which made Diana and Matthew married in the eyes of the vampires as well as church law? SO sweet11

Although we know this book is the first of a trilogy the ending was a cliffhanger. Were you disappointed in the ending? Would you have rather it ended in some other way so that the book could have been a stand alone? with all the paranormal I read I can't get upset with a cliffhanger. Hey I read KMM's Fever series, those cliffhangers were terrible.

Will you continue on with the nex t book? What do you think will happen in the next book? I will continue

Whewwww!!! This book was long. Is there anything you would have changed about it? Shorten it?Less descriptive?Different writing style? I felt like there was a lot of description that could have been taken out but that may just be me. I like more action - took a while to get to the action part.

64.What is your rating for this book 4♥

Thanks ladies!!

Marla | 1804 comments Thank you Karen and come on LK you know you want to come play...

1. Is the book so far what you expected? Do you like the writing style?

I like the writing style. I don't mind things being written in 1st and 3rd person and to be honest, I usually get caught up in the story and don't even notice the switch.

2. It seems Diana is a reluctant witch. I found it odd that she wanted to remain untrained. It seems dangerous somehow. Do you agree?

I can totally understand Diana's rejection of magic since she thinks it caused her parents' death. It also sort of reminds me of the teenage proclivity to reject anything from our parents or a scientist's rejection of religion. She's a scholar who avoids magic. I think it will turn out to be dangerous if she is as powerful as her genes indicate and based on her unknowingly "leaking" magic.

3. This first section introduces daemons, witches and vampires as living amongst humans. Given the choice, what would you prefer to be?

LOVE the concept of daemons, witches and vampires living among us. I would think a witch is closest to being human so that is my pick.

4. Do you think it will be significant that Diana's finding of the manuscript coincided with Mabon? (FYI - this is a pagan festival that starts on the autumnal equinox more info here )

Yes, I'm sure Diana accessing the manuscript and Mabon are significant, but does that mean that she will have to wait until the next festival if she wants to reopen the book?

5. So it seems that Diana doesn't understand her own powers or how it 'seeps' out of her as light in her dreams. There have been quite a few descriptions already about smells, sounds, feelings, light. What do you think will be the meaning of the scent of cloves that she couldn't shake when she woke up?

Oh...Matthew was there in her apartment. I missed that when I was reading.

6. Interesting that she has sort of allied herself with a vampire and the Wizard in the library seemed to be threatening her. Do you think she should heed what her Aunty taught her about the 'heirachy' of creatures and stay away from Matthew and Agatha? Would you trust them?

Her aunt sounds very prejudiced and it sounds like staying away from other creatures would be wise, but Diana seems sort of reckless to me in her attempts to being open-minded, so I'm sure she will not stay away from Matthew.

7. I loved her reaction to Matthew when she told him to call her by her first name and how he sensed it. Can you imagine being friends with a being that could sense you like that?

Diana seems very perceptive to what people are feeling also, so they might be a good match. I think I always wanted a man who would sense what I wanted and needed, so it could be interesting. Of course, often we imagine we want something when we actually dislike the reality.

8. The humour started towards the end of this set of reading (Diana being called "tasty" and Matthew thinking it was a threat!). Also the promise of a vampire at a yoga class! Do you think it is really a yoga class or something else?

Can't wait to hear about yoga class. Matthew seems very protective, I wonder if this means that Diana is going to require lots of protecting.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Karen’s Questions and Lisa Kay’s Answers for Chapters 1-7

1. Is the book so far what you expected? Do you like the writing style?
No, this book wasn’t anything like what I expected. I really went into the first time I listened to it with skepticism. Also, I couldn’t get into reading it the first couple times I tried; however, the audiobook grabbed me and wouldn’t let good. I just loved it. This might have something to do with me being such a moody reader. However, I think it is really due to Jennifer Ikeda’s fabulous narration. And that doesn’t really take off until all the international characters enter the story.

2. It seems Diana is a reluctant witch. I found it odd that she wanted to remain untrained. It seems dangerous somehow. Do you agree?
I do think it is a bit dangerous; nevertheless, I respect that she wants her accomplishments ‘untainted’ and on her own merit.

3. This first section introduces daemons, witches and vampires as living amongst humans. Given the choice, what would you prefer to be?
A witch. I’m not interested in being a vamp and deamons? Eep!

4. Do you think it will be significant that Diana's finding of the manuscript coincided with Mabon? (FYI - this is a pagan festival that starts on the autumnal equinox more info here )
When I first listened to this book, I didn’t even consider that.

5. So it seems that Diana doesn't understand her own powers or how it 'seeps' out of her as light in her dreams. There have been quite a few descriptions already about smells, sounds, feelings, light. What do you think will be the meaning of the scent of cloves that she couldn't shake when she woke up?
I didn’t know what the cloves could mean.

6. Interesting that she has sort of allied herself with a vampire and the Wizard in the library seemed to be threatening her. Do you think she should heed what her Aunty taught her about the 'heirachy' of creatures and stay away from Matthew and Agatha? Would you trust them?
I don’t think Matthew will leave her alone. I’ll stay mum about Agatha. However, I usually don’t try anyone. ☺

7. I loved her reaction to Matthew when she told him to call her by her first name and how he sensed it. Can you imagine being friends with a being that could sense you like that?
LOL! No.

8. The humour started towards the end of this set of reading (Diana being called "tasty" and Matthew thinking it was a threat!). Also the promise of a vampire at a yoga class! Do you think it is really a yoga class or something else?
Yes, I enjoy the subtle humor in this book. I thought it was a real yoga class, only because I read a synopsis about him being a yoga performing vampire.

#1 – Yes, I thought it flowed easily between the two.

#2 – I agree. Her parents’ death would have left a big impression in her life.

#7 – Oh, man-oh-man! A man like that would come in very handy. ☺

#8 – Love Matthew’s protectiveness

Jackie | 2143 comments Glad to see you're joining us, Lisa Kay!
I started this book a couple of months ago, read part, and set it aside. So it's been a while since I read these chapters.

1. Is the book so far what you expected? Do you like the writing style?

I'm not sure what I expected but no, it isn't. I didn't mind the writing style but the book just seemed to move so slowly for me.

2. It seems Diana is a reluctant witch. I found it odd that she wanted to remain untrained. It seems dangerous somehow. Do you agree?

I can understand her reluctance because of the way her parents died. However, I don't believe it's possible to ignore something that is so much a part of who she is. Definitely I think it's dangerous to ignore and I'm surprised that she was able to do so for so long.

3. This first section introduces daemons, witches and vampires as living amongst humans. Given the choice, what would you prefer to be?

A witch definitely.

4. Do you think it will be significant that Diana's finding of the manuscript coincided with Mabon? (FYI - this is a pagan festival that starts on the autumnal equinox more info here )

I didn't even catch that, but yes, it probably is significant.

5. So it seems that Diana doesn't understand her own powers or how it 'seeps' out of her as light in her dreams. There have been quite a few descriptions already about smells, sounds, feelings, light. What do you think will be the meaning of the scent of cloves that she couldn't shake when she woke up?

I believe that the scent of cloves was due to Matthew's presence while she slept.

6. Interesting that she has sort of allied herself with a vampire and the Wizard in the library seemed to be threatening her. Do you think she should heed what her Aunty taught her about the 'heirachy' of creatures and stay away from Matthew and Agatha? Would you trust them?

I believe it would be wise to stay away but I don't think Diana could stay away from Matthew if she tried.

7. I loved her reaction to Matthew when she told him to call her by her first name and how he sensed it. Can you imagine being friends with a being that could sense you like that?

It would be interesting, but I'm not sure I'd like it. It feels almost like an invasion of privacy.

8. The humour started towards the end of this set of reading (Diana being called "tasty" and Matthew thinking it was a threat!). Also the promise of a vampire at a yoga class! Do you think it is really a yoga class or something else?

Yes, I believe it is a yoga class. The humor is very subtle but adds an interesting dimension to the book since it seems fairly dark to me.

Thanks! Glad I’m here. I did the same thing with this book. But, the third time was the charm. Turned out to be one of my favs for that year.

#1 – It is slow, but I pick up more things on a second read/listen. (I’m doing half and half.)

#2 – Good point. Must have taken a lot of willpower to refrain. I think I would have had difficulty.

#7 – Ah. Yes, it is that.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments From BBC Arts, painting by Peter Lely - actually named "Anne Hyde (1637–1671), Duchess of York, First Wife of James VII and II" - maybe Mathew's sister Louisa? LOL!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Karen’s Questions and Lisa Kay’s Answers for Chapters 8-12

9. So it really was a yoga class! Mathew served a few home truths to Diana after the class. What did you think of this scene?
I really enjoyed the scene. I like that Diana was open minded about being around other paranormals.

10. Hamish seems like a good character. I found it interesting that the author has introduced two characters in homosexual relationships (Hamish and Diana's aunt). Do you think there is any significance to this?
**shrugs** Maybe to the author, but not to the novel, per se. The author could be comparing the differences in sexual preferences to the difference in paranormals prejudice to one another.

11. Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense, but then later Diana recalls seeing the photos of them dead and Gillian claims witches killed them. Who/what do you believe?

12. The Westminster murders are mentioned twice in passing, and then a little more in the meeting with Peter Knox. He claims vampires killed humans, but we also know from earlier conversations with Matthew and Hamish that vampires are a dying species. It seems to me that experienced vampires wouldn't make such a pubic killing. Thoughts?
Good point; I would think they would maintain a low profile. I don’t trust Peter Knox.

13. There are quite a few references to Salem which made me look at The Crucible a bit more (cast of characters are here). Gillian claims that Diana's mother is the descendent of a prominent witch who "started" the Salem witch hunt (Bridget Bishop). How do you feel about how the book is trying to weave in real-world events?
I love this part of it, felt that all the Revolutionary War stuff gave it a nice historical feel.

14. So vampires are omnivorous and like wine. Is it just me or did they drink three bottles of wine at dinner and still manage to stand up and have an adult conversation?! :)
LOL! Yes, handy trick, that.

15. How do you feel about the blossoming romance between Diana and Matthew?
I like it. Especially knowing that he is really enthralled with her, and not just Ashmole 782.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments From Wiki:

Côte-Rôtie is a French wine Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in the northern Rhône wine region of France. The vineyards are located just south of Vienne in the communes of Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhône, Ampuis, and Tupin-et-Semons. The vineyards are unique because of the steep slopes facing the river and their stone walls. Côte-Rôtie can be rendered in English as "the roasted slope" and refers to the long hours of sunlight that these steep slopes receive.

The wines are red, made with Syrah grapes and up to 20% Viognier, a white grape used for its aroma. According to appellation rules, Syrah and Viognier must be fermented at the same time, a process known as cofermentation. Côte-Rôtie wine typically exhibits an almost paradoxical combination of meat aromas (including bacon) and floral aromas. However, even Côte-Rôtie from 100% Syrah can smell floral.

Location of the Côte-Rôtie AOC among the major in wine regions of the Northern Rhône.

The earliest record of viticulture in the region dates to the 2nd century BC when the Romans first encountered the Allobroges tribe whose territory included the regions around Vienne.

Syrah vine.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Matthew believes he was born around the time Clovis converted to Christianity.

From Wiki: Clovis (French pronunciation: [klɔ.vis]; c. 466 – 511), or Chlodowech (German Chlodwig, Latin Chlodovechus), was the first king of the Franks to unite all of the Frankish tribes under one ruler, changing the form of leadership from a group of royal chieftains to rule by a single king and ensuring that the kingship was passed down to his heirs. He was also the first Christian king to rule Gaul, known today as France.

16. Matthew has taken Diana to the lab. While at the lab Diana has made the decisions to have her blood tested. Do you think she really wants to know what the test results will reveal? Do you think it might give insight about the death of her parents?
Yes, I think she really wants to know about her powers and heritage… and her parents.

17. And there's more wine drinking. Since the discussion about wine in the last section I have really been paying attention to the wine. When Matthew takes Diana to All Souls College they take a detour to an area below ground full of wine and private wine cellars. What are your thoughts on why any human creature would need that much wine? Is there something significant about the wine?
Wine means a lot to Matthew. It must be a French thing. LOL!

18. The relationship between Matthew and Diana is stepping up a little and getting more intimate. What are your thoughts about their relationship now.
Well, I liked that first kiss.

19. We know that Diana is a reluctant witch. She wants to accomplish things on her own without using her power but we have learned that her power has always taken a role in her accomplishments. She states "I don't want to look back on a life where I took everything rather than earned it." Matthew responds with "So you earn everything twice over. First you earn it by not simply taking it, and then you earn it again through work and effort. The advantages of being an otherworldly creature don't amount to much, do they?" This made me think about our past comments about wishing we could be like Samantha on Bewitched and twinkle our noses to get things done. Does Matthew's response to being otherworldly make you change your mind about wanting special powers? Do you really think it would be all that great?
I don’t think it would be without its pitfalls and frustrations. And I agree with Turtlecollector’s comments about dealing with the ethics of it. Still, I think it would come in pretty handy at times! Especially with regards to housework.

20. What were your reactions on the confrontation between Matthew and Knox when Diana tried to revisit Ashmole 782? Do you think Knox will make good on his threats to Diana?
Ugh. I don’t like Knox - at all!

21. Now we know why Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense. What do you think the motive is behind the envelope that was sent to Diana?
I think it was a scare tactic.

22. Matthew's history is starting to unfold more and more. Up until this point I didn't really care one way or the other for Matthew. With the revelation of the relationship between Matthew and Marcus my fondness for him has really grown. What are your thoughts on this relationship and his feelings towards Diana? Has it changed the way you feel towards Matthew?
Yes, love Marcus. It certainly made me warm up to Matthew. Loved it when he told her it was too late to back away from a vamp.

23. Throughout this section we keep seeing this phrase:"Bad things happen to witches who keep secrets" Why? Is Diana harboring secrets that we don't know about? If so what could they be?
I think this was because the person(s) who wrote it think she’s keeping a secret.

24. Wow!!! A lot of things are starting to happen. Is there anything you would like to share or have thoughts on?
I agree with others. I would be very hesitant to go meet Mathew’s maman, Ysabeau. Yikes is right! This woman is not only his mother, but a witch killer.

Jackie | 2143 comments Wow, great pictures and info, Lisa Kay!

Chapters 8-12

9. So it really was a yoga class! Mathew served a few home truths to Diana after the class. What did you think of this scene?
I was surprised that Diana seemed to be more accepting of the different creatures. And that she was starting to want to be with Matthew.

10. Hamish seems like a good character. I found it interesting that the author has introduced two characters in homosexual relationships (Hamish and Diana's aunt). Do you think there is any significance to this?
I don't think there's any special significance except that the author may be pointing out that there are many ways that people (beings) are different and that acceptance of others as they are is important.

11. Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense, but then later Diana recalls seeing the photos of them dead and Gillian claims witches killed them. Who/what do you believe?
Diana has the picture and believes Gillian that witches killed them.

Thoughts?
Yes, that doesn't make sense that vampires would draw attention to themselves. I don't believe Peter Knox can be trusted anyway.

I like that. I believe that it emphasizes the immortality aspect of vampires. It's fascinating to me that Matthew has experienced so much history.

14. So vampires are omnivorous and like wine. Is it just me or did they drink three bottles of wine at dinner and still manage to stand up and have an adult conversation?! :)
Must be part of that long living aspect. Definitely not affected by too much vino.

15. How do you feel about the blossoming romance between Diana and Matthew?
I like it but it makes me nervous too. How do they come to grips with the vast differences between them?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments @ Jackie

Glad you liked the pics. I had fun finding them.

#9 - I was a little surprised by Diana's acceptance of creatures, too, though I'm not sure why. Maybe because she's not accepting of herself?

#10 - I concur.

#14 - Nope. Doesn't seem to affect them like it does humans.

#15 - Yes, I'm a little nervous there, too.

25. Not a lot of action in this section, but we get to meet Ysabeau and Marthe and explore that amazing home! I was wondering about Marthe... she remains a servant and her hands are described as old and wrinkled. I wonder why someone would want to live forever as an aged servant. I hope we get to find out more about her. First impressions of this very unusual family?
Yes, Marthe is an interesting character; however, she seems happy in her work. **shrugs** Some people are. Well, when I first read this, I didn’t know if Diana should trust Ysabeau; I was very leery of her. And I wondered if Mathew was going to be a “momma’s boy.”

26. I am finding Diana more and more childlike, and Matthew is taking on a parental role with her (telling her she has to eat before going to sleep, buying her clothes, dictating when she is to wear them etc.). Have your impressions of either of these characters changed?
I like Diana. Granted, I think she is naïve and indecisive at times, but I think she’s been wrapped up in her studies. She does need looking after in a way, in that she is like an absent-minded professor. If a male was like that, we would call him ‘childlike.’

27. I googled Occitan and it is a romance language spoken in southern France. Do you think they speak in this language out of habit, or in order to preclude Diana from certain conversations?
Yes, I think they don’t want Diana to hear certain things, especially when they are disagreeing about her presence.

28. The description of the library was amazing. If you had access to something like that, what book would you love to see? Personally I'd love to see original manuscripts of some of my favourite books from Tolstoy or the Bronte sisters.
Oh, yes! I’d love to see some first editions. We take books for granted. They were so hard to come by and precious in the past.
29. Diana has started having vivid dreams and visions. I had to re-read the visions a few times as they seem to be past events, but with Matthew in them. What are your thoughts? Are these past or future images?
I’m keeping mum.

30. Ysabeau (pronounced ee zah BOH) seems to be warming to Diana and at one point during the dance scene says to Matthew "be careful with her". Was that just a warning about their dancing or something more?
When I read this the first time it surprised me, because I believe she know what happened to Eleanor.

Could be.

32. I had a bit of a laugh at the almost sex scene recalling Kristin's comment about if it would be possible for Diana to set Matthew alight accidentally! Are you (still) enjoying the romance angle? Would you like to see them stay together?
Yes. To both.

I don’t get the comparison to Twilight (and I’ve read that book several times) that this book gets. **shrug** I mean other than it has vamps in it. And vamps are protective of their mates. Twilight wasn’t the first vamp book. Plus, I think Domenico's history from Matthew makes the situation very different. I also don’t think he wants to have Diana for lunch; his agenda is much more sinister.

34. Wow! In this section we discovered what witchwater is. Water was expelled from all over her body. What are your thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages to this power? Does she have to be in a sad state and able to cry to use this power?
I would think she could drown someone. I did get the impression that she needed to be in a state that would make her cry.

35. At the end of Chapter 16 Matthew is staring at the print of The Goddess of the Hunt and reciting a poem. When Ysabeau and Diana go out to ride, Ysabeau allows Diana to watch her hunt and kill. During this excursion Ysabeau calls Diana "the goddess of the hunt." Is there some kind of connection or hint of something we are yet to understand or find out about Diana?
I think she is taunting her.

36. What are your thoughts and feelings about Matthew’s past (being married, a father, how he became a vampire)?
A lot of sadness there. Doesn’t surprise me he was married. I mean, he is 1500 years old. I couldn’t believe that Ysabeau made him a vampire somewhat against his will (he thought he was getting last rights). But, then, she does seem like someone who would do that.

37. While Matthew was gone Diana went snooping through his desk. She found some things that she probably shouldn't have been messing with. What do you think Matthew's reactions will be to her when he finds out? Should she have been snooping?
I don’t think she should have been snooping. But then, I’m not a snooper. I left my husband’s things private. I don’t know how Matthew will react; he does like to keep his secrets. He was pretty adamant about that with his son.

38. Diana talked Matthew in to letting her go hunting with him. After the hunt, with blood still present around his mouth, he kissed her. What were your reactions to this?
Ick. Of course, I’m a vegan.

39. Matthew warned Diana to be careful of his mother. Why?
Well, her history is one major stumbling block!

40. Diana and Matthew are now pronounced husband and wife (in a sense). I thought at this point we were going to finally see the "Sparks Fly" but instead we got bundling. LOL Were you disappointed and what do you think about this?
LOL! It was fine with me.

41. Under vampire terms they are officially married. What happens if one or the other changes their mind? Is there a vampire divorce?
**giggles** Yes, and it is worse than a “Sicilian Divorce.”

42. I wondered what kind of child they would have but we learned that they can't have children the "traditional" way. Diana seems to be ok with this as their children can be "made". Do you think she will ever regret not bearing children? Will she become a vampire so that she can live as long as Matthew and the made children if there are any?
Hmmm… I think she might regret it. And I don’t think she wants to become a vamp; and I don’t think Matthew wants her to. He likes her warm and alive.

43. Diana has been captured and we meet Satu. We have also learned that Gillian is dead. What did you think about this chapter and what do you think will happen next? Will she escape on her own using her powers or will Matthew come to the rescue and save her?
I was stunned when I read this the first time. I was really expecting something to happen when Matthew went back to Oxford. I was shocked Gillian was dead. I’ll keep mum about the rest; however, when I read it the first time I thought Matthew would find her.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments oubliette - French word, comes from the word "to forget"... and forgotten you would be.

44.We meet a new member of Matthew's family with the introduction of Baldwin. I was surprised to learn Matthew wasn't the head of the family. What did you think of Baldwin?
I don’t know if I trust him, entirely.

45. Now it starts to make sense why Diana's magic has only just started to seep out of her. She has been spellbound! Do you think this was fair/right of her parents to do to her?
I think her mother had her reasons. Plus, her mother know Matthew would come along and the spell would be undone.

46. When Satu took Diana she claimed that Matthew gave her his blood to kind of bind her to him. Do you think it is true? We know she spoke to truth about Matthew killing Gillian.
Nope.

47. What is the significance of Marthes tea? She made Diana promise to have one cup per day and her aunts claimed it may have been a type of contraception. But why do you need that with a vampire? Why would Marthe foresee this was needed?
Marte must know something we don’t.

48. Matthew has seven letters sent to the Knights of Lazarus. We know two (Baldwin and Marcus). Any ideas on who the remaining five could be? Will they all be vampires?
Nope.

49. Baldwin provides a warning that the witches purposefully let Diana go (as a gambit). Do you agree?
No.

50. I loved the Bishop house! All the ghosts, the house having a personality and the cat named Tabitha (why is that always a name in witch stories?!). What were your impressions of the home?
Very impressed! The house has a personality all its own.

51. Diana's father is a timewalker (and so is Diana!). Do you think we may meet her father in the future?
Probably. But maybe it will be the future "past."

52. So we discover that Matthew and Diana are connected somehow to the manuscript. Three missing pages and three types of creatures. Theories/predictions for how that page came to the Bishops and where the other pages are?
I’d best stay mum.

53. Conceptico! Ahh! What a shocking place to end this sections reading! Does that mean Diana and Matthew will have a baby??!!
Maybe!

9. So it really was a yoga class! Mathew served a few home truths to Diana after the class. What did you think of this scene?

Amira was wonderful and I hope we get to know her better even outside of yoga class. I liked it that it was a mixed class and that Matthew and Diana shared an interest in yoga. I was surprised that Matthew was so confrontational about Diana's outward rejection and sneaky use of her magic.

10. Hamish seems like a good character. I found it interesting that the author has introduced two characters in homosexual relationships (Hamish and Diana's aunt). Do you think there is any significance to this?

Maybe the author wanted to show acceptance of homosexual and interracial relationships, just like inter creature romance tolerance.

I love Hamish and admire his daemon skill with money. I'm surprised that Matthew has a daemon best friend. Does Diana have any friends?

11. Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense, but then later Diana recalls seeing the photos of them dead and Gillian claims witches killed them. Who/what do you believe?

I don't know why Gillian would tell Diana that witches killed her parents, if it's true, wouldn't that inspire more suspicion and anger toward witches. A better story would be that vampires killed them and framed the humans.

Thoughts?

I initially thought that maybe a vampire was losing their secrecy inhibition and going mad with blood lust or someone was trying to expose vampires.

Love it when historical fiction weaves real-world history into the fabric of their story. I enjoyed all the historical people that Matthew knew and how many were daemons.

14. So vampires are omnivorous and like wine. Is it just me or did they drink three bottles of wine at dinner and still manage to stand up and have an adult conversation?! :)

It makes me want to like wine, but sadly, wine makes me sick. I thought they just had a glass of the 2nd and 3rd bottles.

15. How do you feel about the blossoming romance between Diana and Matthew?

I am enjoying the slow development of Diana and Matthew's relationship. Normally, romance books go from meeting to their first kiss and making love on the first date and declaring their love for one another.

16. Matthew has taken Diana to the lab. While at the lab Diana has made the decisions to have her blood tested. Do you think she really wants to know what the test results will reveal? Do you think it might give insight about the death of her parents?

I think Diana was curious about her blood test results and her parents and Matthew's research. I liked the science parts and how their DNA differentiates daemons, witches and vampires from humans and other creatures.

17. And there's more wine drinking. Since the discussion about wine in the last section I have really been paying attention to the wine. When Matthew takes Diana to All Souls College they take a detour to an area below ground full of wine and private wine cellars. What are your thoughts on why any human creature would need that much wine?Is there something significant about the wine?

Since vampires don't eat cooked food and they can taste fruits and nuts, I think the sensory intake of the smell and taste of wine interests vampires. Matthew especially seems to have a passion for wine, like an imbibed hobby.

18. The relationship between Matthew and Diana is stepping up a little and getting more intimate. What are your thoughts about their relationship now.

The cozy dinners were very nice until Diana or Matthew got upset. I could easily see how Diana might tease a vampire about what he eats, but Matthew's angry reaction scared me. Loved it when Diana shouldn't move because the predator in Matthew was too volatile to control. Matthew sees Fear and Desire as the main emotions in life...hmmm.

The advantages of being an otherworldly creature don't amount to much,do they?" This made me think about our past comments about wishing we could be like Samantha on bewitched and twinkle our noses to get things done. Does Matthew's response to being otherworldly make you change your mind about wanting special powers? Do you really think it would be all that great?

I think powers would be worth it to live in a clean house without having to do any work, but it would be difficult to get satisfaction out of life if accomplishments were so easily attained instead of earned. I would expect that creatures are like humans and that most of them would be most concerned with having fun, power, fame or indulging themselves, rather than earned accomplishments.

20. What were your reactions on the confrontation between Matthew and Knox when Diana tried to revisit Ashmole 782? Do you think Knox will make good on his threats to Diana?

Peter Knox seems like a vicious and arrogant wizard and I've no doubt that he will do more than threaten Diana if it is to his advantage. I think Diana should go home to her aunts' protection. Hopefully, Matthew will protect her if the time comes. Diana's inability to recall Ashmole 782 implied that her success was tied to Mabon, but I don't think so.

21. Now we know why Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense. What do you think the motive is behind the envelope that was sent to Diana?

I'm surprised that Matthew couldn't google Diana and find out that her parents were murdered. The picture in the envelope was meant to freak Diana out and scare her

Marcus definitely made me like Matthew more. I am surprised now at how defensive Matthew became toward Marcus about taking Diana's blood knowing their relationship.

23. Throughout this section we keep seeing this phrase:"Bad things happen to witches who keep secrets" Why? Is Diana harboring secrets that we don't know about? If so what could they be?

Diana seems quite straightforward, so I don't know what secrets they are talking about. Matthew seems much more mysterious than Diana with lots of secrets and he's got lots of years of actions behind him.

24. Wow!!! A lot of things are starting to happen. Is there anything you would like to share or have thoughts on?

Why did Miriam start at Diana's August 13th 1976 birth date? When will Matthew start trusting Diana with some of his secrets? Vampires and witches (or any 2 creatures) can't be romantically involved because of a covenant agreed to a thousand years ago?

#10 – Oh, good question. No, I don’t think Diana has many friends other than family. She really is quite into her studies.

#11 – I thought this same thing!! Why would Gillian do that? Stupid, really. Unless, she just said it in the heat of the conversation/argument.

Ysabeau seems like a force to be reckoned with. I hope Ysabeau ends up liking Diana.

26.I am finding Diana more and more childlike, and Matthew is taking on a parental role with her (telling her she has to eat before going to sleep, buying her clothes, dictating when she is to wear them etc.). Have your impressions of either of these characters changed?

I am hoping that it was just the shock of the threats and being stalked by creatures that is spooking Diana and Matthew strikes me as a man used to having his way.

27.I googled Occitan and it is a romance language spoken in southern France. Do you think they speak in this language out of habit, or in order to preclude Diana from certain conversations?

Oh, I hope it was just habit, but with Ysabeau, I'm sure it could be to exclude Diana. Especially since Marthe had the worst English and she tried to use it in Diana's presence.

28. The description of the library was amazing. If you had access to something like that, what book would you love to see? Personally I'd love to see original manuscripts of some of my favourite books from Tolstoy or the Bronte sisters.

I would like to see that Gutenburg bible and maybe other old illustrated bibles. Shakespeare's original manuscripts would be so startling and interesting to see sitting on a shelf.

I would LOVE to hear Matthew talk about Will and other famous historic figures that he knew in years past. I'm sure Diana is fascinated since she is a historian and she can relate to Matthew and his tales of his life more than someone who isn't an expert on the past.

29. Diana has started having vivid dreams and visions. I had to re-read the visions a few times as they seem to be past events, but with Matthew in them. What are your thoughts? Are these past or future images?

I was wondering if they were past events or the future. Did Matthew know Rebecca Bishop who Diana looks like or another of her ancestors?

30. Ysabeau (pronounced ee zah BOH) seems to be warming to Diana and at one point during the dance scene says to Matthew "be careful with her". Was that just a warning about their dancing or something more?

I thought Ysabeau (thank you for the pronunciation guide) was warning Matthew to be gentle dancing with Diana, but you could definitely read more into that comment.

I just thought that Diana being a literary name can be seen in the past, but though I think we are supposed to think they are preordained, I like to think they are meant to be together because of their attraction.

32. I had a bit of a laugh at the almost sex scene recalling Kristin's comment about if it would be possible for Diana to set Matthew alight accidentally! Are you (still) enjoying the romance angle? Would you like to see them stay together?

They better stay together - I am getting emotionally involved in their relationship. I laughed that Diana is the one who gets frustrated in their sexual encounters, and Matthew, the male loves teasing and toying with her and exerts restraint and control. It's sort of role reversal in the physical aspect of their relationship.

It sounds like everyone who isn't a vampire could do with more vampire knowledge. Domenico's appearance reminds us all of how dangerous vampires are and how much we don't know about Matthew's past.

#20 – Yes, I think you have a good handle on Knox. And Diana’s success with Ashmole 782.

#21 – LOL! Good point.

#24 – Oh! I didn’t catch that about the B-Day. Hmmm…
