Oh my goodness.. baby powder?! hahaha
And 11 books?! wow. that is commitment. I tend to not like series that are that long. I just loose interest after about 5 books generally!

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Re: the wolves - I had the same thought as Karen. I thought to myself, "Please let this not turn into a werewolf thing." One of the reasons I waited so long to read it in the first place was because of the vampire angle. I hate when we have to trot out every single paranormal creature.

Whew!! I am so glad I'm not the only one that laughed. I'm going to try the series again and hopefully this time I will at least make it through the first book LOL

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 1359 comments I am fairly new to the paranormal genre but find it very interesting. I kind of avoided it for a long time after I read the Twilight Series which was my first ever paranormal read. I don't like that series and it gave me a very bad impression of this genre. But thanks to GR and my friends here I have discovered that all paranormal isn't THAT bad.

I'm not sure if I like weres as much as I like vamps, witches, ghosts and other creatures. It just seems weres have a tendency of showing up LOL But like the both of you, I'm glad the werewolf hasn't made it's appearance :)

IKR...baby powder LOL. I can't imagine any bad guy human or other to smell like baby powder. Couldn't it have been something a little more masculine or grown up-ish. Well I guess we read to be entertained and that certainly entertained me and gave me some good laughs :)

June 11 - Chapters 8-12

9. So it really was a yoga class! Mathew served a few home truths to Diana after the class. What did you think of this scene?

10. Hamish seems like a good character. I found it interesting that the author has introduced two characters in homosexual relationships (Hamish and Diana's aunt). Do you think there is any significance to this?

11. Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense, but then later Diana recalls seeing the photos of them dead and Gillian claims witches killed them. Who/what do you believe?

12. The Westminster murders are mentioned twice in passing, and then a little more in the meeting with Peter Knox. He claims vampires killed humans, but we also know from earlier conversations with Matthew and Hamish that vampires are a dying species. It seems to me that experienced vampires wouldn't make such a pubic killing. Thoughts?

13. There are quite a few references to Salem which made me look at The Crucible a bit more (cast of characters are here). Gillian claims that Diana's mother is the descendent of a prominent witch who "started" the Salem witch hunt (Bridget Bishop). How do you feel about how the book is trying to weave in real-world events?

14. So vampires are omnivorous and like wine. Is it just me or did they drink three bottles of wine at dinner and still manage to stand up and have an adult conversation?! :)

15. How do you feel about the blossoming romance between Diana and Matthew?

Robin and I will be doing questions for alternating days for the rest of the book. So she is up tomorrow! ;)

I hear ya! I have never read so much YA paranormal, dystopian or fantasy before GR. I admit I enjoy most of it though! I tend to go more towards the dystopian, so this book makes a nice left turn for me

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments 1. Is the book so far what you expected? Do you like the writing style?
I had bought this a long time ago, but forgot that Diana was actually a witch (duh --- it's in the title). I do like the writing style. It's very conversational. I am doing a combo of audio and kindle and the audio narrator is pretty good.

2. It seems Diana is a reluctant witch. I found it odd that she wanted to remain untrained. It seems dangerous somehow. Do you agree?
Yes, it seems very dangerous. Not only does she ignore her "witchy-ness", but she becomes a researcher --- yet, she is researching alchemy which definitely has "magical" underpinnings. It felt like she didn't want to acknowledge her past or her abilities.

3. This first section introduces daemons, witches and vampires as living amongst humans. Given the choice, what would you prefer to be?
I was going to put vampire straight up, because I've always liked a good vampire (like Lestat and Eric variety, not Edward), but living forever and drinking blood --- no thanks. Maybe I'll go with witch --- might be nice to avoid housework.

4. Do you think it will be significant that Diana's finding of the manuscript coincided with Mabon? (FYI - this is a pagan festival that starts on the autumnal equinox more info here )
Hum...I wasn't really sure that Mabon was significant for the finding of the manuscript. I think that her parents will come into play more.

5. So it seems that Diana doesn't understand her own powers or how it 'seeps' out of her as light in her dreams. There have been quite a few descriptions already about smells, sounds, feelings, light. What do you think will be the meaning of the scent of cloves that she couldn't shake when she woke up?
Ooops -- I didn't notice the scent of cloves. Even though Diana mostly denies her powers, while asleep she may be unconsciously using them.

6. Interesting that she has sort of allied herself with a vampire and the Wizard in the library seemed to be threatening her. Do you think she should heed what her Aunty taught her about the 'heirachy' of creatures and stay away from Matthew and Agatha? Would you trust them?
Well, Matthew seems to be a bit too hunky to ignore completely ;-) Also, he does seem to have some scholarly cred. I would certainly trust him over Agatha -- but I did like her explanation of looking for some explanations.

7. I loved her reaction to Matthew when she told him to call her by her first name and how he sensed it. Can you imagine being friends with a being that could sense you like that?
I would think that vampires are very primal. However, if she's like me --- my face give away a lot of my feelings.

8. The humour started towards the end of this set of reading (Diana being called "tasty" and Matthew thinking it was a threat!). Also the promise of a vampire at a yoga class! Do you think it is really a yoga class or something else?
I definitely think it's something else --- what, I have no clue. It did make me laugh though

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Logan wrote: "Re: the wolves - I had the same thought as Karen. I thought to myself, "Please let this not turn into a werewolf thing." One of the reasons I waited so long to read it in the first place was becaus..."

Ditto for me --- hoping that they don't throw every creature and the kitchen sink. I did think it was really odd about the wolves, but maybe he is trying to study how the different creatures evolved. Or maybe if there will turn out to be weres than it is about knowing ones enemy.
Harkness seems to have a different spin since her vampire can be seen in the light of day.

Parvathy | 242 comments 1. Is the book so far what you expected? Do you like the writing style?

To be frank the book is kind of making me feel stupid with all the endless information on microbiology, alchemy, history, research etc etc. Kind of like the Big Bang Theory. Her writing style is also a bit annoying. It like she expects the readers to just catch up to whatever info she just dumps on you.

2. It seems Diana is a reluctant witch. I found it odd that she wanted to remain untrained. It seems dangerous somehow. Do you agree?

I don't particularly enjoy characters that waste their potential. I get she is a reluctant witch but she has powers and there where times she has gotten in to trouble because of it. I would have appreciated her much if she trained herself and then decided not to use magic. But as they say there is always a purpose behind these things.

3. This first section introduces daemons, witches and vampires as living amongst humans. Given the choice, what would you prefer to be?

Witch would be preferable. I was a fan of the BEWITCHED serial and alway think of witches in those terms. So you can imagine the appeal

4. Do you think it will be significant that Diana's finding of the manuscript coincided with Mabon? (FYI - this is a pagan festival that starts on the autumnal equinox more info here )

May be but not sure at the moment

5. So it seems that Diana doesn't understand her own powers or how it 'seeps' out of her as light in her dreams. There have been quite a few descriptions already about smells, sounds, feelings, light. What do you think will be the meaning of the scent of cloves that she couldn't shake when she woke up?

She did associate the scent with the book and again with Mathew. Mathew was in her apartment at the time and there is something about the book that binds her to it. The combination must have done the trick

6. Interesting that she has sort of allied herself with a vampire and the Wizard in the library seemed to be threatening her. Do you think she should heed what her Aunty taught her about the 'heirachy' of creatures and stay away from Matthew and Agatha? Would you trust them?

At the moment I would trust Mathew but that may be because I am biased as I know from the synopsis Mathew is supposed to help her. Agatha on the other hand feels slightly unstable

7. I loved her reaction to Matthew when she told him to call her by her first name and how he sensed it. Can you imagine being friends with a being that could sense you like that?

That would be awkward. It is like you are wearing your heart on your sleeves literally

8. The humour started towards the end of this set of reading (Diana being called "tasty" and Matthew thinking it was a threat!). Also the promise of a vampire at a yoga class! Do you think it is really a yoga class or something else?

Something Else would be my guess.

Imke (immie75) | 1644 comments June 11 - Chapters 8-12

9. So it really was a yoga class! Mathew served a few home truths to Diana after the class. What did you think of this scene?

I liked this scene. It shows Matthews concern about Diana, which I did not expect, he seems to read her very well.

10. Hamish seems like a good character. I found it interesting that the author has introduced two characters in homosexual relationships (Hamish and Diana's aunt). Do you think there is any significance to this?

Maybe to the author, I don't think it has any significance to the story.

11. Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense, but then later Diana recalls seeing the photos of them dead and Gillian claims witches killed them. Who/what do you believe?

Diana and Gillian, Matthew may not know that Diana's parents are dead or he just spoke in the present tense as people sometimes do when they don't really know the people they are talking about.

Thoughts?

Not yet, I need to read a bit more about these Westminster murders, I think that will become a big part of the story. Peter Knox may have just said that the murders were committed by vampires to make Diana distrust Matthew.

I really like it, not just the historical references also the scientific/alchemic references made are drawing me in to the book.

14. So vampires are omnivorous and like wine. Is it just me or did they drink three bottles of wine at dinner and still manage to stand up and have an adult conversation?! :)

Well... they only say they finished the last bottle, not the other two during dinner.

15. How do you feel about the blossoming romance between Diana and Matthew?

I like it and they seem to be taking their time.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments June 11 - Chapters 8-12

9. So it really was a yoga class! Mathew served a few home truths to Diana after the class. What did you think of this scene?

I am not too familiar with yoga and I kept trying to picture the moves. I was glad to see that there are some 'creatures' that are willing to get together in one place and put aside hostilities. Diana also needed to see that she can't run away from what she is and needs to learn to live with it. She seems a bit naïve if she thought none of her abilities would seep through even if she doesn't overtly use them.

10. Hamish seems like a good character. I found it interesting that the author has introduced two characters in homosexual relationships (Hamish and Diana's aunt). Do you think there is any significance to this?

I like Hamish because he is not the stereotypical daemon. He brings perspective to Matthew and lets him be himself without judging him. In this book, prejudices between species are strong and hard to overcome by the majority, so I am glad there are some characters who shatter that wall. I don't think there is any significance to the characters having homosexual relationships.

11. Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense, but then later Diana recalls seeing the photos of them dead and Gillian claims witches killed them. Who/what do you believe?

I am confused about this too. I thought at first maybe they weren't really dead, then he is older so he may have been talking about before they died. Then when the witches claimed to have killed them, I really don't know what to think. Can any of the 'creatures' see ghosts?

Thoughts?

I don't think the vampires would make such a public killing. I think Knox might be part of a group trying to make people think vampires are killing humans in order to get rid of them. The vampires are becoming a dying species because they are getting framed for murders and then executed because of them.

The main character is a historian and several of the characters have lived for a long time. It seems that she would have to bring some element of it into the story. Those real events may have been how the author got her idea for the story in the first place.

The theme of this book to me se far: Matthew says it well to Diana, "Most of what you know about me--about vampires--was dreamed up by humans. These legends made it possible for humans to live around us. Creatures frighten them....Somewhere in each of these stories, there's a nugget of real truth, something that frightened humans and helped them deny we were real." This book is going to be about the search for the true origins and features of the 'creatures'.

14. So vampires are omnivorous and like wine. Is it just me or did they drink three bottles of wine at dinner and still manage to stand up and have an adult conversation?! :)

They did drink a lot of wine to have rational conversation, but it probably affects their bodies differently due to their unique powers. I thought it was interesting that she called a zoologist and asked about wolves to help figure out what a vampire would eat. What do wolves and vampires have in common?

15. How do you feel about the blossoming romance between Diana and Matthew?

I like it so far. I am hoping that he tells her everything(which he probably won't for awhile) and she will forgive him when she finds out after the fact. I am a sucker for 'opposites attract' and 'star-crossed lovers' themes.

9.So it really was a yoga class! Mathew served a few home truths to Diana after the class. What did you think of this scene?

I kind of liked this scene because he was very open and blunt with her about her denial of being a witch and using her powers.

10.Hamish seems like a good character. I found it interesting that the author has introduced two characters in homosexual relationships (Hamish and Diana's aunt). Do you think there is any significance to this?

Possibly but I'm not sure yet what it is.

11. Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense, but then later Diana recalls seeing the photos of them dead and Gillian claims witches killed them. Who/what do you believe?

Well I tend to believe Gillian simply because there has been references to "other witches know when another is lying". But on the other hand, I'm wondering if they are still alive and are hiding.

Thoughts?

I don't think vampires would make such public killings either. I wonder if it was vampires that did the killing or if they are just an easy target to accuse.

I like how authors intertwine fact with fiction. It's a great learning/teaching tool for readers. I often find real-world events in books. A lot of times it is things that I didn't explore until reading it in fiction :)

14. So vampires are omnivorous and like wine. Is it just me or did they drink three bottles of wine at dinner and still manage to stand up and have an adult conversation?! :)

I noticed that they were drinking a lot but didn't keep track of how many bottles LOL. Even at that, you are right, they weren't stumbling around drunk :)

15. How do you feel about the blossoming romance between Diana and Matthew?

HMMMMM...I don't know. I'm glad it isn't one of those rushed, sappy, love at first sight romances that makes you roll your eyes. LOL

9. Me too.

11. That is my thought too. They were both such powerful witches, I have to assume they are alive but even the witch community doesn't know (so Gillian was therefore not lying)

13. same here!

15. Yes atleast they haven't professed their love, and they are both in their 30s (well, he looks like it anyhow), so hopefully it won't be a typical YA romance!

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments 9. Yoga vampires and witches and daemons, oh my! I have to say, I really appreciate Matthew's patience with Diana. Though he has a temper, I like that he's not the typical bad boy.

10. That is interesting, and I hadn't thought about it until you mentioned it. At this point, I don't see much significance there.

11. I also noticed that the picture Diana referenced had pretty mangled bodies. I'm thinking her parents aren't actually dead.

12. The last thing the vampires want is to draw attention to themselves. If they are behind the killings, I would think they'd be turning them into vampires and not leaving them to rot. I think someone is trying to set up the vamps.

13. I love all the history. I had to stop reading and look up which French king was ruling in 1615 (Louis XIII, in case you wondered as well) during Matthew's chocolate story. I wish I could live for 1500 years!

14. As someone else mentioned, I noticed they only finished one bottle...which is still plenty of wine for two people. :)

15. I love it. I'm a sucker for love stories - especially when they're starcrossed and all that.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments 9. So it really was a yoga class! Mathew served a few home truths to Diana after the class. What did you think of this scene?
I thought the whole yoga scene was really funny -- the witches flying around, and the serene yet amazing strong vampires. I loved how the yoga instructor was able to "tame" them all.

10. Hamish seems like a good character. I found it interesting that the author has introduced two characters in homosexual relationships (Hamish and Diana's aunt). Do you think there is any significance to this?
Hum....I didn't really notice, but I live in California so it's not so unusual. I like that it was introduced as just a part of their lives, vs being an anomaly of a creature.

11. Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense, but then later Diana recalls seeing the photos of them dead and Gillian claims witches killed them. Who/what do you believe?
I didn't notice that Matthew did this, but I think to someone who has lived as long has he has perhaps time (and therefore tenses) have less meaning. I do think that they are dead --- otherwise they abandoned young Diana which makes them dis-likable.

Thoughts?
I've read ahead so I won't answer this one ;-)

I don't mind ---- considering that vampires live a long time, you have to ground it in some real-world events.
However, the one thing that seemed strange to me is that it seems that witches keep their mother's name (matriarchal lineage), but back in the day, that custom would have set them apart since most woman take their husband's name. If they were trying to blend into society, this would be a big red flag.

14. So vampires are omnivorous and like wine. Is it just me or did they drink three bottles of wine at dinner and still manage to stand up and have an adult conversation?! :)
No kidding --- I was thinking the same thing!!

15. How do you feel about the blossoming romance between Diana and Matthew?
I like it ---- Matthew seems pretty hunky :-D

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments @Imke
11. Good point --- I agree
12. Also agree that Knox was trying to plant seeds of distrust.

@Turtlecollector
10. I agree that Hamish balances Matthew. I also think that just like real life --- there are the stereotypes, but when people get to know people as individuals, the stereotypes go out the window, so to speak.

13. Great answer --- it's all a search for origins :-D

@Robin:
13. I agree, I often get caught up in a topic after reading about it in a book :-D

@Logan:
9. I agree that it's refreshing to have a male character that isn't a bad boy. He seems like a "normal" person.......for a vampire ;-)

~Melissa~ Ok Ladies - I know I'm starting this one late - I totally forgot - Yikes. Won't be able to start until tonight. Don't want to read any of your answers. Will get caught up as quick as I can and answer all questions for the chapters as I go.

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 1359 comments Chapters 13-17

16. Matthew has taken Diana to the lab. While at the lab Diana has made the decisions to have her blood tested. Do you think she really wants to know what the test results will reveal? Do you think it might give insight about the death of her parents?

17. And there's more wine drinking. Since the discussion about wine in the last section I have really been paying attention to the wine. When Matthew takes Diana to All Souls College they take a detour to an area below ground full of wine and private wine cellars. What are your thoughts on why any human creature would need that much wine?Is there something significant about the wine?

18. The relationship between Matthew and Diana is stepping up a little and getting more intimate. What are your thoughts about their relationship now.

19. We know that Diana is a reluctant witch. She wants to accomplish things on her own without using her power but we have learned that her power has always taken a role in her accomplishments. She states "I don't want to look back on a life where I took everything rather than earned it." Matthew responds with "So you earn everything twice over. First you earn it by not simply taking it, and then you earn it again through work and effort. The advantages of being an otherworldly creature don't amount to much,do they?" This made me think about our past comments about wishing we could be like Samantha on bewitched and twinkle our noses to get things done. Does Matthew's response to being otherworldly make you change your mind about wanting special powers? Do you really think it would be all that great?

20. What were your reactions on the confrontation between Matthew and Knox when Diana tried to revisit Ashmole 782? Do you think Knox will make good on his threats to Diana?

21. Now we know why Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense. What do you think the motive is behind the envelope that was sent to Diana?

22. Matthew's history is starting to unfold more and more. Up until this point I didn't really care one way or the other for Matthew. With the revelation of the relationship between Matthew and Marcus my fondness for him has really grown. What are your thoughts on this relationship and his feelings towards Diana? Has it changed the way you feel towards Matthew?

23. Throughout this section we keep seeing this phrase:"Bad things happen to witches who keep secrets" Why? Is Diana harboring secrets that we don't know about? If so what could they be?

24. Wow!!! A lot of things are starting to happen. Is there anything you would like to share or have thoughts on?

Yes I think she really wants to know and this is a relatively easy way to know the powers she has. It may give insight as to how her parents have died, maybe they knew the kind of powers she had and they tried to conceil them from the other witches.

When they drink the wine it is while having multiple course meals and some people like to drink a different kind of wine with each course. I don't think there is any significance to all the wine drinking. I think one of Matthew's hobby is wine, he has been around long enough to generate a large collection.

18. The relationship between Matthew and Diana is stepping up a little and getting more intimate. What are your thoughts about their relationship now.

They are taking it nice and slow. I like these kind of relationships in books, you get to know the characters and their relationship as they are getting to know each other.

No it wouldn't be.

20. What were your reactions on the confrontation between Matthew and Knox when Diana tried to revisit Ashmole 782? Do you think Knox will make good on his threats to Diana?

Knox will definitely make 'good' on his threats.

21. Now we know why Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense. What do you think the motive is behind the envelope that was sent to Diana?

It's a threat, a reminder to Diana what will happen when you keep secrets and won't do what other witches tell you.

It hasn't changed the way I feel about Matthew, it confirmed more or less what I already thought about him> I like Matthews character, his loyalty to the people he loves and the way he supports and protects Diana.

23. Throughout this section we keep seeing this phrase:"Bad things happen to witches who keep secrets" Why? Is Diana harboring secrets that we don't know about? If so what could they be?

I don't think she is. They are just trying to get her to tell how she opened the manuscript.

24. Wow!!! A lot of things are starting to happen. Is there anything you would like to share or have thoughts on?

Just that I can't wait to read more. The story is picking up the pace. Oh and I got the next book in this series today so when this one is finished I can continue with the story.

9. I agree she does seem naive for someone her age who is so well educated!

10. I also think the writer is exporing prejudices and I took it that using sexuality of characters is another way to do that. Although I may just be over thinking it :)

11. Hmm I wonder?

13. Nicely put!

9. True, It seems like the yoga instructor has her own unique abilities to be able to do that!

10. Sydney is not much different! ;) It only stuck out to me as I find it unusual in fiction these days (unless it is that genre) to have more than one character not in a hetro relationship unless the writer is trying to explore something (theme of prejudice?)

13. True. I guess as uch as they were blending, they also wanted to retain the "famous" surname for prestige amongst the witches

Chapters 13-17

16. Matthew has taken Diana to the lab. While at the lab Diana has made the decisions to have her blood tested. Do you think she really wants to know what the test results will reveal? Do you think it might give insight about the death of her parents?
I think she is finally interested in her heritage. It kind of annoys me because she is my age and she seems a bit dense in some ways! haha I think she is naive and doesn't really understand how the results may change her

I have a wine cellar, and when I read that section I wanted to swap cellars! :) I think it is a European thing so kind of goes with the idea of an aged vampire. I also assume that he doesn't get to enjoy much that isn't human, in terms of taste, so maybe wine does give him some sensation

18. The relationship between Matthew and Diana is stepping up a little and getting more intimate. What are your thoughts about their relationship now.
It is really her age I am having trouble with. she is acting like a 17 year old. I think they are both attracted to eachother on some deeper level that we may find out in time

19. We know that Diana is a reluctant witch. She wants to accomplish things on her own without using her power but we have learned that her power has always taken a role in her accomplishments. She states "I don't want to look back on a life where I took everything rather than earned it." Matthew responds with "So you earn everything twice over. This made me think about our past comments about wishing we could be like Samantha on bewitched and twinkle our noses to get things done. Does Matthew's response to being otherworldly make you change your mind about wanting special powers? Do you really think it would be all that great?
I agree with Matthew when he says later that she can not extracate herself from her powers. She uses them without realising because that is who she is. I would still like to have Jedi powers :)

20. What were your reactions on the confrontation between Matthew and Knox when Diana tried to revisit Ashmole 782? Do you think Knox will make good on his threats to Diana?
This can not end well. I think Diana's aunts should be there to help her. I don't think a vampire can really help her understand how to be a witch. she needs to start getting some lessons!

21. Now we know why Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense. What do you think the motive is behind the envelope that was sent to Diana?
It is a colour photograph which means the person who took it was there, or knows who was. A very scary threat

I do like him. And I think there is something about him and Diana together that was 'meant to be'. It is like they both have something drawing them together.

23. Throughout this section we keep seeing this phrase:"Bad things happen to witches who keep secrets" Why? Is Diana harboring secrets that we don't know about? If so what could they be?
Hmm.. if she does have secrets I don't think she even knows what they are! lol

24. Wow!!! A lot of things are starting to happen. Is there anything you would like to share or have thoughts on?
I love that he is taking her home to meet his mum! lol! Looking forward to the next section :)

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 1359 comments And here are my thoughts to my own questions :)

Chapters 13-17

16. Matthew has taken Diana to the lab. While at the lab Diana has made the decisions to have her blood tested. Do you think she really wants to know what the test results will reveal? Do you think it might give insight about the death of her parents?

I'm not sure really what Diana's motive was for this. Maybe she's curious to see what her powers really are. I hope that we will find out more about her parents and possibly the deaths based on the test results.

That's a lot of wine. I am wondering if drinking wine is Matthew's way of reminiscing kind of like the way we do with pictures. It seems every time he drinks wine parts of his past are revealed. Or was this a way to heighten Diana's senses so she would come to terms with some of her powers.

18. The relationship between Matthew and Diana is stepping up a little and getting more intimate. What are your thoughts about their relationship now.

Matthew does tend to anger easily. Diana had no clue she was angering him by asking how he thought she would taste...YIKES!!! A neat way for the author to bring about that first kiss. I am liking Matthew's care and concern for her well-being. AWWWWWWWW it's so sweet :)

After Matthew's statement my opinions on being otherworldly is changing. That seems like a lot more work than just doing my chores LOL I have enough stress and work without adding to it :)

20. What were your reactions on the confrontation between Matthew and Knox when Diana tried to revisit Ashmole 782? Do you think Knox will make good on his threats to Diana?

UMMMMMMM what happened to the manuscript? Makes me wonder if Mabon did play a role in Diana's ability to retrieve it and unlock the spell. I'm thinking the manuscript and the spell is meant just for her. I like the way Matthew protected Diana and means what he said to Knox. As evil as Knox is, I'm sure he will do everything he can to intimidate and/or harm Diana.

21. Now we know why Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense. What do you think the motive is behind the envelope that was sent to Diana?

I found it surprising that Matthew really didn't know that her parents were dead. I think the creatures know that the death of her parents is her weakness. If they continue to remind her of the deaths will this force her to breakdown and give them what they want.

When we were first introduced to Marcus I was drawn to him. I really like his personality/style. I never dreamed that he would be connected to Matthew in such a way :) My thoughts on Matthew have really changed as I see that he truly does have a gentle caring manner.

23. Throughout this section we keep seeing this phrase:"Bad things happen to witches who keep secrets" Why? Is Diana harboring secrets that we don't know about? If so what could they be?

After reading that phrase more than once it has bugged me and stayed in my mind. I'm wondering if Diana knows more about Ashmole 782 or the deaths of her parents but has blocked them from her memory. She does have special powers......

24. Wow!!! A lot of things are starting to happen. Is there anything you would like to share or have thoughts on?

I am really impressed with the relationship between Marcus and Matthew. While tending to Diana we saw a sensitive side of Marcus, but yet was that just the care-giver in him that we were already told about. He seems really concerned about Matthew's decision about keeping things from Diana, Diana being in the same house with his beloved grandmother AND Matthew's ability to take care of himself and Diana. Makes me wonder if Marcus will interfere in the relationship or if he will be angered and cause problems.

The whole scene involving the telephone call with the Aunts was a little comical. I'm glad the Aunts are working with Matthew and Diana and giving important information in regards to Knox.

Can I go live at Ysabeau house??? It sounds exceptional!!!!!

haha Robin - I love that you answered yourself! :)
I will therefore respond to your answers so that you don't need to do that too...lol

16. That makes me wonder if they have her parents DNA somewhere? Seems like most witches would not want vampires to have this information

17. I think you're right about the reminiscing being a bit part of it

20. Yes, Mabon must've been one of the criteria for her to get the manuscript

23. You could be right!

24. Yes, I want to live in that house (but maybe not with vampires... haha)!

@Kristin - oh true! That could make for one hell of a sex scene... hahaha.
I think at some point (you may not be there yet) there is a comment about how a vampire is killed, burnt and then their bones ground to dust. Seems like they are pretty tough to kill! lol

16. Matthew has taken Diana to the lab. While at the lab Diana has made the decisions to have her blood tested. Do you think she really wants to know what the test results will reveal? Do you think it might give insight about the death of her parents?

I think she does want to know what it reveals. She is a historian and she wants to know what her family history is. I don't think it will give insight about the death of her parents.

There must be something significant with the wine. Or maybe how they react to it? It does give Matthew a way to bring up different events in his past without obviously changing the subject.

18. The relationship between Matthew and Diana is stepping up a little and getting more intimate. What are your thoughts about their relationship now.

I still like their relationship. I also think that Matthew's protective instincts are going to cause havoc with it, though.

I don't think having special powers are necessarily good. Then you have to have a strong code of ethics to know when to use them and always be aware of people wanting or trying to manipulate you regarding them.

20. What were your reactions on the confrontation between Matthew and Knox when Diana tried to revisit Ashmole 782? Do you think Knox will make good on his threats to Diana?

Something bad is definitely coming from him

21. Now we know why Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense. What do you think the motive is behind the envelope that was sent to Diana?

It was Knox and Gillian warning Diana what could happen to her if she didn't do what they wanted and stay loyal to the witches.

I like him better as I find out he tries to be a good person, but he is definitely not perfect at it.

23. Throughout this section we keep seeing this phrase:"Bad things happen to witches who keep secrets" Why? Is Diana harboring secrets that we don't know about? If so what could they be?

She has secrets even she doesn't know about after her blood tests come back.

24. Wow!!! A lot of things are starting to happen. Is there anything you would like to share or have thoughts on?

I don't think I would want to go meet Matthew's mother if she is known to kill my species. But her house seems really cool and I would love to live in France even though I can't speak French. The countryside is so beautiful.

June 13 - Chapters 18-22

25. Not alot of action in this section, but we get to meet Ysabeau and Marthe and explore that amazing home! I was wondering about Marthe... she remains a servant and her hands are described as old and wrinkled. I wonder why someone would want to live forever as an aged servant. I hope we get to find out more about her. First impressions of this very unusual family?

26.I am finding Diana more and more childlike, and Matthew is taking on a parental role with her (telling her she has to eat before going to sleep, buying her clothes, dictating when she is to wear them etc.). Have your impressions of either of these characters changed?

27.I googled Occitan and it is a romance language spoken in southern France. Do you think they speak in this language out of habit, or in order to preclude Diana from certain conversations?

28. The description of the library was amazing. If you had access to something like that, what book would you love to see? Personally I'd love to see original manuscripts of some of my favourite books from Tolstoy or the Bronte sisters.

29. Diana has started having vivid dreams and visions. I had to re-read the visions a few times as they seem to be past events, but with Matthew in them. What are your thoughts? Are these past or future images?

30. Ysabeau (pronounced ee zah BOH) seems to be warming to Diana and at one point during the dance scene says to Matthew "be careful with her". Was that just a warning about their dancing or something more?

31. There have been a few references to a literary Queen Diana, and then in the manuscript Diana reads we get a bit of detail about the Moon Queen and the Sun King. I can't help but wonder if this is all connected somehow with Diana and Matthew. Do you get the feeling they have a spiritual/past world/supernatural connection?

32. I had a bit of a laugh at the almost sex scene recalling Kristin's comment about if it would be possible for Diana to set Matthew alight accidentally! Are you (still) enjoying the romance angle? Would you like to see them stay together?

33. Domenico's introduction reminded me a bit of Twilight when Edward tries to protect Bella from other vampires (just from the movie, I have never actually read the books). What are your thoughts on this scene and Matthew's quick get-away? He keeps saying Diana has "a lot to learn about vampires". I think we do too!

16. Matthew has taken Diana to the lab. While at the lab Diana has made the decisions to have her blood tested. Do you think she really wants to know what the test results will reveal? Do you think it might give insight about the death of her parents?
I found it interesting that she did want it tested since she seems to go out of her way to suppress that part of her ancestry (since it is possibly linked to her parents). I think 1) Matthew didn't want to do it, so she wanted to be contrary and do it and 2) she does seem to try to face her fears head-on sometimes --- and so because she was afraid, she decided to do it.

I too thought it was really excessive --- Matthew might need to have a friend called Bill :-D Given all the stuff I have amassed in only the 7 years I've owned a house --- I can only imagine what you might amass when you live for 1500 years!!!

As an aside, I do think that Harkness is really descriptive and the relationship between Diana and Matthew really involves ALL their senses.

18. The relationship between Matthew and Diana is stepping up a little and getting more intimate. What are your thoughts about their relationship now.
Love it!! Seriously, I definitely have a crush on him. I think that she's really interesting so I like what is happening. I also like that they seem to have genuine respect for each other --- it's not all about the looks.

I took Matthew's comment to mean --- what's the use of being other-worldly if you're not going to use your special powers. On the flip side, I think that Diana is afraid of wishing for something and having it come true with dire consequences --- like wishing someone harm or something. I still think no housework would be great :-D, however we don't see yet if there are costs associated with using powers. (Magic always comes at a price to quote Mr Gold on Once Upon a Time).

20. What were your reactions on the confrontation between Matthew and Knox when Diana tried to revisit Ashmole 782? Do you think Knox will make good on his threats to Diana?
I think that Knox is definitely on the bad side and will try to do something to Diana --- we also learn that her father didn't like him so he might have had something to do with her parents death.

21. Now we know why Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense. What do you think the motive is behind the envelope that was sent to Diana?
Scare tactics !

I like hearing his history and thought it was interesting that he has a "family" --- and that they seem to stay in contact.

23. Throughout this section we keep seeing this phrase:"Bad things happen to witches who keep secrets" Why? Is Diana harboring secrets that we don't know about? If so what could they be?
I'm not sure that Diana knows she's harboring secrets.

24. Wow!!! A lot of things are starting to happen. Is there anything you would like to share or have thoughts on?
I loved Diana's reaction to Matthew saying that she was going to meet his mom :-D
I thought it was interesting that there was the council (can't remember the name) which had demons, witches and vampires --- what I wasn't sure about was that it sounded like Knox was on it --- maybe since it's inception way back when..... I thought only vampires had really long lives!!

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments 16. I think Diana is a curious person - otherwise she wouldn't be a historian. I'd sure want to know the secrets of my blood!

17. I think since it's the only beverage Matthew can really drink and enjoy, it's become sacred to him. I do want to know why he likes wine, but not tea or coffee though. What's the deal? Or is it just personal taste?

18. I really like them together, but I fear it's going to be a bumpy road.

19. Any kind of advantage comes with responsibility. Whether you're born into tons of money, or a royal family, or as a witch - there always reasons you can give yourself for not earning things, or for having to work harder to achieve them. I think being a witch would be complicated and difficult, but not overly burdensome.

20. Oh yes. That Knox fellow is a bad egg.

21. I'm bummed that I was wrong and they really are dead. :( I find it odd that the entire creature world wouldn't have been buzzing about their deaths, though. How could he not know?

22. It seems like Matthew has tried to lead a good life and limit the harm he causes. I hope he and Diana can break the covenant and get more creatures to work together instead of stay so separate.

23. If Diana does have secrets, they are locked away in her subconscious. Maybe as she starts to unleash her powers we'll see some old memories come to the surface.

24. I'm ready for Diana to start embracing being a witch. I want to see those sparks fly!

I was wondering about Marthe... she remains a servant and her hands are described as old and wrinkled. I wonder why someone would want to live forever as an aged servant. I hope we get to find out more about her. First impressions of this very unusual family?

I already love this family, yes even Ysabeau I think she improves when we get to know her better, especially Marthe. And the fortress, wow. I loved the descriptions of the rooms and the fresco's. I'm wondering what Matthew thinks about them.

26.I am finding Diana more and more childlike, and Matthew is taking on a parental role with her (telling her she has to eat before going to sleep, buying her clothes, dictating when she is to wear them etc.). Have your impressions of either of these characters changed?

I didn't get that impression about Diana. And I think he only bought her the riding clothes which made perfect sense to me, I wouldn't want to go riding a horse in a pair of thin leggings, ouch. Yes Matthew is making sure she eats, she did have a strong reaction to the events that happend in Oxford and an adrenaline overdose.

27.I googled Occitan and it is a romance language spoken in southern France. Do you think they speak in this language out of habit, or in order to preclude Diana from certain conversations?

I think both, when it's Marthe and Matthew talking is's habbit, he translates almost immediately. When Ysabeau speaks in this language it is to shut Diana out, at least at first.

28. The description of the library was amazing. If you had access to something like that, what book would you love to see? Personally I'd love to see original manuscripts of some of my favourite books from Tolstoy or the Bronte sisters.

I loved the description of the library, but not only that, also the descriptions of the books Diana gets from the shelves. I wanted to get my hands on them. I like books about science, especially biology and anatomy books the illustrations alone. But I do also like the classics as Jane Auston.

29. Diana has started having vivid dreams and visions. I had to re-read the visions a few times as they seem to be past events, but with Matthew in them. What are your thoughts? Are these past or future images?

They are past events not only of Matthew, but also of her. Maybe she is using her own memories as a guide to Matthews they seem to have the death of her parents and maybe his father incommon.

30. Ysabeau (pronounced ee zah BOH) seems to be warming to Diana and at one point during the dance scene says to Matthew "be careful with her". Was that just a warning about their dancing or something more?

I think for something more.

Yes, but not only the references to the Queen and King of the alchemie manuscript. Also the references to Diana the goddess of the hunt.

32. I had a bit of a laugh at the almost sex scene recalling Kristin's comment about if it would be possible for Diana to set Matthew alight accidentally! Are you (still) enjoying the romance angle? Would you like to see them stay together?

Yes and Yes. I really like how this romance is developing, and I really would like them to stay together. I think Diana has sort of bound Matthew to her already, thinking about the scene in Oxford just after she found the picture of her parents and she is in her bed held by Matthew and thinking about a heavy chain letting loose in the depths ending by Matthew.

Yes we do. But we also need to more about Diana and so does Matthew.

Parvathy | 242 comments 9. So it really was a yoga class! Mathew served a few home truths to Diana after the class. What did you think of this scene?

Yoga class with a twist. I liked someone telling Diana the truth to her face. She is getting really annoying

10. Hamish seems like a good character. I found it interesting that the author has introduced two characters in homosexual relationships (Hamish and Diana's aunt). Do you think there is any significance to this?

I don't think so. I didn't give it much thought. May be it will show that they will be more understanding of the relationship between Diana and Mathew

11. Matthew referred to Diana's parents in the present tense, but then later Diana recalls seeing the photos of them dead and Gillian claims witches killed them. Who/what do you believe?

They are dead. Mathew however knows something more than that. Someother way by which they might be alive

Thoughts?

The witches trying to frame them would be my guess

I think the author just likes heaping information on unsuspected victims. I am completely sleep deprived so do excuse me if I turn a little judgmental LOL

14. So vampires are omnivorous and like wine. Is it just me or did they drink three bottles of wine at dinner and still manage to stand up and have an adult conversation?! :)

Don't know much about never having tasted wine or knows its side effects

15. How do you feel about the blossoming romance between Diana and Matthew?

A bit out of the blue one minute he is stalking her and the next falling in love. I read everything he saw and still I am having a hard time even liking the character

@Imke

25. The descriptions are amazing!

26. Maybe it is just me then! Diana is getting on my nerves

28. True the descriptions of the books... I felt lke I could smell them

31. Yes that's right! Somehow these are all connected

32.Ah, yes I forgot about that scene. I think 'bound' is the right kind of word

@Parvathy

9. I agree :)

13. Lol!!

15. It feels a bit like that to me too. I never do well with "love at first sight" type storylines especially when we are talking about 35+ year olds. Maybe we are just not romantic ;)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments 25. I love Marthe. I think she may still be a servant because it's what she knows. Habits and occupations can be hard to break. If Ysabeau is all she knows and loves, and she can only stay with her as a servant, why not just keep doing it?

26. I am really ready for Diana to put her big girl pants on. I hated how much Matthew was ordering her around in this section.

27. I think it's habit, and probably also a desire to keep the language alive. If that's what they spoke for the longest amount of time, it makes sense that they'd keep using it. I think the privacy element also helps.

28. William Shakespeare's folios!!

29. I'm not sure what to make of the visions just yet. It seems like not quite past, not quite future.

30. I think Diana is growing on Ysabeau. She remained remarkably calm during Diana's declaration of love.

31. I am starting to think these two were destined for each other somehow. The visions seem to allude to similarities in their past experiences and ways they may be intertwined.

32. I am firmly entrenched in this romance. Bring on the sparky sex!

33. I thought Domenico was a great character. He gives us a real sense of what vampires are like and how dangerous they can be. I hope we get to see more of him.

@Logan

25. Yes I think there is more to their relationship. Although she is a servant, she is clearly treated like one of the family

26. Lol - yes, big girl pants is a good way to put it! It is geting on my nerves

28. I thought about that, but decided it may be too controversial with those who believe he didn't actually write them. I generally point people in the direction of Shakespeare The World as Stage by Bill Bryson . He convinced me that Shakespeare was the writer

32. hahahaha

33. Same here. we can't only be introduced to nice vampires!

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments I didn't know Bill Bryson wrote a book on Shakespeare! Thanks for the rec! That's the funny guy, right? Or am I confusing the name?

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments 25.
What I like best is that they really seem like a family. Assuming that Marthe was made before Matthew makes her more than 1500 years old. I think back then a servant at a chateaux like that is living the good life so I didn't really find it surprising.

26.I am finding Diana more and more childlike, and Matthew is taking on a parental role with her (telling her she has to eat before going to sleep, buying her clothes, dictating when she is to wear them etc.). Have your impressions of either of these characters changed?
I agree, in some ways I find her a bit annoying. For example she does seem to be obstinate just because. I do think that Matthew is very protective of her and I'm not certain that we fully understand his motives. I still am really intrigued by him.

27.I googled Occitan and it is a romance language spoken in southern France. Do you think they speak in this language out of habit, or in order to preclude Diana from certain conversations?
I think a bit of both. I lived/worked in France for a while. I found that once a "language" was established for a relationship, it felt weird to change to a different language.

28. The description of the library was amazing. If you had access to something like that, what book would you love to see? Personally I'd love to see original manuscripts of some of my favourite books from Tolstoy or the Bronte sisters.
I think I would like to see some of the illustrated texts --- something like the Le Morte D'Arthur.

29. Diana has started having vivid dreams and visions. I had to re-read the visions a few times as they seem to be past events, but with Matthew in them. What are your thoughts? Are these past or future images?
I think that it might be a combination. I have often had those type of dreams when I'm in a state that I know that I'm dreaming and put events or people together that don't belong.

30. Ysabeau (pronounced ee zah BOH) seems to be warming to Diana and at one point during the dance scene says to Matthew "be careful with her". Was that just a warning about their dancing or something more?
I thought that was more of a warning to Matthew not to fall for her and break the convenant.

I'm not sure --- it seems that vampires and witches don't really socialize so I just thought it was a soul-mates type of thing.

32. I had a bit of a laugh at the almost sex scene recalling Kristin's comment about if it would be possible for Diana to set Matthew alight accidentally! Are you (still) enjoying the romance angle? Would you like to see them stay together?
I do still like the romance.

Yes --- I think that Domenico had some type of relationship with Matthew's sister (vampire sister or real sister --- I'm not sure about), which puts him on edge around this "friend". I hope we get more back-story.
