ABANDONED.Dagger, possibly cursed, causes shape shifting. At least 9 years old.

I read a book a long time ago, and I cannot remember much about it, but if you can help me find it I'd be extremely grateful.
What I remember (not much)
There was a dagger (cursed?) that every time it drew blood would cause the wielder to change form.
The protagonist went through many forms (the dagger was always incorporated into the new form), I think one was a cat, I'm almost certain one was a dragon and he(?) would chew the talon or maybe it was break his tooth, it was one of those, not sure which, to make sure he stayed in his dragon form.
He lived in a cave as a dragon.
I'm sorry that's all I can remember, please help.

I see in your topic title that it's at least 9 years old, so that helps. I wonder if I can 'poke' your memory at all...:

Do you remember if he(?) was hiding from someone or something, or trying to quest for something, or anything about the storyline of the plot?

Do you remember if he(?) had any companions?

Do you remember if he was trying to get rid of the curse of the dagger, and if so, whether he was trying to use potions, or a talisman, or a spell, or....?

I remember it was a he. I don't think he could get rid of it because it became a part of him when he changed shapes. When he became a dragon I believe it was a claw, that he would gnaw on to try to keep it from changing him again. I guess it activated from blood? I was only around 9 when I read it so it's a rather distant memory. It wasn't a youth or YA book though.
I don't believe he had any companions.
I don't think the dagger was originally his, not sure whether he stole it or found it.
I want to say he used it in self defense at some point, having no idea what it did.
