The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
question
Just plain weird

I got the feeling that even though it was a paranormal/fantasy book or whatever, it was just strange. Has anyone ever seen Drag Me to Hell or Insidious? It starts out as a scary movie but then it just gets creepy and weird. And not good weird but confusing and jumbled. Too many elements are introduced and one thing beats out the other for attention. Is it a murder mystery, a comedy or romance or a thriller? What the hell is it? What the hell does that note in the beginning have to do with anything? Why does she even have powers? Someone please help me to understand. I accredit my confusion to the fact that I read it in two days.

The second book helps cover a lot of things. And I think mystery was an element the author was going for. We don't even know her true name. As for the powers and things (I have read the second book) you will find out. Give your brain some time to process this, than read the second. I would say more but it would give A LOT away :) hope this helped.
This is a good book, when I was in the first pages, I didn't knew if everything was product of the fantasy, or everything was real. The author made a good job playing with our minds. You should read the second book, it explain A LOT, really.
I am also frustrated with the note at the beginning. The book has NOTHING to do with it!!! The note at the beginning doesn't even make sense with the story.
I agree with Diana and Erin, it might help if you read the second book!
The note at the beginning is probably just to make it a little more mysterious - especially about the body count.
The note at the beginning is telling the reader that she is about to tell her story and it is from her point of view. In the third book, I am sure that we will all discover the truths of that note (like us her name really Mara Dyer?? Why did she choose that name etc).
