It does sound like it has huge potential to go wrong. I wonder how authors will actually allow their works to be published in this way, it seems like you are essentially allowing your characters to be used for whatever and that can't be easy. I couldn't imagine anyone trying to change characters from books I've read into something they aren't, let alone use my own characters.

Hmmm. Although I do write fanfic it is for an author which has been dead for ages and I don't make money from it. It is good writing practice and a lot of fun but I think just for a selected audience. I doubt I would be happy if some random stranger used my characters to make money from.
It's very limited...only two properties now from Alloy Entertainment - Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars. Not a great deal...they can steal what you create and use it w/out paying you - and Amazon owns it for the length of the copyright.
The interesting thing about this is that in my History of Print class in school, we were just discussing authority in the publishing and writing industry. I did an entire essay on it and one of my supporting ideas that things were changing was fanfiction. Low and behold, a few weeks later, Amazon makes this announcement.As it is though, it's not very broad yet. I'm curious if anyone else will get on board. I feel like authors won't like this so much. TV shows are different because of the fact that not just one person sits and writes them. They usually have multiple writers.
The first e-book I ever read was "1632" by Eric Flint. It bloomed out into several authors adding to it. I don't think it was called FanFic in those days. Eric wrote several sequels to add to the story, also some with a co-author in addition to the several authors that wrote expanding the story off onto side branches. This was before the Sony or Kindle e-ink readers existed. Eric was way ahead of others, releasing all his work without DRM. Obviously he was also way ahead of Amazon with FanFic also.
That would be awesome as I have one I'd like to have published :)
I just saw this. I'm still going through their landing pages and listed conditions. It seems like it has a huge potential to go wrong, but if anyone can get intellectual property controllers to share with writers, it would be Amazon.
What do you guys think?
