The information age has long gone, and the clouds of data that drove it are no more than ash, the knowledge once locked into those servers now forgotten. The tiny population gets by as best it can, improvising and living off the land, or scavenging through long-derelict cities for scraps of metal, tools or trinkets that can be used for barter. But a few pockets of ancient technology remain, along with people who can make them work, and there are some who will go to any extreme to get hold of those secrets.

"I was captivated from the outset by this post-apocalyptic tale set in the village of Faringdon.
I found the plot original and the strength displayed by the female characters memorable.
During the time I was reading I was transported into the Inn, the watchtower and the dungeon such was the atmospheric descriptions drawn by this talented author. I felt the hard, damp, cold floor and smelled the odours. I could imagine the streets and carriages and even the clothing of the cast.
This for me was storytelling at it’s very best, my imagination was challenged, senses stimulated and by the end of the book the characters felt like friends. I hope I meet them again soon!"

To me, the best part of this book was definitely the world-building, into which Tim has put a lot of thought and detail, and which was very engaging to explore. I'm looking forward to discovering more about it in the next in the series. The setting of a real, future, Oxfordshire, is also great, letting the imagination run riot by superimposing this bleak future onto a well-known landscape, rather than setting it on an entirely fictional Earth, or other world.
