ABANDONED. 4-5th Grade Chapter Book about a self aware/intelligent house?

My friend is trying to remember a book she read in the 5th grade. These are the details I could get from her:

"I am trying to figure out the name of this book I read when I was in probably the 4th or 5th grade... (This would mean it was published around or before 1998) it was a fiction book about a Smart House that I think ended up having a mind of its own or something... it was futuristic....does ANYONE know what book it was. Think book fairs.. or something. So broad, I know. HELP!"

" It was about like these people that discovered the house and they kept discovering all of these different things about how it was a smart house."

"i remember like it was in the middle of a whole bunch of trees or a forest or something lol and it did not have the name home or house in the title"

She remembers it being more of a chapter book and these vague details. Anyone?

Not Howl's but I love that book and the Miyazaki movie version.
