The Next Time You See Me
question
the next time you see me

I won my first book through goodreads, the next time you see me, I am half way through it and can't make heads or tails of it... let me get to the end, quickly please, and then I will rate it. anybody else read this yet?
The Thanksgiving ending confused me. I couldn't tell if it was a flashback or if it meant the whole story of the missing sister's death had been fabricated. For the most part I did like the book, but think it needed some tweaking.
I also won this book through goodreads and lost interest in it. Was hoping to pick it back up and finish it but I keep getting side tracked with books that are so much better. I guess that should tell me how to rate this book.
This was a "First Reads" book sent to me and I was pleasantly surprised by the caliber of writing - I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who appreciates an intelligently written book.
"The Next Time You See Me" starts out as a kind of murder mystery, but it is really about the people in a small town and their interactions.
Excellent character development!! I love to really get to know the characters, their backgrounds and their incentives to act in a certain way. Holly Goddard Jones writes in such a compelling way that I found myself thinking about each character and the storyline during the day at work. I could hardly wait to start reading again at the end of the day, during my commute home. This author can make even subjects you may have little knowledge or interest into a fascinating study. It's not so much what happens, it's the how and why that makes this book a good read!

I just finished reading this and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The mystery is definitely secondary to the characters. It's much more the story of some people living some very unfulfilling lives than a mystery.
I'm with Terry, I was definitely surprised by the quality of a first-time author. The story caught me right away. It did move along from the usual crime story. Twists and turns and people are not who or what they seem. Like most bullies, the young ring leader at the factory is a coward. Then the teens become so important. I really liked the flashback at the end, great.
Yes and I hated it. Horribly unlikeable characters and soooo despressing with a weird ending. I won my copy, too, and I had to struggle to get through it.
I won this book too a while ago and finally finished it. I did like it, but mostly because I liked the characters -- they all felt pretty real to me in that no one was perfect but seemed to be trying to be better. I felt for pretty much everyone and what they were feeling about the situations they were in.
I will say the ending felt a little weird. Abrupt, to me. (And I do mean the ending, not the sort of flash-back epilogue; it also felt weird but I think it put more of an end on the story than the story's actual end did.)
I definitely agree with Randee's comment, the mystery is a secondary point to the book. The characters are the primary focus.

I really enjoyed the book. I'm from a small town. The book was believable for me as being like the setting of a small town. I like the minute details the author gave of everyday songs, food and other details. This really gave the book flavor.
I noticed the relationships between the children started mirroring the relationships between the adults at one point in the book.
I would enjoy reading another book by this author, I think.
