SOLVED. Book About a Child in a Castle/Dungeon with Trolls [s]

I have one. The story is sort of creepy. I was at a summer camp near my house one year, and there was this book I was obsessed with. I loved it so much, and would always read it. Looking back now I'm not sure if some of the details I remember are the real story or just my imagination. Anyways, it was this book about a boy who was orphaned at a castle, he travels into the dungeon one day and meets this creepy, troll-like animal. I dont remember much after that except that there is this door at the end of the hall near his room, and in the middle of the night he can hear the monsters trapped on the other side calling his name. The monsters on the other side were banished there after there was this really big war or something. It was really creepy and it gave me nightmares.
The cover had this boy holding a lantern, its supposed to be in the dungeon, I guess. I think there was three or four hairy monsters around a corner hiding from the boy. There was a purple band at the top with the publishers name, and the name of the book was in gold letters.
Anyone know what book I mean? Has anyone heard of it? Does it sound familiar? It's creeping me out a bit right now, to be honest, because I can't find anything about it.

i think that the publisher's mark on the book was large and took up a lot of the cover, like the avon camelot one does/did. it's an older book, probably obscure and cheap or something, because the summer camp i found it at was very low-budget.
