For starters--this isn't for me, but for a friend. She remembers reading a book (presumably not an adult book) in middle school (3-4 years ago). The story featured a kid who was a bully. He got kicked out of school and was sent to an island, possibly with some sort of guide/mentor. At one point, he is attacked by a bear.

Anyone have any ideas?
