Loved this series, though I did find the final book a bit of a letdown. I think because the expectations were so high, and then the resolution was a bit too convenient and the book seemed to meander some.

2019 was a great reading year for me. I started to add notes, but the list was too long. :)

Josh's books and audiobooks this year, including the Footsteps in the Dark anthology: Mainly by Moonlight and I Buried a Witch; The Monuments Men Murders; Slay Ride; and I loved the audio version of Green Glass Beads

Series (I read, re-read, or read the latest book of in 2019)
Ben Aaronovitch's Peter Grant series (urban fantasy/paranormal, not m/m) audiobooks

Charlie Adhara's Wolf at the Door series

Gregory Ashe’s books: The Hazard and Somerset series and the Borealis Agency series.

K.J. Charles Lilywhite Boys series: Any Old Diamonds, Gilded Cage, The Rat-Catcher's Daughter

Cordelia Kingsbridge's Seven of Spade's series (although I agree with KC's comments on the final book)

Lily Morton's Finding Home series: Oz, Milo, Gideon

Avrile Parker's Darke & Flare series: Darke Accused, The Double

Jordan Castillo Price's Psycop series (Book 10: Murder House) and her The ABCs of Spellcraft Collection: Volume 1 audiobook

Books (alpha by author) )
R. Cooper: Wicklow's Odyssey

A.J. Demas: Something Human

K.D. Edwards: The Last Sun

Taylor Fitzpatrick: Thrown Off the Ice

Harper Fox: Kip's Monster

Lillian Francis: Under the Radar

Sarah Granger: A Minor Inconvenience

Bud Gundy: Somewhere Over Lorain Road

Talia Hibbert: Work for It

I'm looking forward to re-reading this series. I started reading it when the second book came out, so it was a long wait until the big finale. One of my favourite series.

The third book in Anna Butler's Lancaster's Luck series will be out soon, which I am looking forward to--The God's Eye.

I know! Over the last year I've really trying to read the books that have been on my Kindle for years and years. I haven't made too much progress, because of all the exciting new books that keep coming out, but it's an on-going effort and there are small gains. Because of all the moving around I've been doing for so many years, I didn't really allow myself to buy paper books, but now I have a house and I get to buy paper books again! I've already indulged. I don't have any bookcases yet, but that's a project for this year.

I remember seeing recently that someone had succeeded in their challenge to read all of the books they bought in 2016 last year. Someone I know liked their status update, and I thought, wow, that's a great idea! I used to keep track, with postit notes, when I acquired print books, but didn't do it consistently and then gave up. Now I want to do it again. But to have a GR shelf for it, would be crazy, where I could include the ebooks and whatnot. Then again, I think that might be overkill. I do like to plot and plan my reading too much already.

WMD | 251 comments Am reading "Stalked by Shadows" by Lissa Kasey, and am enjoying it. A New Orleans ghost tour story, m/m, likable characters creepy shadow creatures so far.

Made me think of two other ghost tour m/m stories that enjoyed:
Badlands by Morgan Brice
The Amazing Blue Billings by Lily Morton
Any other good ghost tour specific options?

I can think of several other professional ghost or spirit workers specific mm (Psycops, Tyack and Frane by Harper Fox, etc), but I feel like I have forgotten another book w/ghost tours specific theme.
These are the things I muse on for the new year :)

For those of you who are making your way currently through Anna Butler’s sci-fi series, Taking Shield, that starts with Gyrfalcon, or who want to give it a reread and need people to yell about Joss with, I have resurrected our archived BOM thread. This thread is for the whole series now, and there will be spoilers. But please, do join our discussion!

I have just finished book two, and have lots of feelings that some of us have been discussing in my review thread, and will start book three, maybe next month.

message 15828: by WMD (new)

WMD | 251 comments Yeah, there are so many reasons to yell at them and at that town. The series stays murky through the first books then implodes awfully in book 4 or 5 (Criminal Past, I think). I actually am going to have to swear off Ashe's work unless someone pre-reads them for me and assures me the violence doesn't escalate so brutally. It was unexpectedly a different level, for me. Still don't understand why anyone would live in that town.

I was reading Lies Sleeping by Ben Aaronovitch, but as one reviewer put it, it’s got a crazy spaghetti plot. I need to put it down for now. It’s also been a long time since I read book six, and that’s affecting things too. But I hear it ends the main plot so I do want to come back to it soon. Might be where I end this series though.

In the meantime, I’ve started The Long Call by Ann Cleeves. I loved her sweet author’s note at the beginning. I always assumed she was some remote person the way her books are, so I’m glad to see she’s not. Lol.

My reading of books went way down in 2019... though I think that's mostly to do with the fact that my reading of fanfiction went way up. lol.

I'm hoping to read more books again, in 2020. :-)

Antonella | 11563 comments So last night I finished re-reading the paperback version of Mainly by Moonlight, because I had finally gotten by post I Buried a Witch. It was 3 o'clock and it was obviously not a good idea to start the new book. But I thought that I might just read some pages, to see how it would start.

Then I went on reading, and I realised that I couldn't bear not to know what would happen, and I started jumping forward. Which I admit is a stupid thing to do, but I did it. Anyway I switched off the light at 5 o'clock in the morning... Now I'm going to read properly.

Alison | 4756 comments Jordan wrote: "Has anyone read any really good transgender or bisexual romance that came out in 2019?"

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston is super amazing! Bi Mexican-American MC. Super amazing!

There's also Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell, but it's a book two that doesn't stand alone and, if I remember correctly, Simon Snow doesn't ever actually identify on-page as bi in book one or book two. I'm not sure if that counts for what you're looking for or not.

Mason Deaver's I Wish You All the Best has a non-binary bi MC. It's a good book, but it's kind of depressing.

There's also How Not to Ask a Boy to Prom by SJ Goslee, with a bi Jewish MC. Super cute, lighthearted YA fluff.

***

The only super awesome trans romance novel I've read from 2019 is Time Turns by C.B. Lewis, but that's book four in a series and does not stand alone.

Also, KJ Charles' The Rat-Catcher's Daughter is an amazing ace romance with a trans MC, but it's more of a long short story, though it does stand alone.

And that's all I've got. Hope it helps.

KC | 4897 comments KJ Charles' Proper English and loving every word. And occasionally it's quite funny too.

Also reading Michael Ryan Webb's How We Love. Heartfelt, and surprisingly not as sad as i thought it might be; it starts with the MCs at a low point in their lives, and seems to get better from there, with ups and downs. Love the writing. The author only has one other book, which was also excellent - We All Die Trying To Get It Right - but have tissues at the ready.

Philipp | 48 comments I just finished The Wolf at the Door and would recommend it to anyone who is even slightly interested in shifter-fantasy. It is set in a contemporary world, a few years before the book is set the werewolf community "came out" to governments, but not the public at large. Cooper, the MC, was an FBI agent until he got attacked by a werewolf and was then recruited by the BSI, the FBI-offshot for wolf crime. It deals heavily with discrimination and Cooper himself is not free of prejudice. We see him slowly learn that his colleagues attitudes are wrong. This growth is well written and really satisfying to witness. In addition, it features a thrilling mystery and a slowly growing romance.
