Ooh, pressure's on! I hope you like it. Hopefully it continues being awesome, but I suspect it will. So far the hype is legit. And, I'm excited it's a "#1", so it looks like there will be more.

Anne | 6816 comments I just finished Gyrfalcon, the first in the Finding shield series by Anna Butler. It was very good, I just downloaded no 2. She recently published the fifth and last book in the series, so there is no waiting for the next book involved. If the rest is as good as the first, I foresee a lot of enjoyable reading in my near future.

Glad you enjoyed it, Anne! I absolutely love that series. It's one of my most favourites. I read the final book a few weeks ago and I'm so sad it's all over. Such wonderful characters.

The author has made the first book perma-free, so if a queer space opera epic with a gorgeous background romance and evil aliens sound like fun, do check it out. It's intense and exciting and a completely immersive reading experience.

I finished it last night and enjoyed it so much. It's full of great surprises and lots of excitement. Sounds like Book Two is slated for mid-2019. Looking forward to it! :)

My plans to sample read every author going to GRL have stalled. I can't seem to stay awake at night for more than ten minutes. I'm not sure if it's the heat or I'm just worn out by the time I finally get to bed.

Instead I've switched to watching a few minutes of Murder She Wrote, and it's no better. I can't seem to get past the first fifteen minutes.

Definitely one of the best books I've read this year. Solid plot, well written. I hope she'll turn it into series.

This is how I feel at night these days. For me though, it might be because I've taken to drinking hot peppermint tea before bed. I think that makes me sleepy after 9pm. I used to be able to read for at least half an hour before I'd turn off the light. Now, I'm lucky if I can keep my eyes open for 10 or 15 minutes!

message 14671: by KC (new)

KC | 4897 comments Just finished the fourth Hazard and Somerset mystery, Guilt by Association, and it was awesome! But I think I'll likely stop here with this series. The mysteries are great, and the tension between the MC fantastic, but I realized they also make me anxious... Plus, I really really liked how this one ended.

But, what this particular book did, is make me miss Adrien and Jake so much, especially the first two books in the series. So now I'm all excited about a reread. :-)

WMD | 251 comments I reccommend The Ghost in the Penthouse: A Romance Interesting characters...no onscreen sex...ghosts or madness? With mm romance. She wrote a prequel short story to this, with a crossover from her other books, but it isn't necessary for enjoying this one, I think.

In my effort to prepare for GRL I started a Lucy Lennox story. Lennox is a new writer, and it shows both in the lack of editing (and I mean there's some gross oversights here like, um, the wrong pronouns) and of course in anything remotely resembling originality. This was either a lazy reworking of a rejected M/F ms or a paint-by-numbers effort. Or both.

Of course that's just my humble opinion. She's certainly popular with a certain segment of KU readers.

message 14682: by Ame (new)

Ame | 1744 comments True. But in some ways she reminds me of Mary Calmes, in that sometimes I can't help but to like some of the stories despite knowing I really shouldn't. ;-D

Yes! Thanks for the recommendations, KC, WMD, and Ame. I loved that Rain’s abilities were doubted, then sort of (almost) accepted by his boss, and how Rain’s self-doubt and Daniel’s uneasy acceptance were described. This was one of the most original interpretations of this kind of story that I’ve read.

SamSpayedPI | 596 comments Wow. The Tin Box is really heartbreaking.

And if Lisa Henry trots out another kid-sister-in-peril, I'm going to start screaming and I can't promise I'll be able to stop.

(I'm not new, BTW, I just embellished my name. There were too many people named "Sam" in another of my groups and it was getting confusing).

WMD | 251 comments Lucy Lennox's sets up some interesting MCs, does the meet cute.....and despite having this framework so little happens....the last one I read by her kept having false events (have interesting jobs but we don't see them working, almost attacked, almost wandered into a bad neighborhood, almost reconciled with parents but decided that the parents were too superficial...after an hour, where the reader doesnt even get to see the parents). Read it thru just to see if anything would happen, and that was it for me. ..and the characters declared their love, the end.
Borrowing Blue and Taming Teddy had their moments, but I will not venture in Lucy land again (and I do find it bemusing how high the ratings are...a lot if people really love her stuff!).

The college town where these stories are placed is judgmental, criminal, bigoted and
I think none of the characters are completely clean...no one has clear uncompromised motives...
..and the MCs history has some bitter unrequited issues that, as much as we want them to get together, I can't really think how it will work.
All of that to say: I can understand the tension you are feeling!
I do recommend his other work....

I thought the flawed-but-lovable characters was very well done, and they make a good pair in lots of ways, especially since they seem to have an intuitive understanding of one another; so for me the tension/anxiety is coming more from the fact that they're both too stubborn to communicate properly while overthinking everything between them, and in book 4 I felt that was taking over my enjoyment of the mystery...

message 14697: by KC (new)

KC | 4897 comments This weekend I went back to reading Colin Cotterill's Siri Paiboun mysteries (mainstream) - the first one is The Coroner's Lunch. It's been years since I read the last one, and I forgot how good they are.
The stories happen in Laos in the '70s-'80s, the MC is the one medical examiner Laos has at that time, and he's in his late sixties. Great atmosphere - one can really get a feel for the place, people, customs, politics - plus I enjoy his sense of humor. In a way they remind me a bit of Alexander McCall Smith's Mma Ramotswe books - the "human" aspect, the sense of place - though they're completely different.

Yes, me too — thank you, Alison! I read it along with audio. I very much liked the narrator's voice, but felt that his differentiation between character voices wasn't as strong as I prefer... until about mid-point and then I was completely caught up in voice and story. Five points for Gryffindor! Uh, for the author, narrator, and story!
