The first book was excellent, I think that it will be 5 stars. IMO it was violent, yes, but not more than some other stuff I have read.

That trilogy is on my list of fantasy to check out someday. I'm ok with dark and brutal world. I read his science fiction before. He's gritty.

Antonella | 11565 comments I've just heard an enthusiastic review of Human Acts and I bought it. It has some fantastical elements although the inspiration is from a real event, the Gwangju Uprising in South Corea.

Han Kang won the Man Booker International Prize in 2016 with The Vegetarian.

NB: Now and then I do read something that it is not m/m ;-).

KC | 4897 comments Read a few really good books lately, all of which made me cry at some point and left me pondering.
- Bart Yates' The Brothers Bishop - excellent, though it deals with some heavy issues.
- Michael Ryan Webb's We All Die Trying To Get It Right - also excellent, but have tissues ready.
- Liz Jacobs' Christmas at the Wellands. Very good, short novella.
- Gregory Ashe's Paternity Case (book 3). I love these so much in a sort of tense way. The best UST since Adrien&Jake. :-) Everything is just so good and intense, both the relationships and the mysteries.

And I discovered a light (mainstream) mystery series: Alison Golden's Inspector David Graham.

And I'm in the middle of re-reading one of my favourite things from last year --Courtney Milan's stunning and funny queer historical romance The Pursuit Of... (which has just been re-released).

And I just finished Anna Butler's Day of Wrath, the spectacular conclusion to her spectacular Taking Shield queer military sci-fi space opera epic. It was amazing.

This sounds great. I've been on the waitlist at my library for a while.

message 14618: by WMD (new)

WMD | 251 comments Also can recommend Criminal Intentions -Season One Episode One by Cole McCade. Grisly murders of gay college kids, new police partnership tackling a serial killer. Interesting MCs, slowly learning about them as they learn about each other. Its a full length book.

message 14619: by Susinok (new)

Susinok | 5205 comments I started Grumpy Fake Boyfriend by Jackie Lau. It sounded fun. M/F romance for a change. It starts promising enough. I like our grumpy hero already.

I am in an m/m rut these days. Nothing sounds good (Until Kit and JX comes out.

But then when I listened to Prince Joe by Suzanne Brockmann, it was a crashing disappointment. I remember it being better than it was. Part of the problem was the narrator was rather slow, and the book was also slow, so it was agony to get through. Also big misunderstanding and two MCs that didn't talk to each other. It was very much an earlier work of hers that didn't hold up well for me.

Now I am listening to JCP's Imperfect Match audiobook, but I'm not in the mood for science fiction. I'm a mess! LOL.

SamSpayedPI | 596 comments In the "What's the Name of that Book?" discussion, someone is looking for fantasy or action gay romance novels. The problem (for me, anyway) is that they specify YA.

I can think of dozens of authors and hundreds of titles that are fantasy or action gay romance but not YA, and nearly as many YA gay romance that are not fantasy or action, but I'm having trouble thinking of any that combine the two. Any help?

Unnatural is a YA gay vampire series. Oh, Magic's Pawn is the first in a series.
I have also recommended The Shattered Gates to teens. Or some of Ginn Hale’s other books are definitely teen centered, Lord of the White Hell, Book 1.

Hope this helps!

For those interested in asexual lesbian romance, I just finished The Cybernetic Tea Shop and really enjoyed it. It could have been even better if it had been a bit longer, but if you like ace romances, you can’t go wrong here. The romance and emotions were handled well, especially considering one of the characters was a robot.

I’m also excited because I get to review this for my blog at work!

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell is awesome!

Peter Darling by Austin Chant is a favourite.

Not Your Sidekick by CB Lee

Maggie Stiefvater's mega-popular Raven Cycle

VE Schwab's Shades of Magic series

The Rules and Regulations for Mediating Myths & Magic by FT lukens

Junior Hero Blues by JK Pendragon

I could go on. I love queer YA fantasy.

Marge (margec01) | 599 comments Those of you who have been around for a while may remember Mel Keegan, author of the science fiction Narc and Hellgate series. Mel seemed to have disappeared a few years ago, and I dug around the Internet enough to find out that the author was very ill.

A couple days ago Smashwords started emailing me about three or four books a day being released from Mel. While most were reissues of older books, there were NEW books here, too!

From the author's website: So, if anyone is growling to you that NARC is not finished, tell 'em they're wrong. Tell 'em you've read the final trilogy! Yes -- trilogy, under one cover, three for the price of one ... $9.99 for three books. Not to shabby, and my was of saying "So sorry for the delay ... and, against the odds, I am actually still alive here!

Thank you for the good news. I'm glad that he is in good health.

Many years ago I had an e-mail exchange with him, the occasion was one of the discussions ''women-shouldn't-write-m/m'', he found the idea ludicrous.

I own the first edition of Death's Head (Narc, #1), this one Death's Head (Narc, #1) by Mel Keegan , and I've never read it, also because I found out later that there was another newer and longer version of the book.

Okay Antonella, you got me wondering which versions of Mel's books I have. Taking them off of the bookshelf sent me to the Wayback Machine, thinking, "I ordered these from Australia, didn't I?" And Mel Keegan's autograph along with "Cheers" on the title page reminded me that, yes indeed I have a copy of Death's Head imported from Australia in 2005.

I purchased Death's Head along with two others, White Rose of Night and Strange Fortune. They all have covers not shown here on Goodreads, probably because there are so few of them around.

This was back in the days of hard copy fanzines and livejournal. Things have changed a lot. :-)

The shorter, edited version is actually superior to the second edition. There's a LOT of filler in the reedited version.
