LOL!
LOL!
I started reading Josh's essay in Murder in the Closet: Essays on Queer Clues in Crime Fiction Before Stonewall but I was forced to pause in the middle because of all the Christmas hassle going on. I'm looking forward to finishing it tonight! In any case, the essay is excellent — evocative and profound. AND it makes me want to reread Pretty Boy Dead so bad! Or... in fact I'd love to read the very first version, Known Homosexual, which I don't own yet.
Aaaanyway, Pretty Boy Dead was my very first Hansen book after reading his Dave Brandstetter series and even though I didn't know what to expect I fell hopelessly in love with it. So, I can wholeheartedly recommend both the book and Josh's essay!

I finished reading the essay! Many spot-on thoughts there. It left me pondering especially over Billy's role/character in the book. Very interesting!
Now I'm looking forward to reading rest of the Murder in the Closet: Essays on Queer Clues in Crime Fiction Before Stonewall. :-)

I bought the ebook and it was around 12 USD. I think it's pretty usual for essay collections like this to be prized around 40 USD — or even more.

I loved Anyta Sanday's Leo Loves Aries! I read the blurb after ordering and was wary of the possible GFY trope, but this story is done so well. Great supporting characters/family and some of the best banter I've read. Lots of smiling-snicker-worthy double entendre that goes right past slow-on-the uptake Theo. Very, very slow burn. : )

Now I want to read it! :-)

--Lover's Knot by Donald Hardy. This is a lovely, gothic-ey queer historical mystery romance set in 1906/1892 Cornwall. It's gorgeous and beautifully atmospheric and I absolutely loved it.
--Turnbull House and Fool's Gold by Jess Faraday. These are books two and three of the spectacularly good Ira Adler historical mystery series. Ira Adler is an absolutely fantastic character and he's so entertaining. This series is delightful.

Am I really late for the hugfest? Any chance it's still going? :)

Never too late ;-)!
{{{Lots of hugs}}}, dear Alison!

Yes, it is. I got it on paper after someone recommended here.

Thanks for mentioning the series, Alison! They seem to get good marks from everyone. I put them on my.

I think the hugfest is an ongoing thing.
Sending lots of huuuuuggggsss, dear Alison! :-)

Can't answer that yet, there's still one book to come... ;-)
Looking at the list of books I read in 2016 (as it is atm) the two m/m at the top are The Mermaid Murders and Looking for Group. There are more, re-reads and non-mm but these two were released in 2016 and I gave them full points.
For me, The Mermaid Murders could become a classic Lanyon. Love the guys, the mystery is suitably mysterious and I could dive into the story head first. I love Looking for Group because it rekindled my love for the kind of games it describes. It was great fun for me to read it, I can appreciate though that for someone who never played it will be boring to no end. ;-)

I adde..."
It's always hugfest time. {{{Hugs}}}

Good question, Alison! I'm looking forward reading everyone's answers! :-)
Well, everything Josh wrote comes first in my favorites list (also) this year, but after all the lovely Josh Lanyon books...
I read many Raymond Chandler books this year and absolutely loved them. If I had to pick a favorite out of them it would be The Lady in the Lake.
I also found (with help of a dear friend) the team Ed Burbaker (writer) and Sean Phillips (illustrator), and their intriguing comic series The Fade Out. It's a wonderful noir series set in Hollywood's film industry at the end of its Golden Era. The story is dark and compelling, and I fell completely in love with Phillips' art! The series has three books: The Fade Out: Act One, The Fade Out: Act Two and The Fade Out: Act Three.
Out of the stand-alone m/m books (that are not Josh's!) Dal Maclean's Bitter Legacy was the highlight of my reading year.
Aaaaand out of Josh's books The Mermaid Murders was the one piercing my heart the most wonderful way. Although I suspect So This is Christmas will definitely do the same. :-D

Josephine Tey fans, I just found this new mystery series that is a tribute to her and her work. I didn't know if any of you have read it or not, but here's the first book: An Expert in Murder.

Ira Adler is awesome. He's such a cool character, and funny, too. I absolutely adore him. The mysteries and adventures are wonderfully entertaining and super engaging. Ira's narration is a hoot.

Unfortunately, I think it may have gone out of print recently, which is such a shame. It's worth getting a paper copy if you come across one.

Thanks for this, Alison. I can't believe I didn't have Fool's Gold already (it came out in 2015), because I loved the first two books in the Ira Adler series. I think I wasn't ready for the direction the story appeared to be taking, so I back-burnered it. Will definitely get on to it soon.

Fool's Gold does go in a different direction (America!), but it's the same old Ira. Though it's to be the last novel in the series, the author says she's working on several shorts concerning Ira's further adventures, which should be fun.

I ordered a copy too. It seems that it was available in ebook at some point, but now is only available in paperback via "third-party" sellers. (The new and "very good" copies have ridiculous prices on Amazon, but the "good" copies are reasonable.)

I bought the ebook years ago and it sat on my Kindle all this time. It was part of that four-book m/m historical set from Running Press in 2009, which included Alex Beecroft's False Colors (which is the only one still available in ebook).

Oooh, False Colors is one of my faves!

So I got some books for Christmas and spent a whole day immersed in Fates and Furies, extremely well written and it really hooked me in. The same can be said about An Exaltation of Larks, I really was sorry to say goodbye to the people in the story when it ended. After having been transported by these two I was at a loss, but fortunately then So This is Christmas arrived on my Kindle and saved me. Such a wonderful revisit by Adrien and Jake, and such wonderful writing. One sentence I had to read and saviour many times, Adrien is looking at Jake: " So beautiful. Hard and lean like something wild that had lived alone a long time." I'm not sure why, but this sentence speak to me of so many things, love and loneliness and beauty.

It's insanely expensive for a trade paperback. It makes me dread what will happen with Mr. & Mrs. Murder.
This is old school publishing. And it's a big part of what drives the publishing "revolution."

I wait for my print books, which should be here since last week, but their arrival is delayed. Sorry, sorry dear customer.
Several books from you ( The Curse of The Blue Scarab / What's Left of Kisses / Boy Meets Body for myself and The Mermaid Murders/ Winter Kill / Fair Game as gifts for friends ) I am a little bit disappointed that the parcel needs two weeks longer to find the way towards Neuss.

I'm excited for the LibGuide I'm creating specifically for the genre though. It's coming along nicely and I'll share it with you guys when it's done. Someone had mentioned linking in YA books, but I might just create a whole separate LibGuide for it. We'll see. :-)
