Finished reading this weekend:
- Heat Trap - good; would have liked the MCs to communicate better, but overall enjoyed it; i really like this kind of mystery and Merrow's sense of humor adds that extra wonderful dimension. I'm now reading the next one in the series: Blow Down.

- Fast Connection and the free short The Visit: Fast Connection Bonus Scene. I really loved Fast Connection. Even more than Strong Signal. Strong Signal has this very contained world, but i appreciated - in Fast Connection - having more complex characters and situations, both the MCs and some of the secondary characters. And then the Visit was sweet.

And started Deductions; interesting so far.

I have been having a hard time finishing anything lately. I have two books for a challenge that I'm about a third to a half into and I just don't want to pick up them again.

So I thought I'd try The Swede since several people here recommended it and I'm having the same problem. I want the current storyline to just start. All the flashbacks are too mysterious and I want to know how they intersect. Give me the story, not background!

Perhaps I am not in the right frame of mind for books at all.

Not reading this now, but just found out about this really interesting looking book: Eleventh Hour. It's an MM romance historical spy thriller set in 1920's London. Also, I love the cover, which doesn't scream MM romance.

I think For Real will likely be our BOM in September, but I might nominate this one for October.

Almost finished with Yesterday Will Make You Cry. It's such a sad book. Some parts are hard to read. This was Chester Himes' first book. They say it was first published in the 50's under another title which had had most of the content edited out. I can't imagine what would be left of the book, having done that! So much of it deals with male prison convicts falling for each other for lack of women and those who truly are "boy-girls".

I think this must be the best US female team ever. Really brilliant. Though I must say I do prefer bit more artistic floor exercises than USA do. Netherlands did beautiful floor routines.

I think though, that the content just got to me more than I thought it would. It's the way it's written for sure.

But, it's still a very good book. I've got about 30 pages left.

I read C.B. Lewis's Time Lost and it was fantastic. It's the second book in a really cool time travel romantic suspense series. The series is set in near-future Manchester and concerns the doings of the Temporal Research Institute (which secretly does time travel) and the clever folk who work there. It's a well written, smart series about smart people doing cool stuff and I loved the first two books. It's one of my favourite new series. The first book is Time Waits and it's awesome.

I'm reading The Raven King, the last in a four book series. It is probably what you call YA, but very strange, full of magic and mayhem and beautifully written. The core of the series is friendship, and versions of love.

I'm resting my poor tired brain cells and enjoying the heck out of this series. If your kids or grandkids are readers and fall into the MG (middle grade) group, they might enjoy this series as well. First book is free and a good introduction. Jemima Pett's just getting her writer's "legs" and while entertaining, a bit rocky. Subsequent books are awe inspiring. Tight, profound, well crafted, well edited (!), great character development, not scary, but touches on real life situations in a matter-of-fact way without hysteria. Overall story arc is incredible. BTW: the characters are guinea pigs and it took a while to get over myself and just enjoy the ride.

Read several awesome stories in the last few days. I discovered Elin Gregory and Amy Rae Durreson, and i'm now making my way through their backlists.

Elin Gregory: Sheep's Clothing and Eleventh Hour. Sheep's Clothing is very short, well-written, and fun. Eleventh Hour is awesome! Mystery-spy-adventure, very well written, and with charming MCs.

Amy Rae Durreson: The Ghost of Mistletoe Lock and Aunt Adeline's Bequest, which are sweet and romantic, and A Frost of Cares, which has some suspense and a bit of spookiness, in addition to a lovely love story, and it's really really good. They're all so very beautifully written, and gentle, and wonderful.

But that's a good thing. The book moved you and made you think. You really can't ask for more.

(Well, unless it's supposed to be a comedy. In which case, that would be a seriously peculiar title.)
