The misadventures of Darren Murchison: a gay, English, self-employed handyman – no job too small – who moves to Welsh sheep country in search of a quiet life. Not a good move for the world’s most reluctant werewolf!
Fun! I adore it when authors take traditional tried-and-true conventions and turn them on their ears. I don't think I've ever read a shifter story quite like this one! What a treat!!
It was an inventive, sweet, and nicely homely story but the short length forced the relationship to progress insta quick. I liked the writing style and the imagination infused into it, so now I'm keen to explore the other books by the author.
Teeny, tiny read from Elin, originally part of the Bollocks! anthology from Wayward Ink.
Darren moves from London to the middle of nowhere in Wales...he imagines the new locals are in for a surprise when they discover 'what' they've let into their community, but maybe they've got a surprise for him too!!
A very short fic, I loved the writing and feel of it but it's too short to rate higher. Appealing yet not quite enough of the characters for them to matter. Funny concept though.
For such a short read, this is a wonderful romance in terms of character development, setting, and world building.
We get the start of a romance but the bad guy took up room where more love story could have been but very good quick read. A delight with lots of fun surprises.
Sheep’s Clothing was originally published in 2011, but did not show up on my radar until it was re-released this month by Manifold Press. When I saw it pop up, I just couldn’t resist it. I haven’t met many little British comedies that I haven’t at least fallen a tiny bit in love with, and this one sounded fabulously absurd. There was no way there would not be some laughs involved in a short story about a reluctant werewolf plumber! There was the worry, of course, that at just thirty-eight pages the story would never get off the ground, but it was surprisingly well fleshed-out, and a ton of fun.
The blurb is short for a reason. Again, at only thirty-eight pages you don’t want to give too much of the story away. But, the premise really is pretty hysterical. Darren, an English plumber and electrician, has recently relocated to Wales after losing his gran, deciding a change of locale would be nice since there was no longer anything really keeping him in England. The kicker is that Darren is a werewolf and the Welsh countryside, including the neighboring farms, is full of sheep. It certainly seems like a recipe for disaster—but Darren isn’t like other werewolves.
It also turns out that the locals aren’t just your average folks either. On Darren’s first full moon in his new home, he has a run-in with Gethin, local hunky merchant, and…wait for it…weresheep. Gethin fills Darren in on how things work around there, and suggests that perhaps Darren should try shutting himself away for the night during full moons, which is the only time he has trouble controlling the wolf. The two strike up an easy friendship, and more. I loved their banter and their chemistry but, of course, nothing can ever go completely smoothly, and shenanigans ensue.
I found myself immediately taken in by the cheeky humor of the story and the characters, and I thoroughly enjoyed author Elin Gregory’s easy comedic style and dialogue. The end maybe got a little extra silly, which probably shouldn’t have come as a shock, given the subject matter, but all in all, I loved the originality of this fun little read. Definitely check this one out if you’re in the mood for something different that will make you chuckle!
Novelette or longish short story. You decide. What happens when a reluctant werewolf escapes to the Welsh countryside and finds himself surrounded by sheep? What if some of the sheep are also shifters, and a particularly attractive one appears to be gay as our wolf himself. Not as hilarious as it might be, but certainly amusing.
Sheeps' Clothing is a very original story that put a smile on my face from start to finish. Lovely characterisation and plenty of humour make this an entertaining read.
Disclaimer - I was involved in the editing of this story.
Love this short, as i have all of Elin Gregory's work. Lovely writing, wonderful characters, surprises and a nice dash of humor to go along with the heavy breathing. More please. :D
3.5 stars. Cute and fun and short. A different take on shifters. I don't usually seek out shifter books, but it's by Elin Gregory, so I couldn't miss it. It was really lovely.
4-1/2 Stars Don't know how this short story missed my radar last year and frankly I stumbled on it by accident this year. Well, whenever it grabs your eye I highly recommend reading this short. Would I love to read further adventures for Darren the handyman werewolf? Definitely, despite only 30+ pages, the world building and character development is incredible. There's really not a lot I can say that won't give anything away but let me tell you Sheep's Clothing is fun, sweet, sexy, with a couple of surprises thrown in to make this short intriguing and an all-around gem. If you enjoy Elin Gregory's work than this is not to be missed and if you have yet to experience any of her stories, Sheep's Clothing is an ideal introduction to her backlist. I haven't read all her work but trust me, what I have read is brilliant storytelling.
Cute enough story, but a little too short for me to really enjoy. I want space for the relationship to breathe, and here it felt like the story covered too much ground from first meeting to relationship with some plot events & annoying exes in there as well. Some really clever ideas around the were-creatures, though, and the setting was lovely.
An adorable little story that kept me smiling! It's short and I'd have loved more, but that's the way of short stories. Gethin is gorgeous. Perfect for when you need a quick cosy and quirky read to brighten up a dull moment.
Not high literature, nor meant to be, but cleverly written and with some amusing moments. This was a reread. I couldn't remember exactly the source I'd read it from before, but this time I got the story from Manifold Press. I remembered the better part of what had happened.
I love a good story of nice guy gets rid of shitty guy and finds nicer guy. Darren is just out of a bad relationship with Martin, alias uber alpha male. He moves way away to Wales and meets Gethin. One or two surprises occur. It’s great.
