What Are you Reading?

I love her books. The Magpie Lord would be one of my Desert Island books.

One of the things i love about her books is how you can be completely immersed in one character's point of view, completely on that character's side, as it were, and then you have a different point of view that is just as compelling, and it's done so seamlessly. So very awesome. :-)

Also started Richard Rider's Captured Shadows. Intriguing.
And read Cat Blaine's Eric and Sloot which was so cute and fun; thank you, Johanna, for the rec :-)

Still working my way through the Charlie Chan Carries On.
When I'm sick, I can't read. I don't know why because it seems like it should be the perfect opportunity, but I usually resort to TV and movies. So I have basically read almost nothing. Magazines...that's about it.

I did browse some of my Scottish cookbooks. In particular, the gorgeous Lady MacDonald's Scotland.
Er...the book is gorgeous. Lady MacDonald is so-so. ;-D

Oh, I liked this one a lot. Looking forward to hear what you think!
Have you seen Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven (1884) with cover and 26 illustrations by Gustave Doré. Isn't it beautiful?

Both the University of Adelaide and the Library of Congress have digital editions of the complete Doré edition of The Raven. Here're the links. I love those illustrations so much!

So far (about a third into the story), I love it. The writing is beautiful and intense emotionally, and there's a sense of trepidation (I peeked ahead a bit; just had to). So vivid too. He's a very talented writer.

I'm getting ready to order a copy of that for my library. Gustave's illustrations are gorgeous.

This sounds interesting, thank you for the rec.
I'm reading YA at the moment because I was a bit tired of... sex ;-).
I mean meaningless, repetitive sex on page.
I finished The Star Host (I still have to write a review, but it is 4 stars) and I've started The Year of Ice.

And it costs only $2.24 at

I'm rereading Mongrel which was our BOM, I think, many many moons ago now, in preparation for finally finishing the trilogy!

It is possible to pre-order the trilogy as a bundle for only $9.99 instead of $17.97:

Thanks! I actually bought all three books years ago and just never got around to finishing them.
Having just finished Mongrel this morning, I'm going to start 1984 next. My Dad just finished rereading this one, and I've not read it yet. Lol, I started a "parent challenge" to include all the books I gave my parents for Christmas that I also wanted to read. So many books! So many challenges! Plus, my Dads three books are on every summer reading list around here, so finding copies at the library is going to be fun starting in June. :-) Best get reading!

Interesting that you liked the sequel so much. It gets so little attention compared to The Front Runner.

Yes, I gave my mom the first five books in the Chet and Bernie mystery series by Spencer Quinn about two years ago. I've read the first three, but not the rest, and since I really enjoyed them, I realized I've got more catching up to do aside from last Christmas's books! (This, I've found, is a great way to get my parents reading more, and reading books just for fun. Plus, then we can talk about them.) hence the Parent Challenge.
Also, for all our mystery hounds here, if you like reading about Private Investigators... From the point of view of his dog, and you enjoy good humor, you've got to check out Chet and Bernie! Well worth the read.

I've started reading two extremely enjoyable books this weekend: The Lady in the Lake by Raymond Chandler and The Art of Dying by Diana Killian. Both books are so gripping that it's difficult to put them down.
What I REALLY should be reading are my students' art portfolios. But I'm postponing those... successfully. :-)

I really enjoyed the Art of Dying. It is the only DK book I have read so far and it was great. I am looking forward to reading others.

Oh yes — from the very first page and that crowded bus drive I was hooked. A bus that is spewing fumes like an asthmatic dragon! And those wildly bobbing plastic oranges and cherries on that floppy sun hat that blocks Hilary's view! There were something very John Steinbeck-ish in that hot, bouncy, suntan oil smelling bus drive. Gotta love it. :-)
It's so funny that some authors just manage to do it every time: grip your attention 100% from the very first page of the book. I find it amazing.

I bought Sinner's Gin audio and wasn't even finished with it when I purchased the rest of the series. SO GOOD! Rhys Ford is writing two more books for the series. Yay.

Josh, will THE ART OF DYING by Diana Killian be available in audio and digital format this year?

rated and reviewed today. 4-1/2 stars.

Sweet!
Mark your calendars: Monday, April 25 Rhys Ford's Sinners #5 Absinthe of Malice, Book Five in the Sinners series cover reveal!

Heavens no. :-D
Heavens no. :-D

I have just started listening to book two in the series. Such a great narrator.

Yes there is so much sex but mostly these stories get to me because they are well written and the character are a mess who still manage to get their lives together in a realistic way.
I received an email from a reader asking if I had a list of all the mystery and noir books referred to in the Adrien English series.
And I don't.
But I thought you guys might recollect some of the authors and titles I mentioned in the course of the series.
The Leslie Ford books, China House, Chandler...those all come immediately to mind.
Others?
And I don't.

I'd offer to re-read the series (again) so as to jot them all down if I thought I could stop reading long enough to take notes...

Actually, I've been wondering at that very same thing! I know Michael Nava and Joseph Hansen got mentioned. Maybe I'll attempt a list myself next time I reread them. I was just thinking I'd like to relisten to them again from start to finish. I know. I know. I just did. Can't help myself! But I DO need to finish listening to One Door Away From Heaven and Nightingale first. :-)

Right! Yes. Good God. How could I forget Hansen! Or Nava really.

I like that kind of shifter story :-)
And Matthew Shaw does a fine job. I think, the second one is even better than the first one. Very nice for a journey.
I am now going to hear A Case of Chrismas, l liked that story so much, so I am happy to listening to it!

Me too - like that kind of shifter story. And i really like the characters. And everything about these books. Very sweet and heartwarming.
Now to audible for A Case of Christmas, yay! :-)
I've started a google doc spreadsheet for this list of books. I wish I'd thought of this sooner. I wanted a large project for my vacation time, which is now about over. Well, we'll see how this goes when I'm hopped up on drugs tomorrow after oral surgery! :-)
I like doing this kind of fun project.

No fourth... But she said on FB that she started working on a new trilogy, which it seems will also be historical. Can't wait. I really love these.
