One of the things i love about her books is how you can be completely immersed in one character's point of view, completely on that character's side, as it were, and then you have a different point of view that is just as compelling, and it's done so seamlessly. So very awesome. :-)

KC | 4897 comments Reading Leta Blake's Smoky Mountain Dreams. It's a quiet book, and i'm enjoying it, slowly, taking a break every few chapters.

Also started Richard Rider's Captured Shadows. Intriguing.

And read Cat Blaine's Eric and Sloot which was so cute and fun; thank you, Johanna, for the rec :-)

Still working my way through the Charlie Chan Carries On.

When I'm sick, I can't read. I don't know why because it seems like it should be the perfect opportunity, but I usually resort to TV and movies. So I have basically read almost nothing. Magazines...that's about it.

Have you seen Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven (1884) with cover and 26 illustrations by Gustave Doré. Isn't it beautiful?

description

Both the University of Adelaide and the Library of Congress have digital editions of the complete Doré edition of The Raven. Here're the links. I love those illustrations so much!

So far (about a third into the story), I love it. The writing is beautiful and intense emotionally, and there's a sense of trepidation (I peeked ahead a bit; just had to). So vivid too. He's a very talented writer.

This sounds interesting, thank you for the rec.

I'm reading YA at the moment because I was a bit tired of... sex ;-).
I mean meaningless, repetitive sex on page.

I finished The Star Host (I still have to write a review, but it is 4 stars) and I've started The Year of Ice.

Thanks! I actually bought all three books years ago and just never got around to finishing them.

Having just finished Mongrel this morning, I'm going to start 1984 next. My Dad just finished rereading this one, and I've not read it yet. Lol, I started a "parent challenge" to include all the books I gave my parents for Christmas that I also wanted to read. So many books! So many challenges! Plus, my Dads three books are on every summer reading list around here, so finding copies at the library is going to be fun starting in June. :-) Best get reading!

Yes, I gave my mom the first five books in the Chet and Bernie mystery series by Spencer Quinn about two years ago. I've read the first three, but not the rest, and since I really enjoyed them, I realized I've got more catching up to do aside from last Christmas's books! (This, I've found, is a great way to get my parents reading more, and reading books just for fun. Plus, then we can talk about them.) hence the Parent Challenge.

Also, for all our mystery hounds here, if you like reading about Private Investigators... From the point of view of his dog, and you enjoy good humor, you've got to check out Chet and Bernie! Well worth the read.

KC | 4897 comments Read two stories by Lyn Gala (new to me): The Spy and His Boy and Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts. I really liked both. I liked the minimalism in the first one; when done right it makes for a powerful story. And I really enjoyed the second one, very well-written, imaginative. There are two more in that series, but I think i'll skip them. I'm trying to find something else awesome by her. I tried Urban Shaman, but i couldn't get into it...

I've started reading two extremely enjoyable books this weekend: The Lady in the Lake by Raymond Chandler and The Art of Dying by Diana Killian. Both books are so gripping that it's difficult to put them down.

What I REALLY should be reading are my students' art portfolios. But I'm postponing those... successfully. :-)

Oh yes — from the very first page and that crowded bus drive I was hooked. A bus that is spewing fumes like an asthmatic dragon! And those wildly bobbing plastic oranges and cherries on that floppy sun hat that blocks Hilary's view! There were something very John Steinbeck-ish in that hot, bouncy, suntan oil smelling bus drive. Gotta love it. :-)

It's so funny that some authors just manage to do it every time: grip your attention 100% from the very first page of the book. I find it amazing.
