What Are you Reading?

Can't wait! I still have one Colton I haven't read yet - Todd, and I loved Strange Marriage, The Outward Side, and Pretty Boy Dead. I'm really looking forward to your thoughts on Colton. Where will the essay appear? (and sorry if you've already mentioned this)
I want to thank KC for recommending S.C. Wynne's Home to Danger. I started reading it last night and even in the middle of all the Christmas preparations I feel reluctant to put the book down. In fact, I've been sneaking to read a few pages every once in a while today: Fetching the Christmas tree, Home to Danger, ironing the cloth under the tree, Home to Danger, wrapping some gifts, Home to Danger, walking the dog, Home to Danger, hanging up the rest of the Christmas lights, Home to Danger, making grocery lists for the final visits to the store, Home to Danger... I'm sure you get the picture. :-)
Very gripping , this one! Excellent writing, too. I'm enjoying it hugely.

So happy to hear that! :-)

I'm not sure when the essay will be out. Curt Evans is putting together a book for McFarland Press -- I believe there are 26 essays from 26 contributors regarding gay characters and themes in traditional mystery.

:-) This makes me happy. I think SC is so talented. Of course, I'm biased.
But then, aren't we all? :-D

So I began reading Offord's
and she is wonderful. We had a little concert last night and when I got home I thought I'd read for a bit to unwind. Two o'clock in the morning, I couldn't keep my eyes focused. Really enjoying this discovery -- even though I accidentally began with book 2 in the series.

Todd is pretty damned depressing. That and Gard are probably my least two favorite of the Colton books.
But the writing is always exquisite.

This sounds really good. I recently ordered a copy of The Gay Detective Novel: Lesbian and Gay Main Characters and Themes in Mystery Fiction for my birthday treat for myself. The essays sound great too, something to look forward to.
I love reading murder mysteries with gay characters and themes but I also like to reflect on what I am reading as a genre or aspects of a genre.

I try to avoid reading the ending, but sometimes the suspense is too hard, so I sneak a look. I can relax more and enjoy the story better sometimes, when I know the hero(ine) survives.

True. I can continue to read, but resigned to the end. Usually I then I shift my emotion to another carachter, who then hopefully remains unscathed.

now I find myself frantically checking other people's reviews and updates, so I can stock up my kindle for next week's trip to the in-laws for Christmas.
So far I got the first two books of "Vanished" by Carter Quinn (first one $0.99/£0.99) on Amazon. And my guilty "g-f-y" pleasure "Straight Guys" series just had book 5 out (Just a bit confusing).
I also got a secret Santa gift of "straight" bestseller thriller "The Girl on the Train". Hopefully they will help me through this festive season.

I have The Girl on the Train in audio. I'm hoping I'll get a chance to listen during the holidays when I plan to be mostly off line and working on The Mermaid Murders (not at the same time I'm listening to audio books though).
I've been listening to The Night Sister
. I'm surprised at how good it is -- the author is completely new to me.

I'm working my way through Sherlock Holmes this holiday season. Pretty soon I'll be able to say I've read the entire series of original books. Finally. lol.

Ooh, thank you KC and Johanna. When KC first mentioned how much she enjoyed the book, I added it to my wishlist at DSP. But with so many other books (and Christmas stories!) out there right now, I haven't bought it yet. I'll move it up on my "to buy" list.

I must have missed something. What is The Mermaid Murders?

First book planned for 2016. :-) First in the Art of Murder trilogy.
First book planned for 2016. :-) First in the Art of Murder trilogy.

Is it to early to ask about the central theme of the new trilogy, Josh?
L. B. Gregg's With This Bling, Romano & Albright #3. Can't believe I'd almost forgotten how funny Caesar is! Loved this book, love her writing.

This is next in my TBR pile....I almost want to reread the first two before I start. Haven't decided.

I think I still have three to go.

After Josh's A Case of Christmas (which I liked 5 stars worth!) I've found myself browsing internet, reading anything and everything about Catalina. :-)
I've also read two books from S.C. Wynne: Home to Danger and Hiding Things. I liked those hugely. Great character description and development (both main and secondary characters) and delicious humor. I enjoy watching the world through this author's eyes — everything seems to be written with heart and wit. Out of these two books Home to Danger was my favorite.
After re-listening L.B. Gregg's lovely holiday novella Simple Gifts, I'm now listening to Sutphin Boulevard by Santino Hassell, because someone recommended it here a while back. The book pretty much starts with a steamy hot sex scene and that's about as far as I've gotten. Although I'm planing to continue listening this later tonight while coloring.
I'm also in the middle of our December/January BOM Fool's Errand which has turned out to be a fast, unique read. I'm still unsure what exactly to think about it, but I find it refreshingly different — even absurd — and very enjoyable with all its intriguing weird details. The further I get the more I grin, in fact. :-)
Oh, and then there's L.B. Gregg's With This Bling that I'm planning to start maybe later tonight.
What about you guys? Have you discovered any gems?

I'm still reading Sherlock Holmes. I started the final book on my lunch break just now. :-) And soon as that's done, I'm back into Stevenson.
For Christmas I got Under the Jolly Roger: Being an Account of the Further Nautical Adventures of Jacky Faber and I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, so I'm looking forward to reading those quite a bit. :-)

I was eyeing this one curiously but must admit that I was scared off by the name... Are they describing the game accurately?

They are all packed up still, but I'll list the titles once I can dig them out again. I found them all at Half Price Books (best place for off the wall history books!)

Not sure if I was the only one recommending Sutpin Boulevard but keep on reading. Yes, there's quite a lot of sex but the beginning of the book is not a foreshadow to what's coming. I really, really like that story and just bought the next one in the series.

I'd say yes. An enjoyable series, longish stories, but some substance above and beyond just men in kilts. Playing for Keeps is free right now on Amazon (U.S. and elsewhere), so you can decide for yourself. : )

I believe they do but then, I admit not knowing too much about it. I used to watch both my kids play for years, but my brain has conveniently forgot most of what I learned at a point. The football isn't the main ingredientof the story though, although the game is very important to the protagonists, the books give a very interesting view on Scottish culture and social divisions along religion, class and family, so they are fascinating reads.

Thank you for the heads-up, Karen. I'm going to try this. And the nice book cover compensates the author pen name a bit. :-D
