Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Thank you! I was going crossed eyed re-reading it and then convincing myself it was one way, then next read the other... Can it be June yet?! May and I are not friends.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Now I don't mind spiders if they stay where they belong. I do NOT like them in my bedroom!

Good scare, Almeta. Did you see any good spiders when you were up north this weekend?

message 253: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Is this also where I mention I've been nursing a spider bite the last 3 weeks?

I'm not a fan of spiders, but you grow to tolerate them. Especially the ones that eat the poisonous spiders. Definitely prefer Daddy Long Legs in my house than Redbacks or White Tails. Not that they stop them completely.

message 254: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I don't mind spiders, unless they're in certain places, like near food or my bed. I have a couple of grandaddy longlegs that I have an agreement with :)

message 255: by [deleted user] (new)

Rules question - this round robin. Says three people. I'm reading that as at least 3 people, so if 5 people read it, you'd get 5x10 points. Would that be correct?

I feel your pain Rusalka! I got bitten on my big toe by a spider whilst in South Africa in 2007. It was the middle of the night and the offending arachnid somehow got into my bed! It hurt like hell for ages after! I was scared of spiders before this happened so you can imagine what I was like after! If they stay outside where they belong I am ok but if they come near me, I freak big time!

message 257: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments If I find a spider in the house, I take it outside after I catch it.

I have a spider species in my yard that I am alergic to. I have been bitten many times over the years while working in the garden, usually in the fall. I have never been able to identify it though.

message 258: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Yes, as long as there's 3 people, any others can choose to be part of the round robin, or use the book for another task. Keep in mind it's not extra points for round robin, it's the 10 points the person would get for any task.

Blimey Cherie, that sounds horrible! Do you have to take any medication if you get bitten? We are quite lucky here in the UK because there are very few spider species (if any) that bite people. Mind you, they probably wouldn't get close enough to me anyway! I like to keep distance between myself and them if I can help it. If they get in the house, they are caught and put back outside but not by me. By someone braver! Lol

Benedryll antihistimine seems most effective. If I ice the area, it keeps the swelling down but it still iches like mad. I have been lucky the last few years - no bites.

message 265: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments For all those who aren't too keen on spiders, just remember that they eat a serious amount of bugs and without them we would be literally overrun with invertebrates (and I mean overrun!) so they do actually do us a kindness (even if they do get a bit tetchy at times...)

Sorry the ecologist in me is taking over again! :-)

Janice (jamasc) | 59905 comments I used to subscribe to a quilting magazine put out by Mark Lipinski. He ran pictures of fabric with spiders on it. One woman wrote a letter to the editor and said that she turned the page and saw the spiders, threw the magazine across the room. She had such a terrible phobia to spiders that she was cancelling her subscription!

Not that is some serious phobia!

I'm a clinical hypnotherapist and get a lot of people coming to see me for phobias. I think they are really interesting and it's amazing what our brain can do!

I bet that is a really interesting job Sarah. You must hear about some strange phobias. I think the strangest phobia I have personally encountered was a girl I used to work with who had a fear of cheese. My biggest phobia is spiders but I also do not like clowns, puppets or ventriloquist dummies. I was terrified of Punch and Judy as a kid! Those old fashioned puppets really give me the creeps.

Yes it is really interesting. It's amazing what our brain can decide is a danger to us. Clowns and puppets etc is quite common Lisa - I don't like them much either to be honest - also people dressed up in costumes which is why I'd never go to Disneyland! I see a lot people with the more common phobias like spiders, heights, flying, claustrophobia, emetophobia (fear of being sick) and public speaking, but less of the more obscure.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I went to college (that's yrs 11 and 12 here) with me who was scared of fruit.

I never knew that Sarah. I feel this may have a heap of questions associated with this bit of information. I apologise in advance. I'm annoyingly curious, I have a Psych degree and hypnotherapy is something I have never got my head around. Mind you, I'm from Aus, so if you can't cure it with CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) we are at a bit of a loss :P

message 271: by Sam (new)

Sam (ecowitch) | 2354 comments I avoid places like Disneyland too Sarah but more because I really don't like crowds (or people generally if I'm really honest) so anywhere like that is my worse nightmare!! I just about manage to survive the busy rugby crowds when I go to matches! :-S

Whenever I see a spider, I think of my grandmother who protected spiders and taught her grandchildren the importance of spiders. She sang the praises of spiders and explained like you have Sam that they are so good for the environment. I should have called her Grandmother Charlotte! (For Charlotte's Web) but her name was Marie. LOL!

Sam, I am with you all the way on avoiding crowds! I avoid a crowd like the plague!

Feel free to ask away Rusalka. Our brain is great at learning new dangers which is a great evolutionary tool but sometimes it can learn something is dangerous when it actually isn't and our brain triggers the fight or flight response as if we're in danger - all rational thinking goes out the window! The NHS here in the UK heavily lean towards CBT but it has its flaws; hypnotherapy is becoming much more recognised now which is a good thing as it is very effective, especially at helping with anything anxiety or stress related.

And back to books now! Start of June tomorrow so only 8 days till we start the Toppler! I can't wait!!

I'm glad I'm not the only one singing the praises of spiders and avoiding crowds!!!

And you are best leaving it Debra, it'll only end up coming back (or worse not surviving the relocation) and at least its keeping the fruit flies population under control :-)

Thank you Connie. I have been making piles of books. One for the Toppler/ challenge and another for after the surgery when I will have extra time to read. The silver lining is that no one will complain when I completely ignore all responsibilities to keep my nose in a book! I wonder how long I can milk this?

I didn't think of that. Dealing with the trigger of the panic without the pesky panic responses getting in the way. Very clever.

I'm having book dilemmas. I need to get on with my alphabet because I am so incredibly behind, but they don't seem to fit properly. Would The Happiest Refugee: A Memoir fit for a long journey? I flicked through it last night, and the boat journey (fleeing Vietnam to Aus as a refugee by boat) seems to be only the first part of the book, and the rest is about him trying to fit into crazy Australia. He did alright seeing he's now a well known comedian.

All fruit or particular fruit?

message 288: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments All fruit. Made it hard to eat an apple for recess. He would get up and move to the complete other side of the room or area from you.

He was afraid of the fruit making him sticky and him being unable to get clean. But only from fruit. As with most phobias/compulsions, there is a little bit of logic there but then blown out to the extreme.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I'm going to read one road trip story and horror books. I've got a decent line-up! Nothing like scary camp-fire stories.

I remember fighting with my brother for seat space in the back seat of our car when our family went on vacation. There was an invisible line we weren't allowed to cross. Oh, and my dad smoked and I would complain every time he lit up... "Dad, crack your window." He would get so irritated with me. We inhaled a lot of second-hand smoke on those trips!
